Well that was neat. Not super great, but interesting. If nothing else it's an obvious lead in to next season's mission.

Tom Baker cameo was fun too, even if what he said made no sense what so ever.

So is the numbering going to change now that they consider 'the war doctor' a real doctor? (instead of a 'not doctor' who's best left forgotten) Also, does Clara still have the vortex manipulator? They didn't show her returning it.

Made perfect sense to me. Way I see it is that was not a past actor that played The Doctor just making a cameo but a future Doctor who is dropping hints rather then just saying spoilers. Though it is sad he never gets the best companions. After watching it again Billie Piper's acting for the "Moment" was far better then it was for Rose. Guess a few years of experience really paid off or it could have been she didn't have that much to really do but either way it was a knock out the park.

Not a bad story, but the Doctor destroying Gallifrey to end the time war and the guilt from doing so forged his entire personality. Changing that just seems wrong. The way they set it up with the warrior Doctor not remembering that he didn't wipe out his people helps to avoid time line issues, but it feels cheap. They took the great tragedy of the Doctor's life and gave it a happy ending. It's not a storyline choice that I would have made.

Agreed. I won't have done it that way either. I feel like it cheapens much of the last 8 years worth of characterization.

Also:
The time lords were frozen in the middle of a war with an enemy that still exists and still wants them all dead. What's keeping the Time War from starting up again if they do restore Gallifrey?

And what was up with Smith and Tennant not realizing that Hurt hadn't blown everything up yet? Hurt regenerated almost immediately afterwards. There was no point where he had already done it and was still that incarnation. You'd think at least one of them would have remembered that.

Well, the Doctor sees all things past, present and future, at all times, and it drives him mad. (revelation at the end of the Ecclestone/Bad Wolf series) I think he's a bit overloaded with information, because otherwise he'd be a serene god, who IS all things past, present, and future, all at the same time.

Therefore I'm quite prepared to give the scriptwriters a waiver on him sometimes knowing things unrelated to himself, and sometimes not knowing even important things about himself because it's lost in the noise.

Why do they force us to steal?

I have the internet, I have money, they don't offer any legitimate way for me to watch it.

Why do they force me to go the less than legal route?

If you bothered looking at any of those sources, they don't have it yet. I looked.

You can't just trust a random post on blogspot or tumblr, just because it is the first hit on Google.

Edit:
Seems Amazon has finally put it up, about 5 hours after I gave up looking and found it elsewhere. For 8 dollars though.
iTunes store finally too.

For the whole morning looking, they only had the "minisodes" for rent, at 2.99 a pop, and were advertising them as "Day of the Doctor" from the search results. Getting your hopes up, but when you actually read the description it says "the last day mini episode" or some BS like that.

The point is, no one was forcing you to do anything, you just had to wait a bit.

If you wanted to watch it now without waiting until some unannounced later time of availability... you had very limited choices and none legitimate. Unless I found a working UK Proxy that would let me watch it online from BBC.uk, but even that is not so legitimate.

_My_ point being with how much they had been hyping this episode online and all over, I would have expected it to be more readily available or at least have them tell us when.

Props to Steve Moffat, he is slowly repairing the destruction of Dr Who cannon by Russel Davies. I enjoyed the episode, even if it was a JJ Abrams trick of changing history etc, etc. Billy Piper really needs to marry me right now.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The theater experience was well worth the money and waiting 2 extra days, and the 3D wasn't bad either.

Well, with the time streams in flux it at least explains how Smith's, Tennant's, & especially Eccelstein's Doctors were so haunted by regret. I would guess Smith's Doctor DOES remember though, especially after his Discussion with Baker's Curator Doctor...& only for one more episode.

Viewing McGann's movie, which shows McCoy's regeneration from 7 to 8, this episode finally ties the old Series with the new. I thought it was great, with all the little nods to the old series I watched as a kid (the wall of past companions was great, as was UNIT's appearance - I loved the assistant with Baker's scarf, & the Zygons). Billie Piper was never better, Tennant & Smith played great off each other, & Hurt's gravitas brought much needed seriousness to their wackiness.

