Taking my first ever real vacation in April. Kind of narrowed it down to Jamaica but open to possibilities for sure. We chose Jamaica because it's not a budget vacation spot and cheaping out on the 1 vacation we will likely ever have is just a bad idea, I hear the food is good, and it looks good in pictures.

Two options I'm currently reviewing:

Riu Montego Bay

Or maybe:

Grand Bahia Principe

Never been out of the country before other than a very brief trip across the Canada US border 20 years ago. Never seen an ocean. Want to scuba dive, snorkel and generally have fun without children.

We have not had a single night without children in 7+ years. We do not know how to adult.

Suggestions? Stories? Reviews?

Edit: Stupid links and stuff

Yeah, don't try to adult. Be kids. Kids know how to have fun without worrying. Also don't ask questions about food. Just order things and dig in. In fact, try the gross sounding stuff. They're on the menu for a reason.

I've never had a real vacation, just days off. (Like today, first day off this year (since last May), as in May I lose my vacation days and have 23 of them to burn).

Coworker of mine went a few times to some of those tropical places. He says that the all inclusive deals are the best, not having to worry about paying for stuff. Said it was great being able to go up to the bar and grab a drink, go out to eat, etc.

I'd like to go on a real vacation, but being single and not very sociable, it makes vacations like that kind of odd. At least for me.

Wear Sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists
Whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

Seriously, tropical locations suck if you aren't used to them. I went out on a cloudy day in Hawai'i and still have spots on my shoulders 9 years later. As in my shoulders are completely spotted when before they weren't at all. Spent painful days in the bathtub upon returning home, etc. Put it on, you'll be glad you did.

I went to Guanajuato Mexico last year, and during some idle time I went out to the a golf course. I always wear jeans. Never wear shorts. But the club was a "fancy" club that had a dress code. Had to have shorts and a collared shirt. So I borrowed some from the plant manager I was visiting, and went out on the course.

We only did 9 holes, started raining, and a thunderstorm was coming through, the caddies told us we'd have to wrap up.

I got back to the hotel, and noticed the back of my calves were scorched. Painfully scorched. Parts of my skin that hadn't seen the sun in probably 12+ years.

FINE! But if you come back looking like a lobster smeared with red jello I reserve the right to point and laugh!

Not that I wouldn't have anyway of course... Smiley: grin

Even if it's all inclusive, tip regularly. You'll find you receive a better level of service than everyone else.

I've found that you can never go wrong sticking a fiver in the tip jar when you first walk up to the bar.

I'm not sure if it's true in Jamaica, but in St. Maarten's no one will serve you or answer your questions unless you say "good morning/afternoon/day" first.

Also most beaches were top optional, which for the most part was not a good thing.

So question. What's the going rate for tipping? What do you do at say, the swim up bar when you don't have cash on you? How much money should I be bringing for a week of tipping? What services do I tip for?

It doesn't have to be extravagant. $1 a drink will likely keep you topped up ahead of everyone else, although dropping $5-20 at the beginning of the bartender's shift will help most. Considering most people don't seem to tip at all while at all inclusives, even small tips get noticed.

USD. You can use CDN, but USD far more recognized, so if you give $5, they'll know they got $5

Anything that really requires people to pay attention to you. Bar and wait staff mostly. Anyone that carries your shit for you.

When I travel, I tend to tip the maid service daily. Other stuff - wait staff, etc. - I tip as I go, and longer-term arrangements - dive guides at a resort if I've signed up for multiple days - I tip at the end.

And you'd be better off to say your American than German, should a situation arise that requires you to choose something other than Canadian.

I bet you do.

I waggle my eyebrows suggestively until that becomes an effective piece of innuendo.

We could be here a long time.
