I'm thinking of rejoining Ffxi....and from what I can tell my Garuda became Lakshmi. It's bern ages and I don't even think my characters will still exist anyway, so odds are good it will be a fresh start. Well I'll find out for sure when I dare touch my account...assuming I even remember it. It's written down....somewhere. /search
I was gone 19 months, and they still had my characters. I reactivated without a problem.
I'm also in three different linkshells, and I'm sure I could get you into at least one if you need people to do things with.

Yays! There is hope for recovering my characters. That's hopeful. I'll have to see about the LS thing once I'm in the game again. So much patching to do I keep putting it off ^.^;;;
If you still have your POL info, there's zero problems getting your character back! 
Even if you deleted your character (I will never understand why people do that), it's still easy to get it back if you have your original info.
The patching won't take too long at all. A few hours at most... updating only takes a long time when there's a brand new update and everybody is downloading it at the same time. If you really want to make it fast, there's a torrent at BG with every single update since NA release. If you download and extract it, you can probably update FFXI in a matter of minutes!
The game has changed a lot in the last year! It's an entirely new experience! Your Garuda is now Lakshmi, but we all get along just fine! ...as long as you're willing to accept your new Lashmian overlords...

Yeah I never deleted them, they just went to the great cold storage in the sky. So that should be ok then. Yes...my vast treasure trove of worthless junk will be available. :D I really, in all seriousness, haven't played FFXI since...hmmm Chains. I've made a few attempts to come back (mostly during the start of WotG) but they got aborted by technology failure.
