Since the "Things we'd be talking about" thread turned into political stuff and I ran across something I had to share, I made a new thread.

Once and for all, let me say it: GODDAMMIT JAPAN. Edit: Mildly NSFW.
Quote:
Japan has produced the ultimate lotion made from the tears of a 2D girl. Made in Japan by Magic Eyes, this lotion contains a mixture of collagen, hyaluronan, and placenta, that is very kind to the skin and is adequately slippery, making your whole onanie experience one of the best ever. This is perfect for those who are sensitive and want a high quality lotion for their onanie sessions. Comes in a large 500ml spray bottle.
I have got to quit reading random things from my twitter feed.

Sorry, only the tears of a real life girl can be considered the ultimate lotion.

Police department in Maine pays $300 Ransomware demand

Best part...
Quote:
“It definitely wasn't intentional,” he said. “Next time, we'll just pay the ransom on the first day and be done with it.

..."next time"? Smiley: dubious

Edit: It seems this isn't an isolated problem

So they had critical files apparently necessary for the operation of their department on a system where such files were directly accessible to someone using their email and web software. And they didn't have backups of these files.

Honestly, paying the $300 ransom is the least of their problems.

I would be more surprised if that weren't the case.

Sadly, you're probably correct. I guess it's just jarring to me that an organization which appears to have an IT person on staff (although I suppose that could just be secretary Myrtle's son who is "good with computers" or something) and actually has files that are critical to their operations, but can't do some really basic network data structuring to avoid stuff like this. My point about this being the least of their problems is that while a cyberthief getting a few hundred bucks in ransom makes the news, for every time that happens there's going to be 100,000 other times where data is lost, corrupted, mangled, etc via pure accidental user error. Not having any sort of process to insert, view, and backup critical files for any enterprise is just asking for trouble. Again, malicious hackers are really the smallest threat. Joe dumbskull cop fatfingering his way to deleting your departments police reports for the last 6 months is a far greater threat.

They could have, but it would have cost an extra nickel in taxes, so it was cut from the budget. The free market will take care of it.

Nah. It was probably the unions afraid that any new technology improvement might result in a lost job.

Dunno, this easter a cop was complaining about Samsung Galaxy s6 not having an exchangeable battery so there is hope.

Seriously, the S6 is such a huge step backwards from the S5. The 4k screen is the only thing about it that's an improvement, and that isn't enough to warrant switching phones.

They are trying a little too hard to be apple, which is a shame because I their s2 was decent ( got mine about 3 years ago and if it wasn't for my sister, I would have kept even longer ). So now I got myself entry level asus ( zenfone5 ). It is better, and it was cheaper.

I finally gave up my S2 a month ago for an LG G2. Which I realize is practically archaic technology these days but, for a caveman in a hide sack and carrying a stone axe, having bronze armor and a sword is still pretty sweet. Also, I can't make myself spend over $200 on a phone.

Flea still has her S2 and is waiting for the S5 price to drop now that the S6 is out. She was thinking about an S6 but couldn't justify it as being hundreds of dollars "better" than the S5.

My S3 is still working, and some cheap company flip phone that's somehow still going but I guess that one is because it gets little use.

Non-political random thing. My 21 month-old granddaughter is killing me. I can't take much more. I walk in every night and she forces me to spend the next 40 minutes or so with her, "reading" her big picture book, watching youtube videos of ducks (there's a Nature documentary that she loves, that actually calls itself a "Duckumentary" in the opening titles - what's become of this staid and stodgy old production company I remember?).

We end with a couple of episodes of Peppa Pig. I am rather an expert at this.

(if you don't have a toddler, or if you believe they will never succeed in life if you allow them to watch children's cartoon shows, you won't get the reference)

My kid is on YouTube at least half of the time he's on his tablet. He has some cycle of videos he must pick and cycle through of various songs and skits. Strange thing is that I never see him watching anything else -- he never hits some unrelated video link but always finds what he actually wants to see. I thought before about setting him up with the new "kids" version of the YouTube app but it seems pretty unnecessary. Slow motion girls on trampolines and ISIS beheading videos hold no allure for him over "The Wheels on the Bus" sung by construction paper people for the 50th time.

I still used a Razr flip as my primary phone circa 2011.

Is it wrong that I have never in my life paid for a cell phone? Don't even know how to go about doing such a thing, or what a "good price" for a phone or contract would be.

It's not very difficult, honestly. Generally, giving money to people isn't - though there are, of course, exceptions.
