It's the height of hubris for a foreigner to stick her nose into the gun control debate. But sometimes it's just so hard not to share how we outsiders looking into the USA goldfish bowl view it all:

They're called amendments for a reason. They're supposed to change as needed.

Do you want to know why I use a spoon? You see, guns are too quick. You can’t savor all of the little…emotions. In their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way…I knew your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?

Also, my government won't let me have anything more dangerous.

This pretty much captures my thoughts on the subject (and it was written by another Englishman, no less).

It's hard to tell if he's being serious or sarcastic.

Take it at face value; is he wrong?

More of a massive strawman than "wrong". But it's in NRO so I imagine that it appeals to its intended readership. He didn't submit it to NRO so all the liberals could read it.

He's not wrong about the process that would be involved. My question is whether he's seriously suggesting that people should actually attempt this, or using sarcasm to show how absurd it would be and basically saying "shut up about gun control because unless you're willing to actually do *this*, you're not going to accomplish anything".

Given that I've made that exact argument on this forum in numerous threads on gun control (absent sarcasm), it seemed relevant to ask the question. It was unclear to me whether he was actually berating those people he listed for not pursuing the course of repealing the 2nd amendment, or warning them that to effectively change gun laws in the US to be more like other nations, they'd have to take steps that they almost certainly can't succeed at, and probably don't want to even attempt. When I make that argument, I'm trying to get people to see that piecemeal restrictions that nibble around the edges of the 2nd amendment don't work, so unless they're actually willing to repeal said amendment, their efforts would be better placed in directions that don't target the ownership of guns as a whole, but rather attempt to better manage the reality of a nation where people have a constitutional right to that ownership.

Was he waving people off the issue, or encouraging them to make the attempt? I couldn't tell.
