The Last AirbenderFollow

#1 Jun 05 2010 at 8:05 PM Rating: Decent
I haven't seen a post for this yet, so I figured I'd start one. Before I saw an ad for this movie, I'd never watched the show. The preview looked pretty awesome though, and I found all three seasons on Netflix so I decided to start watching it. Despite the fact that it's geared more towards kids, I really enjoy it, and I'm pretty excited about the movie.

I'm not super upset about the "racebending" of the film, but it does bug me a little bit. Mostly because it seems weird that the two characters that are actually dark skinned (Katara and Sokka) are being played by white actors, and that the Fire Nation cast members are being played by Indian actors when in the series they were all very light skinned.

Nickledeon is like Disney, they don't care about the accuracy of their merchandise as long as it's enough to get the kiddies in the theaters and the parents buying the official movie toys.

I'd watch it if weren't in 3D. I'm getting so sick of that sh*t. The glasses are uncomfortable, and after an hour or so I get a headache.

Same. Given the option I'd MUCH rather watch he non-3D version of a movie.

Anyway... Personally I think the movie is looking pretty good from the trailers I've seen.

The gf and I started watching the series this week. Although we're only a few episodes in, I can tell it's going to be enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the movie.

From what I can tell the movies are gonna follow the TV series. The first movie is gonna end with the siege of the northern water tribe by the fire nation, the second movie is gonna be about Azula capturing Ba Sing Se, and the final movie will be Aang vs Fire Lord Ozai.

Aye pretty much seasons 1,2, and 3 all in..a 2hour movie?

I am looking forward to seeing it. I really hope there is no twist at the end of the movie..that would just be odd lol.

hmm. uh... go see it in 2D? XD
There is only one theater around me that shows movies in 3D and I refuse to go to it anymore after they wouldn't sell me tickets to a rated R movie.
I saw a preview for the new Resident Evil movie that is to come out, it is going to be in 3D. 3D everything!

Wait until 3D **** comes out...

If I wasn't at work I would post the link where they already have a prototype channel that will work with the Samsung 3D HDTV.

Not quite. Season 1 will be the first movie, season 2 will be the second, and season 3 will be the third. Smiley: tongue

They should totally take a 2 year break in between movies 2 and 3. So that it matches the show more.

They need to take a 2 year break just to find some actual Asian actors for the roles.

Don't believe me? Then imagine this: A remake of the movie about General Patton starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. That's how bad the casting choices were.

Around here, movies that are in both 2D and 3D are only shown in 3D. It makes more money for the theaters since they can charge extra for it. It's either 3D or not at all. I'm going with not at all.

Finding good asian actors is like finding waldo. Sure, it can be done- but sometimes it's just a pain in the *** because somebody shooped him out of the picture.

How would that make it match the show more? The three seasons take place over the course of one year.

I agree that it would be really nice to have more Asian actors in the movie. M. Night claims he's going to do his best for that in the next movie: Current TV interview. We shall see.

I like his explanation on his race choice. Also his idea on anime -> Real World races.

The TV series kind of surprised me with it's overall non suck. I will probably watch the movie because the TV show ended up hooking me. The final confrontation on the show was pretty awesome.

I'm not sure a live action movie is going to do this franchise justice. Sometimes animation nails it in a way that make the live action seem kitschy.

I thought the super deformed specials on the DVDs were some of my favorite parts of the show.
Especially the one where Katara chooses the Blue Spirit as her man, and Zuko is left wondering how the hell that happened.

So I went and saw it tonight (just came back). And I'm pretty sure when I woke up there was another thread about this (and the score on RT)..but yea I can't find it.

The Movie was. . . well I don't see book 2 or 3 being made.

I know it is hard to make a 24(or longer) episode cartoon into a 2-ish hour movie.

My main big gripes about the movie were:

1) The age of some of the characters. Age was never said in the movie, but Sokka looked to be 20.

2) The way names where pronounced. Aang was pronounced Oung (young but w/o the Y). Sokka was more said as Zzokka. Just made it really weird when names were being said.

3) In the cartoon, at the end of book one Aang goes all nuts when the fish dies. And then he goes all spirit form and gathers water around him to create the big fish/cat/panda spirit of the Water/Moon. In the movie he just graps his head and keeps on going about what he was doing. \\

4) Some of the motion (blur) made me get dizzy. Not cool when you are watching the 2D version of it...

What I did like:

1) Princess Yue looked like Princess Yue. Katara looked like Katara

2) Momo was in it.

If you have never seen the cartoon and no nothing of it, you may enjoy it or leave pondering on why you just spent money on it. If you have seen the cartoon, and not seen the movie yet...I'd hold off until you can rent it.
Out of a 10, I'd give it a 5 for trying.

They gave an average for the ages when Aang told Sokka and Katara that he was 112 years old (physical age 12 plus the 100 years spent in hibernation), I think it was mentioned when they first went to Omashu. All the other main characters are supposed to be 3-4 years older then him except for Toph who is 10 or 11.

Edit: Misread your statement about the ages, Jason Rathbone (the guy who played Sokka) is actually 26 so your observation is on the money.

My main issues was that it was entirely too short as well as all of Katara's defining moments were either non-existent, or given to someone else.
