I went without a microwave for a few weeks once when my old one caught on fire. Man, ten years ago. I don't remember life without it being too difficult -- more pots and pans to wash, I guess, and probably less likely to reheat leftovers.

If you do decide to get a new one, try for one without a digital clock built in. If the internet is to be believed, apparently powering the clock 24 hours a day uses more electricity per month than actually using the microwave regularly.

Get a toaster oven for making Hot Pockets. Heat up a last faster than in a regular oven. The year I spent in Florida was microwave free. Stovetop, toaster oven, coffee maker (for hot water and tea) and a hot-air popcorn popper is all I needed. I did live (hot food wise) on mostly frozen pizza's, hot pockets, and chicken kiev with rice.

So you used 3 appliances to replace the 1 microwave with the toaster oven, coffee maker and popcorn popper?

Lol! To be fair, most people are going to have a coffee machine anyway, so not really three. But yeah, there's no reason to own a popcorn machine and a toaster oven in lieu of a microwave. I suppose you could argue that the toaster oven has other uses, but I've just never found one to be worth buying. On the rare occasion I actually do need to toast something on a flat plane, I have an actual oven I can use.

For me, it's less about cost efficiency as space efficiency. The stovehood/microwave thingies are a great use of space (assuming you live in a home built in like the last 30 years or so, there's already a spot built for it). Huge counter top space saver. I also tend to avoid buying counter top appliances that only have one function (yeah, I'm looking at you rice cookers). On that one, it's not even really just about counter top space, but storage space as well.

I'm assuming the hot tap water is just to soften the ramen and get everything going prior to the cooking process that occurs in the microwave itself. But it's Joph's dish, so maybe he'll have a better explanation.

It's not the cooking - it's the contaminants

Yeah it's pretty low risk for adults, but still a risk easily avoided. Would definitely have kids avoid it anyway.

All water piping in my house is non metallic. I think the risk for me getting lead poisoning is so damn low.

You must not eat much rice. Electric rice cookers are one of the best inventions of the last 100 years.

I like rice cookers, but for bazmati it's so easy to make a good pilaf, and it's so tasty that I don't begrudge the 5 minutes of effort it takes me. I recently got an all in one rice cooker/ slow cooker/ pressure cooker thingy to save space, and so far it's been worth it.

I also finally gave in and ordered one of these, which I'm pretty excited about trying out. Should arrive end of this week.

I'm not sure I get it, but can it be used in other liquids. Like could I do candies? Sugar is such a bitch to get to proper temp.

Sugar would not work, it tops out at 210

I guess. Just seems like if you've got dangerous levels of lead in your pipes, maybe there's other corrective action you should be taking rather than just avoiding following Joph's ramen recipe?

My microwave's light just went out the other day, though it still works. Which is good, since it is our primary source of food around here. We do have another microwave, but it's still boxed up. It's also an over-the-range hood model that has nowhere to go, yet.

As for rice cookers, I really should get one but never will. Why? Because I'm a fucking moron, that's why.
