Yesterday I learned there are lots of sewer scope videos on youtube. Apparently the company that did one for the house we're wanting to buy found it was easier to share the videos that way; rather than dealing with CDs or other download links. They just put the video up, send you a link to that in the e-mailed report, and you can look at the inside of your sewer pipe in all its glory on the world wide web any time you want.

So you know, if you're bored Saturday night or something, there's endless hours of entertainment just waiting for you.

I was told there was at least one with a mouse. Thus far I'm unwilling to sit through hundreds of hours of videos on the off-chance of verifying those claims though. Maybe once we get the place and I have free time again.

But it's Mexico...

I mean that'd probably work well for a Canada wall, but I'd assume Mexicans would just think of it as another normal day.

I might get to go to Germany near the beginning of October. Nothing like a possible beer filled trip funded by your employer.

My last employer funded journey was supposed to be to Japan, but that one got cancelled (I was disappointed). Luckily this one is less about "If" and more about "When".

Just FYI, Oktoberfest officially ends on October 3rd this year. But it's not like you have to be there for the festival to get good beer in Germany. The sw dev team for the vendor I work with is in Germany, so that's always a fun time to try to get work done (um... as in make sure it's done early in summer or wait until fall).

The trip is actually currently schedules for the last week of September. So I may be in Germany during their festivities.

I went to Italy a few years ago on business and it happened to be during Ferragosto. But instead of anything fun going on there, everyone had just left on vacation so all the cities were empty. The hosts of that trip said everyone went north to Austria and the Alps. They said many people took the whole month off (crazy...) but that recent years it's started becoming less popular to do so. Probably as these European countries realize shutting down for a month at a time doesn't work out well in a global economy. I always hate trying to do business with European companies during their huge shutdowns.

Happens in pretty much every Western European country during August. I used to do a lot of work internationally, but we were always Stateside in the summer since everybody on the other side of the pond goes to a beach for a month.

I spent 7 years there and was happy we had Base Housing, because then our water came from California Canal system. I spent 3 months living off base and my ex would fill up jugs of water on base and bring them home for me to use for drinking and cooking. When my 1 month old would let me have time to take a shower, I had to hold my nose and get in and out before the smell of sulfur made me sick.

As much as I loved the weather and mountains, I'm glad to be back east where I don't worry well water. We just have to worry about aging pipes that suddenly bust and leave sink holes in downtown Baltimore.

It's not really about messing up the bagels, as there's just not the same kind of culture here. You don't see bagel, pretzel, hotdog, etc cart vendors around here (like at all). So you can pretty much only get such things at either chain stores (which are pretty bleh), or "upscale" "trendy" specialty bakeries (ie: expensive). On the flip side, we have tacos, burritos, and tomales all over the place. I'm not sure if "guy selling home made tomales out of the back of a van in a mall parking lot" is quite the equivalent of a bagel cart, but there you have it.

How long has it been since you lived in the area? Not sure which part of California you were in, but I distinctly (very distinctly) recall there was a period of time in the early to mid 80s, where the water quality in San Diego was really really bad. Like hold your nose bad. Like you could smell the sulfur in the pipes when not even running them. You could smell it on your clothes after washing them. Yeah... bad.

Hasn't been like that for 30 years or so though. Not sure what they did, but they significantly improved things. I have no issues just drinking filtered fridge water.

I think the New York comment was about the water. I've seen it on a few Food Network shows, something in the water supposedly makes it better. I can only guess that the New York water is so polluted that the people growing up there just get so used to those added flavors and think something is wrong when they aren't there.

Yeah, bagels seem like a pretty standard baked good. But I have little opinion regarding bagels. Maybe the ones in Skokie are to die for but bagels aren't something I eat much of and if someone say New York bagels are the best bagels this side of Israel -- sure, why not.
