It doesn't need to be "FAILURE!". If it's not significantly greater than the projected theater take then the "Oh HO! Obviously this was all a scam to make EVERYONE watch it! They couldn't fool ME though!" schtick doesn't really hold up. I have no real stake in it though. Probably because I wasn't gloating about how I saw right through their money-making falsehoods Smiley: wink2 I suppose now we can argue how Sony actually though this was an amazing way to make tons of money but just mistakenly but sincerely thought that faking a hack and threats, canceling the movie, then announcing a very limited opening, then leaving it for people to rent online was the best way to profit off the picture.

Let's just look at the gross at the end of 2015, which is where that $50 mil projection is intended to forecast.

$50mil was a four week estimate. Box Office Mojo has it at $90 mil in November (before all this) based on the takes from "This is the End" and "Pineapple Express" -- $90m being in the middle. I assume that was for its entire run though.

It's adorable how you set up the "faked a hack" strawman when you think you're a losing an argument. I can see the goalposts know no limit on this, however, so much like bathrooms for little boys in dresses and Jesus, we'll just agree to disagree.

Feel free to take that as me conceding if you like.

I guess it depends on where you think the conspiracy begins.

I'm imagining Smash's image of the conniving Sony Execs and Marketing starts after the hacking and the threats when the major theater chains decide to not screen the movie. Then to drum up media about the future Digital release, Sony says "Fine, we won't let ANYONE show it cause uh, safety and all that". But I don't think it would have made much a difference if they had came out right after the threats and the chain theaters decisions and said they'd do a digital release anyway.

Could be. I could spend all day listening to Smash accuse me of moving goalposts and all that nonsense. But "There's pretty much zero chance this movie doesn't make more money than it would without the NK cyberattack angle" is almost certainly wrong. A traditional release and showing would have almost certainly made more money.

Edit: I hate that I wrote "almost certainly" twice but I suppose that in the face of an unprovable alternate timeline, I gotta hedge my bets.

Sure, champ. I guess we'll never know! We can be certain you wouldn't use hyperbole though. Never that :)

I'm not really going to monitor this thread, hey, send me a PM when you start argue the definitions of words as this movie continues to make money.

I've got a cousin who is about... 17 now. He's one of those DotA2 players.

His facebook feed is like.. Poldaran-GG x100. (At least, Poldaran here). A strange mix of Anti-religion, Anti-feminism (at least, the Anita kind, he seems to post a lot of pro stuff from the middle east pro-women type things), Pro-homosexuality, Pro-Science, mocking the anti-vaxxers constantly.

What exactly from this thread made you think of Poldaran?

Hasn't this movie been lost in the sea of mediocrity yet?

The only time I caught myself smiling was during the intense near-coitus scene where whatsherface says something along the lines of "You're so hairy! You're so hairy like a bear!". The delivery was perfect, as was Seth's facial expression.

Everything else was your average Seth Rogen comedy. Lots of frat boy jokes about penises, boobs, and **** penetration. And I can't believe they couldn't find an actor who looked even slightly like Kim Young 'un.

I'm almost certain that was an Austin Powers joke.
