NBC’s $12 Billion Olympics Bet Stumbles, Thanks to Millennials

So I didn't watch really any of it this time around either, seems like I'm not alone. Generally I like watching the Olympics, so to not tune in at all was kind of a surprise to me. Several reasons/excuses on my part:

1) Tape delayed content means I already knew who won.
2) Broadcast time in the evening is inconvenient for me, in addition to #1.
3) Official streaming and other replay options and online stuff required cable subscription.

I mean, if I could stream it at work in the background when the events were happening that'd be nice. Or watch on my phone on the way home from work. I'd watch adds for access, maybe pay a few bucks or something. Cable subscription just isn't worth it entertainment-wise these days, and the content is interesting, but not that interesting.

What say you?

Did you watch the Olympics?
Yes, I tuned in frequently.:0 (0.0%)
I caught some of it.:6 (40.0%)
I wanted to watch, but didn't because reasons.:4 (26.7%)
I dislike sports and maybe also sport-related threads.:5 (33.3%)
Total:15

I caught "some" but "some" was about 45min combined women's beach volleyball spread over two evenings. Which I only saw because it was playing in prime time while my wife had the TV on. I think I saw maybe five minutes worth of women's long jumping as well.

I feel like the shift to rotating two-year schedules has made the Olympics feel like less of an "event" since it's constant coverage of either the games, the post-game stuff or the preparation for the next games.

I think I was more looking for things to happen in Rio than the actual events themselves before I started to watch, and it never happened. Other than Lochte embarrassing himself, which is not exactly a new thing for him, it went pretty smooth. Which was a disappointment. I wanted a few stories of people starting the water events and then ending up incapacitated from toxic shock (or come out of the water deformed and wearing pink tutus) or something. Nothing really happened to make it interesting to watch. The Filipino Men's Diving Team seemed to forget which direction they needed to be when entering the water and the Ethiopian swimmer with the paunch was really about it.

I'm reading that the Japanese Prime Minister dressed up as Super Mario on the last day. I guess that'd be interesting to look up on Youtube.

CBC did an amazing job, every event could be streamed from the website, they had tons of live coverage, and no nonsense about tape delay.

Sucks to be in the USA I guess.

I didn't watch any of the Olympics by choice; doesn't really interest me to watch it.

Back when we lived closer to the border I would watch CBC's coverage and wish ours was more like that; to the point I didn't even turn on NBC any more. Things have gone downhill since then.

You generally likeable moose-lovers got something right it seems. Smiley: frown

Seems like people just don't watch TV as much as they used to. Just imagine how it'll be like in 20-30 years.

I watched the women's gymnastics in its entirety because I was in a hotel while traveling for work and didn't have anything better to do.

Other than that, I watched it only when there was nothing else on, maybe a few hours combined.

Moose is sooo good.

Now that I stream my shows I don't see commercials anymore so I don't get the lead up "THE OLYMPICS ARE COMING AND YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED ABOUT IT!!!!" subliminal messaging and as such no longer care about the Olympics. That bolt dude can rock it in the club though: https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/1651259/usain-bolt-appears-to-cuddle-and-kiss-rio-student-jady-duarte-after-olympics-success-as-pictures-shared-by-her-emerge-on-whatsapp-but-he-has-a-long-term-girlfriend/

I remember how as kids we would watch it all on ABC sports. Wide World of Sports was my favorite weekend show back in the 60's and 70's, and they always would have major track and field events. My parents even got us a new TV in 1964, because our cousin was on the USA track and field team. Sadly he caught a virus once he got to Japan. I blame it on the fact that he was featured on the cover of SI's Olympic edition.

I did plan on watching the gymnastics, but life happen and I missed it. All I ended up watching was some of the track and field over the week and then the closing ceremonies, since my daughter was over and had the TV on.

NBC's coverage is the major reason why I don't watch it that much. They spend too much time showing back ground stories of athletes and not enough of the actual events, that I want to see.

I would have watched the women's gymnastics, but NBCs coverage was so terrible it wasn't worth the effort. Too bad too, flying midgets are always amusing.

Not during the Summer. Fall rolls around, however, my DVR starts having panic attacks.

Closest thing I did to watching the Olympics was laugh at Wil Wheaton when he was getting buttmad that the first gold went to an American woman for Shooting. Smiley: tongue

At least, I think it was Wil Wheaton.

My mom had the Olympics on whenever she could, but I caught very little. Small samples of everything - though somehow I missed out on all the big events, like any of Gabby Douglas, or Michael Phelps' events. I did get to see the very beginning, and the very end, of the Basketball final. Being a Knicks fan I just wanted to watch Melo play.
