If you're not watching the History channels neat TV show, Vikings, you should. It's about Vikings & while it's a fictional story, it's setting, props, & battles (well, not the battles themselves, more so how they battle) are all historically. accurate. It's also got Gabriel Byrne in it, who is awesome.
It's kind of like Game of Thrones, but without the magic (Unless you count religion as magic), & without the boobs (There are sex scenes, but they're PG13. The priest should have taken Ragnarr & his Wife's offer of a 3 some, for my amusement.)
It starts a bit slow, but I was hooked by the end of the 1st episode. The 1st 4 can be streamed @ the history channel's website. I'd link too it, but I'm lazy.

I admit, it is a bit weird learning about a show on the History Channel that isn't Pawn Stars or Modern Marvels.

I only saw about 10 minutes of the last episode, but I will grant that it was a pretty cool 10 minutes. GoT definitely seemed like a clear inspiration.
I watched most of Black Death this weekend. It was very GoTish also. Mostly because Sean Bean is killed yet again, but also the actress who plays Melisandre was in this movie. It was interesting from a religious vs morality pov.
I'll have to find when and where I can see Vikings. Looks watchable.

If you haven't already, you should read The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson, and then try to imagine a movie adaptation with moderate violence, some suggestive material and nudity, some sexual situations, brief strong language and/or soft drug use.

I mean, I don't remember if they actually do drugs in it (there's a reference to the berserks in it, if I remember correctly), but pretty much everything else is covered to excess, from gory violence to rape and underage marriage. Epic story, if you're into the viking stuff.

Anyone who's into medieval stuffs should definitely be watching this now. The last two episodes have been pretty fantastically entertaining. Since it's a finite series (I think?), it really doesn't **** around, there's been pretty major deaths to main characters, some great battles, & hilariousness in relations between the Vikings & Christians.
Seriously, Vikings sitting around having dinner with the King of Northumbria may have been the most entertaining 5 minutes I've seen on the boob tube all year.

I've only seen episode 1 so far but I loved it. 'course I've always loved medieval stuff and especially the vikings.
I'll probably check it out after they finish off this season. I've seen the commercials for it, and it definitely interests me, but I don't want to pop in right in the middle. As far as I can tell, it's been fairly successful, so I don't doubt that they'll find a way to bring it back after this run.
Season Finale is this Sunday (27). I really like the show, and they broadcast it has been doing well so I taking a big guess and am assuming there will be at least another Season. Or they are doing that half season (short season) junk and calling this a season (I think it has only had 8-9 shows for this season).

I did not like this season's ending. Actually the entire hour was kind of boring. Hopefully in 2014 it picks up in full swing.

Well, jeez. There can't be an epic battle *every* week.
I found it quite interesting plot-wise. Rollo the *** finally betrays his brother (not all that surprising, really). On the other hand, Ragnar is not cutting a very splendid figure for himself at the moment either. As to other events, I thought it was a bit harsh, having the plague take poor Gyda like that. I liked that Athelstan survived, though. I wonder if they're ever going to deal with how nearly being sacrificed has affected the dynamic of his relationship with Ragnar and/or the rest of the family.
Still very much looking forward to next season.
Also: $60 for a 9-episode season? And it's not even Blu-Ray? WTF, History Channel? WTF? (I'll probably still buy it, but I'll ***** about it the whole time.)

Okay, finally got around to watching this. I like it. It's like Game of Thrones, but with more vikings and less crazy dragon ladies.
What I don't like is how the vikings are portrayed as schizophrenic sociopaths. One moment they're being all friendly and the next they're cutting down people left and right without any apparent reason. She-viking is all "halt, don't rape that Saxon woman" one moment and just idly watching them kill other civilians the next. He-viking participates in slaughtering an entire monastery of unarmed monks, but when they get to the Saxon town, he's all "don't resist and we won't harm you". And Rollo (he reminds me of Jaime Lannister) kills random people for ***** and giggles, but then he helps an old man get a drink before he steals his cup. And don't even get me started on Floki. That guy is turning more insane every damn episode.
It's all very confusing, because I can't connect to any of the characters. The Saxon lords seem mighty high on their horses, but the vikings also seem ******* insane. I find myself identifying with the various redshirts they drag into every episode, like the Saxon soldier they killed after he helped them get to the town, and it makes me angry with the main characters. I can't even like the priest, because he's just another schizo. One moment he's all "please don't kill me" and the next he's like ********** you, viking dude who graciously spared my life".

I get that vikings raped and plundered, but the way they switch back and forth between good and evil makes it such a mess. At least the Earl is a consistent *******. He's like the boy king from Game of Thrones. It's impossible not to hate him, even if they try to make him a bit human by showing us why he's become such a ****.
Gonna see if the character development gets any better. Hope there's at least some consistency to their actions later on.

I've yet to see Vikings, but sounds like my kind of show. I am having trouble visualizing Gabrel Byrne as a Viking though.
Byrne actually did a good job, even if he didn't have a beard. I guess it's his thing, or something, because he was the only damn guy without a beard.
Watched all the episodes, and I'm looking forward to the second season. Still not sure what I think of Ragnar. The actor's random smirks and intense stare makes him seem slightly psychotic. You know... for a viking.
