I just got a nook. I've been searching for good free epub/pdf books.

My first download was book 3 of Garth Nix's Abhorsen Trilogy. I'd read the first two quite awhile ago but had never come across the last book in any of my used book haunts. You can get the whole trilogy - free in pdf format HERE.

Mostly, all I've I'm finding are the non-copyrighted classics and such.

Anyways, any one have any links to good free ebooks?

The only site I know of is Project Gutenberg. They only carry things outside of copyright, but those are probably the only legal free e-books you'll find readily available. The only other free e-book I know if is Machine of Death, which is a collection of short stories around a common theme that I've posted about before.

I'm sure you could find almost anything through torrent. I've found dozens of ebooks with one simple search. I know you can get them but dont know how difficult it would be to port to your reader-thingy

Yeah, I've found ones through torrent too. I'd rather not use it but instead hope to find books that the author or publisher has made free...or cheap.

Also, the Nookcolor has a book sharing program that is all legal-like that allows you to share copywrited content with other Nook users.

Getting books to the nook is done through a cord. The reader basically just acts like an external drive. You put whatever you want on it. It reads most standard file types. If you buy books or other content through barnes and noble, they'll ship um to your nook via wifi.

Does anyone know of a sites or sites that have a large archive of free ebooks? I'm mostly looking for ebooks in PDF format. Ive done many web searches and there are tons of sites with all fluff and very little ebooks for actual download.

The guttenham archive suggested above is close to what im looking for, but doessn't have any books in PDF format. :(

Baen makes a number of its fantasy/sci-fi books available for free.

Also, many public libraries now offer free e-books to borrow. Wouldn't be in PDF format since they need to be able to revoke your reading privileges after your "check out" period is over but still books and still free. You can download and read them though on your computer/tablet without ever needing to leave the house.

Amazon's cloud reader for the PC sucks. I bought some Avatar comics for cheap and reading them on my laptop is so annoying that I have only read the first couple pages off the first book. The interface is so clunky. Zooming and panning is needlessly complicated and interrupts me reading.

I got the Dr. Who comics from that one Humble Bundle for Flea and had to try a couple of the available formats before I found one that looked decent on the Android Kindle app. The high def PDFs looked like crap but the .mobi files came out nice.

Kindle Cloud Reader... for those of us without Kindles...

Cannot zoom in on the whole thing...
But if I Double-Click on the text, it "zooms"... if you can call that zooming. It's laughably bad...

I haven't looked into anything on my iPhone...

Edit:
Not really any better on the app. I don't know enough about the libraries as a whole to tell if this is just a ****** system from Nickelodeon on their digital comics, or if this is the standard. Why don't they just let me zoom the image as a whole...

I liked that series. Read it quite a while ago, however.

Found this on Reddit something like "Free internet services that should be taken advantage of". Has a few links that might help you find free ebooks.

I'm actually taking a Linux course from EDX this summer. The classes actually start a day after my actual college summer classes end.

Here is where you can find out about Nooks (B&N) free Friday offerings (typically an e-book and app). There will also be lots of 'comments' left of other free book opportunities.

Hey Elinda,
Put a copy of Calibre on your PC:

http://calibre-ebook.com/download

It is an amazing program, not just for organizing or reading e-books...but it's conversion capability from format to format is out of this world! Once the format conversion is done you can export to your favorite device.
You can then take advantage of all of the available formats:

One of the more useful free little programs I've ever downloaded.

This thread was actually started three years ago. I'm on my second Nook. Not that anything was wrong with the first, but I wanted the bigger screen and more memory space.

In hindsight, I kind of wish I'd gone with a more standardized tablet. B&N has made plenty of the Android apps available, but still, you can't simply get the app you want, when you want it from any old app store.

Amazon is offering [600,000 books from] its Kindle library on a subscription basis for $9.99 a month for as much as you can read. Presumably you wouldn't own the books but rather some sort of DRM would be in effect.

Edit: They advertise over 600,000 books. I don't know if that's their entire Kindle offerings or a portion thereof. On the plus side, this could potentially be your chance to read "Ravished by the Triceratops" without the shame of having bought a copy.

It's not the entire catalogue, but the only exclusions are some of the new releases and best sellers.

I enjoy my 10,000 sci-fi ebook collection. It doesn't fit on the new nook though. Which is why I got the Kobo Aura HD e-reader instead, which is a much much much better machine.

This is not quite correct. I almost jumped on unlimited, but where I searched fro Anne McCafferty and Terry Brooks neither of them are covered under unlimited. Another Quick search shows Stephen King doesn't looked covered either. I am taking a wait and see approach until I can find enough books that are unlimited to justify the cost....should not take too long. They do have a good selection just not for some of my favorites.
