Ok. So the bug I've been debugging (seriously, like "try this, now try this, can you send us the output of this..." 80 times, with a dev team on another continent, so fun!) that's been the last holdup for stuff that's been held up for like a month finally got found and fixed. Which would be like a "hurrah!" moment normally, in actually means that the log jam that's been waiting for this fix is now free, which means even more freaking work. So seriously don't have time for the more "interesting" topics (despite them being quite interesting right about now).

So... Without further ado, I present a thread to talk about whatever random stuff you find interesting, or saw, or experienced, or whatever that you think was cool, or tickled a funny bone or whatever.

In my case, it was a sign I saw while driving to my mom's house (cause those nettles on her roof apparently wont rake themselves or something). It reminded me of how regional certain things are, and I immediately thought of all those poor suckers on Alla's who just have to suffer in mediocrity or something. I didn't take a picture or anything, so you'll just have to imagine the stereotypical hand written cardboard sign stuck to a post on the side of the road, with the following written on it:

Avocados
25 for $5

Yeah. Suck it. Do the math. My guacamole will be especially delicious today! ;)

Sweet.

More fun than the alternative pricing strategy; i.e. we figured out we can charge the same price as they do in the supermarket and people will still pay it because 'farm fresh' is a thing. Well, more fun for the consumer at least, I'd imagine the farmer is pumped he can get the whole grocery store markup and cut out the middleman. This observation also goes for Christmas Trees as well. I'll gladly pay the same price and get the one that is already cut down, at the vendor a few blocks down, and comes with a free wreathe, and two minimum-wage college students who will lift it on top of the SUV for me and tie it down.

Regional pricing is a pickle. Out here on the prairie "fresh" seafood is stupid expensive, but the buffalo steak is quite reasonable, thanks.

I'm always fascinated by local beer. Specifically how all locals hate the local beer, but everybody from elsewhere loves it. Case in point: I can't stand Goose Island 312, but folks from our East coast offices love it. By the same token, I love Natty-Bo, but the Baltimoreans never touch the stuff.

I'm also fascinated that anybody likes Yuengling. Stuff tastes like carbonated drain water.

Brown paper sack. I didn't know salmon had brown fur and long thin tails.

I got a bunch of chicken drumsticks for about $3 a kg, how does that compare to where you are? It's a pretty great deal here.

Grocery usually has legs and thighs for like 80¢ a pound. Huh, makes me realize I never really go looking for chicken.

About $2/kg locally if my math shakes out. More or less depending on sales and assuming you're buying a tray of 12-16 of them and not a package of four for some reason.

Main thing I've noticed is how much larger the raw drumsticks are versus the ones you get from fast food chicken joints or even the deli counter at the grocers. Mine has fried chicken for sale and the legs feel like they're the size of my thumb whereas the ones from the meat department could be used to club a cat.

Understood. The disparity is still striking, especially when buying cooked chicken from the meat counter at the grocer.

They do seem to have gone for quantity over quality. Suppose they're probably rather fatty anyway.

When I lived in California, I use to get a paper bag full of avocados for free from my ex's aunt who had a tree in her front yard. Ex also had friend from High School, who had a pomegranate bush in their yard, so I got them free too.

Still I miss being able to get huge artichokes for under a $1.50 and a bag of baby artichokes for just a dollar.

Plus we gleamed the fields on base, for melons and go pick fruit by the bags for only a dollar, after the harvest.

It's the tail end of pawpaw season. An old boss of mine has a couple trees and always has us come collect them before the raccoons damage the trees trying to get at them all.

I hear you can get free okra from a guy in Tennessee, but he makes you check out his sweet 5-disk CD changer first.

We typically wait until the last weekend of apple picking season here to go to the orchard when they're giving all the remaining apples away for free. We usually take like 100 pounds or so. Other than that, some of the regional stuff here that can be comparatively inexpensive would be blueberries, lobster, crabs, other random seafood depending on season... If I could get avocados for that price though, I'd way 300 pounds in no time. :D
