Outsourcing is leading to shoddy animation (Naruto vs. Pain was an excellent recent example of horrendous off-animation).

I agree with some, but not all of those points.
That's not really a fair comment because a lot of people like that kind of thing. Not everyone wants something solid all the time (or ever, and that's OK too.) Sometimes you just want fluff. Now admittedly some fluff is better than others but still... A good story is always nice, but not 100% vital in an otherwise entertaining show.
Take something like Uta~Kata. It's literally a magical girl series with no villains. It's basically about girls hanging out over summer break and there's a neat transformation and a costume every episode. That didn't keep it from being a good and entertaining show though. Did it make me think hard and work to understand it? No. Was it entertaining and worth watching? Absolutely.
Or what about the people who bring us insane mind **** shows like Lain and Texhnolyze and then turn around and make silly, laid back slice of life series like NieA_7?
Sometimes you just want fluff, and that's OK.
I'm not sure what this means exactly.
Over the years an awful lot of people outside of Japan have attempted to make anime/manga and most of the time it hasn't worked. To some extent it's because people have this idea that anime/manga is inherently Japanese and everyone else who trys to draw that way is a poseur. My opinion though is that it's because people who would normally draw and write in their own style are going out of their way to try and make 'anime', and unsurprisingly (to me anyway) it doesn't work. This isn't always the case of course. There's a good amount of non-japanese 'anime' out there but there is a LOT more that's complete crap.
Not all of it had to be crap though. Some probably would have been a lot better had the authors and artists not gone out of their way to try and make 'anime' instead of doing things in their own style.

Pretty interesting review of the interview. Some of it sounds a lot like Sato is just sour grapes. He is trying to portray himself as one of the lone defenders of "good anime" out there. It sounds like his series Eureka 7 flopped and he was trying to blame it on the fact that the filler scenes were outsourced and made the characters look like Evangelion. Well, sorry Sato, but that's just bad marketing.
I agree that Japan has tried to keep a monopoly on their stuff; however, a lot of good manga I have read recently is coming out Korea (and shows up on mangafox). That's actually really good, and the styles are not so different. Some of the translations are little odd (seeing hyung instead of onii-san, for example), but you get used to them pretty easily. And after a ton of overload with slice of life and school days manga (seriously, picked like 10 random manga over the course of a couple of months and 8 were one of those genres...), new stories are good, even if they're from other countries. I don't care if it's Japanese; I care that it's entertaining.
As for people not caring about the story, again, sour grapes. Make your indie anime. Sato said he has a lot of respect for indie manga (and hip hop, oddly enough, which is super sold-out and overhyped in America) because they aren't mainstream. There's nothing stopping him from making that too... oh wait, except profits. If you don't want to starve, you make stuff that sells. Lots of people like fluff, hence why it is made. There's a market (usually smaller) for a good story, or today's problems, as well - it's just not as popular. A lot of people watch anime for a break from reality, so they like fluff. Nothing wrong with that.

When it comes to the last two, I agree to a certain extent. I really wish there were more western-type animes. For example, even though Desert Punk was nutty and had its' anime touch I liked how it connected with the real world too. The .308 pretty standard across assault rifles, winchester a common brand of shotgun. Sure there are some fantastic ones with no story, Minami ke is fantastic. But I don't want to watch every other anime as that.
I have to agree with most of what Locke said.
I really love that show. The fact that the two younger sisters look much like cartoon versions of my own younger sisters at those ages is a nice bonus.
It's more than just the looks that are similar, but I really don't want to derail the thread.

Actually, from an animation standpoint it was really, really good. The problem was that what was being animated was really stupid. It would have been better if they toned the animation style down a little bit, but the main problem was the stupid loony toons type events they decided to use.

Actually, from an animation standpoint it was really, really good. The problem was that what was being animated was really stupid. It would have been better if they toned the animation style down a little bit, but the main problem was the stupid loony toons type events they decided to use.

I liked Eureka Seven. And I typically dislike SOL that is all fluff, no substance. IMHO A series needs some backbone unless it can pull off things that I find witty/amusing consistently.
