To be fair, I work on a lot of HP workstations at work. I can pull almost everything and replace them without even using a tool. Except the cpus and the boards. These require tools and take a **** of a lot more time. Pretty equivalent amounts of time. The difference being that if I pull the entire board with cpus and memory and swap it out for an entire board/cpu/memory trio from a known working system, it's done and takes about the same amount of time it would take to replace one cpu. And that may or may not be the problem. Um... But that's not what I'm basing my argument on. I just point it out as a reference point. While these are not typically used for home computing, they're also a far cry from appliances. Again, I mention this only to respond to your "I've never seen any design" comment.

Your argument is even more absurd and distant from reality when it comes to HP workstations. And shows a marked lack of troubleshooting.

Quote:
Every fan designer seems to have his own idea of the "best way" to attach a fan to a heatsink. Then comes the fun of releasing the cpu lever and replacing the cpu. This is admittedly not the pain that it once was (bent pins no longer the issue it once was). Assuming you have a well designed socket, this isn't too terrible, but if the board is "old", that may also not be the case. Then you have to re-attach the new heatsink and fan assembly. Which again, can be a pain in the ****.

I just suspect our experiences are different.

To be fair, I'm sure our experiences are vastly different. As I pointed out before I'm likely an extremely stubborn *********. I've stepped on a CPU laying on the floor, then bent every individual flattened pin back to straight. And proceeded to use that CPU for another...two or three years. That's a special kind of insanity. And stupidity.

While Gbaji is wrong about the amount of hassle it takes to swap the processor from the MB, he isn't wrong about the fairly common case of people not really updating their tech till it's positively ancient, and thus they'd be better off just be building something new, rather than trying to salvage old crap. There is a somewhat over-representation of people here who keep fairly current on tech and upgrade parts often.

Well, yeah, you'd think that people congregating on a gaming website would tend to care a bit more about their equipment.

"Most people" don't build anything. They just use that old Core 2 box running Win XP until it doesn't Facebook like it used to then they head to Best Buy to get a new Dell. There's no debate on what they should upgrade because they're not so much "upgrading" as throwing the old internet machine in the basement* and buying a new one. People who bother building a system (and certainly a gaming system) are a bit more in tune.

*Where it will sit for the next fifteen years because people think that a fifteen year old computer still holds some sort of value.

That was a misstatement on my part. My fault. I meant that it was as much hassle to do one as the other.

Yeah...but it isn't. At all. It's not even vaguely close. What you are saying is "changing sparkplugs is about as hard as changing crankshafts".

Listen, I find it completely plausible he sits in a closet and swaps motherboards. I can't think of any other skill set he's demonstrated. Maybe HP workstations require you to saw off a titanium nub from the backside of MBs. I wouldn't know because I've never had a job where I assembled things with an aggregate difficulty of a 9 piece wooden puzzle.

The game I came to this website for can play quite well on a crappy old Dell computer from 10 years ago.

I used to play EQ on a Dell Inspiron laptop from 2000. Came with 256MB RAM and an 8MB GeForce2 video. Those I upgraded to 512MB and 16MB and played on for five years or so. It still works; last time I used it I installed a Release Candidate of Win7 just to see if it would run (it did).

I played EQ on a Compaq with a K6-2 processor and 64 megs of memory. Also had on-board video. I eventually upgraded it to 256 megs and put some GeForce card in there; PCI back when AGP was king. I still remember struggling through turning off the on-board video in the BIOS so the computer would recognize the new video card. Pretty sure that must have been around Luclin since the system requirements took a jump then.

I came home to learn that one of my 140mm case fans had died. Fortunately my keyboard displays the temperature so I immediately knew something was off when it was a balmy 52C. And lame Best Buy has one case fan in their store, a 120mm that had a cfm of... 40.

So before I pilgrimage off to Tiger Direct, tell me: should I just replace my case now as well to take advantage of the new features?

I would say that would depend on what feature(s) your current case may be lacking. That being said, I have a 140mm case fan sitting here that's all yours if you wanna pay for shipping. CFM of nearly 60.

A minor point in gbaji's favor, the cpu for one of my mobos was screwed into the back, and so removing the cpu did require removing the motherboard.

Man, I went to Tiger Direct just to find out that the warehouse store is going out of business. Of course, their "clearance" price on a WD 2TB HD was more than Newegg's price so that might help explain it. Still, it was nice to have a place to drop in and grab stuff when I needed it rather than wait on shipping. At least there's still Micro Center (further drive though).

It is a far drive, but I had nothing but good experience with it ( as far as brick stores go -- it is like the opposite of bestbuy in terms of staff ) when I need something yesterday.

Really? The one here, which is, ironically, in view of MIT is staffed by just complete idiots. Maybe they pay too poorly and it's too easy to find a better job if you know what RAM is in Boston. I only every order things online for pickup there, the staff is so bad things are in the wrong isles.

I once applied to a new Micro Center opening up in Westchester a few years ago. They were wholly unimpressed by my PC build skills because I was unfamiliar with neon case lightning. They suggested I try BestBuy, so I got a job with HP instead.

Maybe he meant that the staff is so bad, they put stock on the Isle of Man or something.

Anyway, I don't need staff I just need a place to grab the odd component without waiting three+ days so I'm not sitting around because of a missing molex adapter.

Also, you'll all be relieved to know that although Tiger Direct was sold out of 140mm fans, I got a 120mm Vertex fan with a CFM of 70 and it seems to be working well enough. Was under ten bucks, too.
