So like... John Boehner resigned or something.

Apparently he was under a lot of pressure from Tea Party types, particularly Ted Cruz, for being too cooperative with the president. Normally I'd be like "yaea! Nuts to that guy!" But now I'm all like "Oh. ****. Now someone worse will replace him."

This is the same UN that appointed Saudi Arabia to a special panel on human rights... the same week they beheaded and crucified a 21-year-old man for participating in a political protest. Smiley: oyvey

Crucifying seems out of character for the region.

It is, or was, more of a Roman thing. See how cultural exchange can enrich us all?

America's getting its own Black Whopper. Apparently the secret will be A1 in the bun, as opposed to squid ink and charcoal.

I'm sure someone will make the obvious "I'd rather have the ink and charcoal" joke but I'd probably go for the A1.

I'm far too immature to order something called "Black Whopper."

I bet you can't fit the whole thing in your mouth.

How is the A1 going to turn the bread black?

I'm writing a letter of complaint to the regents about how you didn't put a trigger warning on that article.

It has become a term of endearment to some of us, if that helps.

Quote:
• Less resilient and needy students have shaped the landscape for faculty in that they are expected to do more handholding, lower their academic standards, and not challenge students too much.

• There is a sense of helplessness among the faculty. Many faculty members expressed their frustration with the current situation. There were few ideas about what we could do as an institution to address the issue.

• Students are afraid to fail; they do not take risks; they need to be certain about things. For many of them, failure is seen as catastrophic and unacceptable. External measures of success are more important than learning and autonomous development.

To be fair, students today really are facing much heavier overall strain than those of generations past-- mostly in the form of student loan debt, and the sure promise of a mediocre life being borderline homeless working for Walmart or 7/11 til the end of their days if they don't succeed in becoming qualified for something even slightly better. But no, it also doesn't help that Tumblr is teaching young people to respond to any sort of criticism with "check your privilege."

Well, my answer to that would be, if you think your life is headed toward failure then don't incur the additional debt of college. Some very successful people have skipped college and gone straight to starting up their own businesses.

The point the writer is making is that helicopter parenting seems to have resulted in a generation of kids who have never had to solve their own problems. I'm not sure I agree; I know some pretty competent kids. But then, their parents didn't tend to smother them, as far as I could tell.

If that is the case, then I wonder, why is this an issue now? Helicopter parenting is certainly nothing new.

Without even going into the appropriation of foreign culture, the name itself is deeply #problematic.

Maybe, maybe not. This is a pretty interesting article, in which the writer draws some conclusions based on the fact that unstructured, unsupervised play has steadily fallen out of fashion over the last several decades. That correlates to an increase in anxiety and depression in kids, as evidenced by 130 years' worth of psychological testing conducted on samples of students.

The linked article wrote:
The increased psychopathology seems to have nothing to do with realistic dangers and uncertainties in the larger world. The changes do not correlate with economic cycles, wars, or any of the other kinds of world events that people often talk about as affecting children's mental states. Rates of anxiety and depression among children and adolescents were far lower during the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the turbulent 1960s and early ‘70s than they are today. The changes seem to have much more to do with the way young people view the world than with the way the world actually is.

Personally, I wonder how much of the increase in anxiety and depression he mentions is due to the amount of information available. I know it sounds silly; but at a time when we should feel empowered by the wealth of information all around us, I think we're overwhelmed.

You know what else has fallen out of fashion? Letting my little angels get murder raped by gypsy werewolves in panel vans. Which is exactly what happens when you let them walk down to the creek by themselves.
