Most people plead guilty because they are guilty and want to avoid the maximum sentence for their crimes.

If Papadopolous just copped to a lesser charge to make it an easy day for the FBI, they wouldn't have kept it sealed for months. Papadopolous agreed to flip, spent a couple months working with the feds and the plea bargain wasn't revealed until Mueller had what he needed (or all he was going to get) from Papadopolous. There would have been no reason to keep it secret for months if it was rote "take the minor charge to avoid gambling on the judge" stuff.

This is pretty much note for note like the Grand Budget thread which was the genesis of "News from anywhere". Some of us are actually reading and digesting the news and making educated statements and Gbaji is basically throwing partisan haymakers under the guise of "I don't need that devil's news, I have it all figured out myself".

Also, not to make the obvious point, but if Papadopolous was "all they had", Manafort & Gates wouldn't be out on bail right now.

I found out yesterday that pleaded and pled are BOTH words. (I thought maybe pleaded was not actually a word, had to look it up, cause it looked so weird on the news.)

I know that the left has an obsession about Manafort, but the guy hasn't had any role in anything at all related to the Trump campaign, transition, or administration, for over 14 months. They literally hired him for his convention expertise, and then let him go about a month after the convention was over and they needed to move on to the general election. We can speculate about why, but it's possible that they realized he had some questionable dealings in his past, and didn't want anything to do with him.
I'm running on the assumption right now that being an outsider who wants to drain the swamp means you don't get the pick of the litter when it comes to people who are good advisors/managers/whatever to a political campaign.

Quote:
That's a crime now?
Just don't take their advice and do something stupid prior to letting them go and you're golden. Think that's what we're trying to figure out at this point. The guy was pretty obviously sketchy and not fully vetted before he came onboard, and there were plenty of people in the campaign that didn't like him, or any of the others caught up in this mess so far. Then again, you play the cards you're dealt. Too many people didn't want to be associated with Trump at that point in the election, and someone with a clean record in politics would be a lot to ask even for a well-liked candidate.

Quote:
They'll never get around to investigating Clinton and her buddies. They'll rake the Trump administration over the coals for as long as they can, drag it out in the media and public eye as long as possible, and get as much political value for the Left as possible, and then drop it (with maybe a few minor charges against some side characters along the way), and then the media story will be that the whole Russian Meddling thing is "old news", and has "already been investigated to death", and "let's just move on", when it comes time to look into anything on Clinton's side of the aisle.
I have Podesta pinned as more of a sacrificial lamb kind of thing right now. Getting him gone would make it appear the Dems took their lumps and rooted out the evil on their side, making any resistance to further investigation from Trump seem more suspect in the court of public opinion.

Double posts shouldn't be hidden, they should be celebrated. Let them come out in the open and we can love and respect them for what they truly are.

Trump's cabinet and advisors are largely made up of unqualified sycophants and cronies with conflicts of interest. Trump had trouble attracting strong talent because people expected him to bomb and didn't want to be attached to that mess, not because he threatened anyone's "swamp".

You know I was focusing on the "promise to drain the swamp" part, right?

Yeah. I was replying to SPG's notion that Trump couldn't get good help because of his "drain the swamp" (false) pledge.

The only thing funnier than the "drain the swamp" pledge was how out of the way they went to demonize Goldman Sachs only to basically fill half the cabinet with them.

Meh, I used it because it was his words, and it works well enough. Also what Joph said too, there was plenty of reasons not to want to be attached to that mess he had going, especially for much of the race when he looked certain to lose. Don't think he ended up with these people by chance.

For what it's worth though I think there's some truth to the claim. In that he seems more interested in putting his own cronies into places of power, rather than recycling those from previous administrations. My Smiley: tinfoilhat side wonders if he's more interested in weakening many institutions, or using his appointments as political distractions, rather than simply having a traditional appointment like fiscal conservative running the department. Kind of took "drain the swamp" was code for "get on board with my agenda or I'm replacing you." He's made plenty of threats to other Republicans along those lines, and someone defying him usually brings out the "drain the swamp" rhetoric from the base, regardless of past allegiance.

Basically it's a politically savvy way of being a giant ass to everyone who disagrees with him.

You have to give it to them, they have some balls to do it now. There seems to be general the air of imperceptibly shuffling away from POTUS among the political class.. what exactly are they trying to gain here? Do they face hardcore Trump electorate or something?

The Russian lawyer who met with Trump's team is now saying that she's willing to testify that Trump Jr offered to revisit the Magnitsky law and also, oh, did she have any dirt on Clinton doing anything illegal?

Yup. Now we get to add more non-committal answers and disappointment to the whole thing. With all the other charges flying around involving other people in the administration this meeting is still the dumbest part of it. Mostly just Jr being all grumpy that he didn't get to play big-boy political games like the others in his dad's campaign.

2/10 wouldn't rent the episode a second time.
