Interesting bit about the Ryan tweet. I don't follow the guy, so I have no clue what the context was, but it's interesting that his tweet was a direct quote from this article. My suspicion is that he (or, more likely his staff), just quoted every paragraph in the article that listed a person and their savings. Of course, if you ignore the two bracketing examples of 200 dollar a month savings and just look at the $1.50 a week one in the middle, it might look a bit weird.

Very easy to cherry pick one tweet in a set and make it look like something it's not. I'd be shocked if out of the list of examples in that article, he actually chose to include just the one that was smallest, so I'm going with "series of tweets quoting savings from the article, and folks decided to jump on one of them" angle. But hey. Let's not look at the whole picture here when we can zero in on the outliers.

This is all covered in the YouTube video I posted, how the only paragraph quoted was her statement, which she thought was odd, because of the two bracketing examples, leaving her to suspect that he didn't read the full article.

Yes. Every story I saw about that pointed out that it was linking to an AP article. Way to sleuth it out, though. So interesting!

Way to miss the point, gbjai.

The point that in the article, there were three examples given. Two in which people saved $200/month, and one in which a person saved $1.50 a week. So let's jump on the one case and ignore the other two?

The point is that this is cherry picking. And yeah, perhaps that whomever is feeding quotes from news articles into Ryan's tweets should be more aware of that potential for cherry picking in the future. Of course, had he tweeted just the other two cases and not included the woman who saved only $1.50/week, the accusation would have been about Ryan ignoring the smaller gain to make things look better than they really are.

There's always an easy/cheap way to make such attacks if you really want. That's why some of us do this shocking thing of researching the source of information (like I did with the article) rather than just blindly trusting what I'm told. The truth is usually bigger than that.

Which would be an odd thing to suspect. Let's see.... A proponent of the tax reform, seeking to find examples of how well it's working to improve people's lives and paychecks, finds an article with three quotes and deliberately picks the lowest one? How do you "not read" the article and come up with that? Again, a far more likely explanation is that he originally included all three examples, but when he was attacked on the one, he deleted the whole set (more likely his staff did both btw). Or maybe someone didn't see the "." in $1.50 and thought it was $150/week (which would make it the largest amount of the three). Or the original contained a link to the full article, and whomever put it there, just picked one example at random and didn't think about it beyond that.

Not being able to see the original, and not knowing what other content or context was surrounding it, I can't say. Again though, I think it's a silly thing to jump on. Perception versus reality. OMG! Ryan thinks $1.50/week is a huge gain? Um... No. I'm reasonably certain he doesn't. And said gain isn't representative of most people in any case. And is that worse than Pelosi calling $1-2k bonuses "crumbs"?

One of these is most likely an honest mistake, or just not thinking about optics, but while getting the actual policy right. The other is just plain out of touchness *and* getting the policy and position completely wrong. I'll take the reality of lower taxes over the perception of a tweet any day.

I got something like 33 dollars more per week in my paycheck due to the tax changes. That'll come out to 1,700 dollars, so, not a laughable amount.

That tax cuts didn't come out of thin air, we received increased deficits due to them. Yes, the box of donuts got 25% cheaper, but they cut the package down from 12 to 8. The GOP bought us a gift with our own credit charge and expects us to pay the accruing interest.

As much as conservatives like to lambaste "Well, why not make minimum wage $1 MILLION!, then everyone will be rich," that is also a problem here. Without considering utility changes, the distribution of tax cuts matters. If my income inflates while everyone else's inflates more, then I have lost purchasing power.

The funny thing is, the "cherry picking" was done by Ryan. His tweet was:
Quote:
A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week ... she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year
...with a link to the AP article. Pretty much everyone (including said secretary) is baffled by the fact that THAT'S the example they picked to go with from the article. I guess Ryan or his lackey just saw "school secretary" and figured "This will play well with those rubes!" and ran with it.

I like how he insists it's okay to draw conclusions from less than 140 characters yet throws a hissyfit if someone skips even one sentence in his dissertations on a dead video game forum.

That reminds me, I need to look at that paycheck change when they finally go through here and see how my withholdings shake out.

Thanks to Trump for agreeing to further subsidize my minions though.

Also because we've been talking about things that have nothing to do with global warming again, this animation is pretty cool:

THAT WAS THE ROUGHEST TEN HOURS IN AMERICAN HISTORY

In fact, as a sign of solidarity with the shutdown I didn't go to work all last night.

That'll be my excuse. They called/texted/emailed me at 7:30pm last night and I missed it until I checked my phone in the morning. So I'll just say I was participating in the temporary government shutdown (ignore the fact that I work in the private sector...).

At least it was something easy they fixed themselves. They were just in panic mode (as usual) cause it's important stuff. So rather than looking at it themselves they just say "OMG IT'S NOT RUNNING! CALL SOMEONE NOW!".

One of the congresscritters leading the way of the #Metoo movement, fighting against sexual harassment, Cristina Garcia of California, has found herself on the receiving end of the movement as a staffer has accused her of getting drunk during a softball game in 2014, grabbing his ass and making a run for his giblets. She says she has no recollection of that, instead of resigning like she insists other people do when they're accused of the same behavior.

I do love me some politics.

I'm admittedly nostalgic for the days when twitter drama stayed on twitter and the rest of us could just laugh at it then go on with our lives as normal. Between the President, these various social movements, the bots wars, and other **** its a wonder we still have a society some times.

That's an amusing irony though. Kind of like this one which seems to be making the rounds today too.

Quote:
A Utah lawmaker who voted for tougher penalties for prostitution has resigned amid allegations that he used taxpayer dough to pay for hotel rooms to hook up with an online escort, according to reports.
I love her surprise when she found out he was using his real phone, and that he had voted for tougher laws. Smiley: rolleyes
