I wonder if trolling for teens in malls had anything to do with it.

My favorite part was his wife publicly saying "We don't hate Jews, we have a Jew!"

Yeah, Moore was the worst possible candidate and they would have kept the seat with Strange (or probably almost anyone else).

However, all the special elections and state elections thus far have shown real movement towards the Democrats with districts that are +20 R keeping the seat by four or five points instead of twenty. And Virginia's state GOP lost around fifteen seats in the state legislature. So, while Strange would have won, if the result was Strange +5 instead of Strange +22, it wouldn't have surprised me. This should be very worrying to Republicans since few places are as deeply red as Alabama and a fifteen or twenty point leftward swing means a Democratic victory in a whole lot of places (as we saw in VA).

Trump's base turned on him fast too, "Trump really supported Strange" and "Moore had too much baggage" and "guy is part of the swamp that needs to be drained" and "his actions around girls less than half his age were pretty disgusting" and so on and so forth. All quotes from /r/the_donald this morning...

Guess we figured out what it would take to turn Alabama blue well, at least temporarily.

That'd be kind of bad for the environment. Thankfully they have plenty of teenagers and a poor sex education curriculum. Smiley: rolleyes

Yup. Although (per 538) the write-ins would have had to break 9:1 for Moore if they were to swing the difference. Without the ability to write in, I'm guessing many of those people would have just stayed home.

Kentucky state Rep. Dan Johnson was found dead of a single .44 gunshot wound near Mount Washington in a probable suicide Wednesday, a day after he denied allegations of sexually assaulting a 17 year old in 2013. Prior to taking his life he posted on social media that "GOD and only GOD knows the truth, nothing is the way they make it out to be. AMERICA will not survive this type of judge and jury fake news. Conservatives take a stand," which I ... guess he did.

He might have been, but now that his wife wants his seat as a congresscritter herself I'm forced to speculate that she straight up murderized him. So at least she's willing to get her hands dirty and put the work in.

Paul Ryan says that Americans need to have more babies because that's apparently the only possible way for a nation to increase its population of young and working age people. I can't possibly think of any other way.

No we're DONE. Smiley: mad

Guess that explains the Republican anti-abortion stance and poor sex education in schools. It's better than letting brown people into your country.

Okay, but we'll need to swing by the hardware store on the way home to buy some paint, and maybe duct tape.

I was reading some analysis this morning that suggested Arizona may be turning purple this time around, as Jeff Flake's replacement is either going to be Kelli Ward or anyone else, and anyone else may just win it.

I know what you're thinking and while its worked for hundreds of years, there's no way it could work now.

My vote doesn't matter!
Quote:
A Republican seat flipped Democratic in a wild recount Tuesday - with the Democrat winning by a single vote - creating a rare 50-50 tie between the parties in the House of Delegates and refashioning the political landscape in Richmond.

Still two races being recounted but that's sixteen State House seats lost by the Virginia GOP in last month's election.

Well if you're registered to vote in Virginia it matters, otherwise you might going to jail for voting illegally. Those of us in safe red or blue states will have to take solace in the fact that while our vote might not be super important in big elections, at least we get bombarded by far far fewer political adds.

I'd like to point out that none of the losing votes mattered. in the maximal case scenario for a majority winner take all system, 50% or more of the votes can never matter.

Technically, none matter until you reach the tipping point and they all matter, then you hit diminishing returns.

Votes that matter isn't the same as confirmation of victory. Votes that don't matter are votes that when removed do not affect the results. Any votes for candidates who did not win or in excess of the minimum number needed to win are irrelevant to the outcome of a winner take all system.

If Adam wins against Bob 60-40 then 19 Adam voters could have stayed home and Adam will have the number he needed to win. All 40 of Bob voters could have stayed home because Bob could not have won. 41/100 votes mattered.

It's like putting together Ikea furniture. Just because you know they give you spare screws doesn't mean you'll throw any away before you're done because you're not sure how many you will need in the end. But after you're done, it's clear certain parts are just extras.

If a majority or plurality of votes are required then the number of votes that matter in a winner take all election is the region bounded by

Z<=Ceiling([N+1]/2)
and
Z>=1

where
N is the number of votes cast
Z is the number of votes that matter

On the contrary, at least 50% of the votes always matter. It's really simple if you think about it.
