Because I'm 99% sure a meth habit would be less expensive.

The same way meth-heads pay for their product.

LOL. Depends on how hard core one is about it, but comic book collecting isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things. Not sure how much they cost nowadays, but most comics come out once a month. So following a few isn't that expensive. Certainly less expensive than smoking, say, and less harmful for your health *and* the books often retain their value over time.

To be fair though, I stopped collecting when Marvel got ridiculous with their "you must follow 18 different books to follow the plot" bit. I mean, in a way, it was interesting that they made an effort to tie their world together like that, but it also meant you couldn't just follow a handful of books and enjoy them for themselves anymore. Not sure if they still do this, or have trimmed their line down since then (early 90s), but honestly, it wasn't until they started doing that that it got too expensive for a guy working near minimum wage to be able to afford them. You can always just buy how much you can afford (in theory).

Well I keep hearing that I should be reading Hawkeye and Young Avengers so, I'm guessing not.

[EDIT]

I almost bought the new Gambit today. It's been a long time since I last engaged with that character, but I used to love him...

I spend $60-100 each visit. It breaks down to like 25-50$ a month, but I don't go down to my comic shop every other week..i go every other month.
So I basically put money aside from the 2-3 pay days between each visit. The reason it varies is because they go ahead an pull comics for me, and before I cash out I check if there is anything else (new) or if I want to finally just buy them collection style books (IE: I bought both Kickass and Kickass2 Book, and the 1st of kickass 3 last visit).

How do I afford them? Well I have a full time job :/

They still kind of do this. Both DC and Marvel did this "reboot" thing about a year (or 2) ago. Marvel is really bad at this cross comic thing. ATM it is not as bad as it will, i'm sure, to be (they just did a Avengers vs. X-men thing...I didn't buy all 40000 comics to get the story lol).
From what I understand DC does it as well, or at least they this time around? I'm not 100% as I don't read DC.

I used to spend $20-$50 weekly when I picked up every Wednesday.

Now I just wait for the graphic novels.

My ten year old wallet says "Anime: Crack is cheaper."

Fortunately it was made by Mythic Ware and it's held up over the full decade I've had it. Cuz thanks to anime I can't afford a new one.

Buying anime is impossible in Japan. I don't understand how anyone could ever afford it. You're paying what we pay for an entire 12-13 episode series, for two episodes.

Manga however, it's really not that bad. You're only looking at 4-6 dollars per volume usually.

Not much different than reading the books in store.

I had to quit collecting comics twice because the hobby became too expensive and I had started from the mid 80s. Quit once in 2000, came back in 2005 then quit again in 2011. Though I miss it sometimes, some of the stuff Marvel has been doing lately makes me glad I quit.
