Paul Manafort was convicted Tuesday of not paying taxes on more than $16 million in income and lying to two banks when he sought millions of dollars in loans—a stunning fall from grace for the onetime Trump campaign chief who earned some $60 million as a star political consultant in Ukraine.

The 12-member Virginia jury of six men and six women reached the guilty verdict on eight counts after four days of deliberations, but couldn't agree on 10 additional counts of bank fraud and reporting violations Mr. Manafort faced. U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis declared a mistrial on those counts.

Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted Tuesday on charges related to the misuse of $250,000 worth of campaign funds for personal expenses and the filing of false campaign finance records.
The charges of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign finance violations and conspiracy were the culmination of a Department of Justice investigation that has stretched for more than a year, during which the Republican congressman from California has maintained his innocence.
[...]
Hunter was a founding member of the "Trump Caucus" in the House during the 2016 campaign, and alongside Rep. Chris Collins, was the first of two sitting congressmen to endorse Trump for President back in February 2016. Collins was indicted earlier this month on insider trader charges.

Having recently read The Authoritarians, it seems to fit fairly well. People who score highly on measures of right wing authoritarianism (which is not related to holding right wing politics) have been demonstrated by research to have highly compartmentalized thinking. It is more than a mere anecdotal observation.

Trump thinks flipping (in the legal sense, not the property sense) is unfair and is mad that so many GOP people are corrupt. Well, he actually phrased it as being mad that the Justice Department is going after too many Republicans.
Bloomberg News wrote:
President Donald Trump blasted the plea deal taken by his former personal attorney Michael Cohen and suggested the practice of "flipping" low-level criminals by exchanging shorter sentences for testimony against others should end.

"For 30 or 40 years I’ve been watching flippers,” Trump said in an interview aired on “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning. “Everything’s wonderful then they get 10 years in jail and they flip on whoever the next highest one is or as high as you can go.”

"It almost ought to be outlawed,” Trump said. “It’s not fair."

Trump also complained that Republicans are targeted too often by federal prosecutors in the interview, which was taped a day after both the Cohen plea deal and his former campaign chairman’s conviction on tax- and bank-fraud charges.

Although Trump didn’t name Republicans he thought were unfairly charged, two of the first House Republicans to back his 2016 campaign have been indicted this month. Representative Chris Collins of New York has been charged with insider trading and Representative Duncan Hunter of California was indicted this week on charges he and his wife used campaign funds to pay personal expenses.

Really if the guy didn't want everyone to be out to get him he probably should have played nice with at least one of the major parties, that way there'd at least be some reason for someone to cover his *** and he could pass it off as a political stunt. Begging for sympathy after being the aggressor doesn't usually go over well.

This is really reminiscent of Mueller rolling up the Gotti crime family.

Maybe especially so because Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen could not look, dress and act more like gangsters if they tried.

Another day, more election fraud. Oh, hey, it's by a Republican. Quelle surprise!
Washington Post wrote:
Taylor is hunkered down in the midst of a strange campaign scandal involving forged signatures on petitions to get a competing candidate into the race. Taylor has been subpoenaed to a court hearing Wednesday in Richmond to determine his role and whether that third candidate is improperly on the ballot, while a special prosecutor separately investigates possible campaign law violations.
[...]
Taylor’s help came to light in a local television report a month ago. Since then, questions have emerged about dozens of the signatures turned in by Taylor’s staff. Some belonged to dead people, many signed in similar handwriting. Even the name of local Republican Del. Glenn R. Davis Jr. was apparently forged, and his name misspelled.

It's called self preservation, Mister President. That's why politicians don't change libel laws. If they did, their careers would cease to exist.

Trump should totally sue Woodward for all those lies. And then Woodward can play his 200 hours of taped conversations in court.

The transcript of Trump calling Woodward to ask why he wasn't interviewed is something else. Trump manages to admit that he knew about the request for an interview and lie about not knowing about it in the same breath. What a fucking clown college.
