I bet. However, your sincerity is in doubt and I haven't found discussing theology here to be especially worthwhile. So I'll take a pass. I only responded to Angrymnk on it because his answer wasn't theologically unsound, it was just silly even if you take the gospel in question as a piece of standard literature.

Gotcha, so you're interested if someone claims that Christianity endorses violence because Christ talks about a sword, it's important to make the distinction that it's a metaphorical sword. God murdering children, though, not worth talking about in terms of the immense violence of the Christian tradition.

I guess I'll just wait until the next time someone confuses the virgin birth and the immaculate conception, because those are important things worth posting about.

I think my first existential crisis was precipitated by Sunday school, actually. I never understood why the story of Job was supposed to be inspirational, for example. It just seemed brutal and pointless to me. Same with Abraham being ordered to sacrifice Isaac. Why would I want anything to do with a God that would do that to the people who DID worship him? Killing unbelievers, okay, at least I could understand that.

The happy endings. It's obviously a social control fable in both cases. "No matter what you experience, no matter how terrible things are, still remain obedient to God and everything will turn out ok. Incidentally, God only speaks to us, so you know.."

Absolutely. Just like applying rules for integrity. Arbitrary and solely your own :)

Yeah, not such a happy ending for all the dead wives, children and slaves. I guess Job got a salve or something for the raging boils, so that was nice.

Didn't he live to be 300 or something as well? That's pretty good compensation for a few dead wives.

I don't really follow. I'm not baiting you, I have no expectation you'll seriously respond about religion. I don't know how you cope with the internal contradiction of "I believe in science! Also, an invisible man in the sky who tells me what to do in a 5000 year old book!" but that's your own business. If, on the other hand, you're only going to defend a belief system when it's easy, that's a lack of integrity. Just objectively. You are clearly fine with that, which makes your application of integrity arbitrary. Again, just objectively.

It's not like we haven't seen the "Joph refuses to talk about difficult subjects" thing before. I can't imagine anyone thinks you are "baitable" regarding little baby Jesus in his golden diaper. I certainly don't.

"If religion weren't primarily all about peace, then you would have a point."

Not directed at me but this is false. Religion is primarily about controlling the masses. It's how you control people who have little to lose.

"Oh, you don't have anything we can use to control you? If you don't follow these rules that this dude in the sky told us to write your soul will burn for eternity."

Religion has NOTHING to do with peace.

Religion has NOTHING to do with peace.

I don't know about that. I think the primary point is it's just an ad hoc belief system that can be adapted to anything. It's only about authority and social control. Once people do what you say, what you tell them to do is arbitrary. It could be "help the starving people" as easily as "kill the infidels". It would be wrong to argue religion has never been put to "good" purposes. It has. It's just a method, though, not a cause, the same as when it's used to incite violence.

Mine was.

I wet my pants during Sunday School. It was an accident!

The Sunday school teacher (which was probably just one of the 'church moms') yelled at me and sent me off to the bathroom, but I didn't know where it was, so another kid had to go with me. All the kids teased me.

So, I disappeared.

The problem is that these religions are worshiped by humans, and humans are a-holes who will twist and turn expressions to fit their personal agenda. "Don't kill people" easily gets twisted into "Don't kill believers", and next thing you know, planes are crashing into buildings, and cartoonists are being executed left and right.

The human condition.

Or, in a slightly ironic if entirely predictable twist, the french police arrest a comedian for expressing his controversial views.

We spend one week screaming that freedom of speech includes the freedom to offend... We march on the street, we all hold hands and pens and placards, we get Netanyahu and Abbas to do a tango under the eiffel tower, we lecture those bad muslims on their thin skin... and then we arrest a comedian for making an offensive comment. ******* french people, I swear...

Post WW2 France is just depressing in terms of expressing opinion. In their defense, my old country is not that much better, we still have, enforced too, a law against hurting people's religious sensibilities.

For all the issues US has, at least I can everyone a ******.

I don't disagree with the general sentiment. You are probably wrong on the progression though. In normal tribal times, local holy book says not to kill local people ( everyone else is fair game ), while a relatively more 'advanced' version of the holy book might make the rule a bit more general to bring the religion to the mainstream ( after sufficient amount of people have been slaughtered and otherwise neutered during 'local cult' stage ).