It should make for a very nice transition to Capaldi's Doctor & I'm sure the search for Gallifrey (in the painting) will play prominently in his series. SInce 11 doesn't know how it gets there, Capaldi (& maybe even Baker?) may play a roll in getting it to the archive.

Interestingly, the number of Doctors may be even more fudged up than just the introduction of Hurt's though - if you recall Tennant used up one of his regenerations to stay alive before his regeneration into Smith's Doctor (the 50th takes place when he's avoiding his inevitable death after that regeneration & before his final battle with the Master). Taken with what we know in the 11 second preview of the Christmas special, Smith's Doctor goes to Trenzelore & appears older. so I wouldn't be surprised if Capaldi's Doctor is the first regeneration beyond 12... We'll find out at Christmas!

One of the UK papers yesterday had an "exclusive," it's probably complete bs but they state that Matt Smith is actually the last Dr (the twelfth regeneration) counting John Hurt and the regen David Tennent used to heal himself, making Capaldi something else - perhaps to do with the Sister's of Khan - they did say in the mini episode they have power over the Doctor's regeneration.

I watched this yesterday, didn't see it when it first came out - makes a bit more sense now I've seen Day of the Doctor. Yay Peter Davidson! He was my Doctor.

Doctor Who: Steven Moffat clears up the whole Doctor regeneration problem… sort of

Confused about the Doctor’s regenerations after watching The Day of the Doctor? Steven Moffat has sought to clear up any misunderstandings.

So, when John Hurt was introduced as the Doctor earlier this year it caused a problem among fans. Which Doctor is he?

When we saw eighth Doctor Paul McGann regenerate into John Hurt in Night of the Doctor it confirmed he was the ninth Doctor – moving former ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston to the 10th Doctor. David Tennant became the 11th Doctor and Matt Smith formerly the 11th became the 12th.

Or not. Because John Hurt is the War Doctor – and thus outside the numbering, apparently. But, actually not really.

Oh, dear.

Speaking at the Doctor Who Official 50th Celebration at London’s ExCeL Moffat cleared the whole thing up… sort of.

‘He has no more ever called himself the 11th Doctor than he would call himself Matt Smith. The Doctor doesn’t know off the top of his head [what number he is]‘ he said.

‘If you worry about such things, and I do, then I specifically said John Hurt’s Doctor doesn’t use the title. [Matt Smith's Doctor] is in his 12th body but he’s the 11th Doctor, however there is no such character as the 11th Doctor – he’s just the Doctor – that’s what he calls himself.’

Hmmm. Not sure that’s going to satisfy all the fans – so maybe this explanation from Steven Moffat will convince you:

‘The numbering doesn’t matter, except for those lists, that you and I have been making for many years,’ he said. ‘So I’ve given you the option of not counting John Hurt numerically – he’s the War Doctor.’

(And also at the panel Matt Smith wanted to point out that he actually liked being the 11th Doctor because he likes the number, and Moffat seemed ok with that.)

Ok, so does that mean that Peter Capaldi’s Doctor (the 12th Doctor) still has a regeneration left if we’re not counting John Hurt? Because according to a Tom Baker story The Deadly Assassin the Doctor can regenerate only 12 times and have 13 bodies.

Er, no.

‘Paul McGann turns into John Hurt so they’re not the same incarnation,’ said Moff. ‘He used up another regeneration and I’ll expect he’ll be in trouble shortly – you can’t break rules laid down in The Deadly Assassin.’

So John Hurt isn’t a numbered Doctor but he still used up a regeneration. And Peter Capaldi is the last one – unless someone decides to re-write everything all over again.

There you go. Hope that clears things up for you.

Except he does know. He said it himself at the end of 'The Name of the Doctor'. He doesn't call himself that, but he certainly keeps track of his regenerations.

Preview for The Time f the Doctor is up. Wooden Cybamen, Daleks, & Weeping Angels; oh my! Oh & Capaldi will show up at the end. I will miss Matt Smith, he was adorably weird but made bow ties as well as fishsticks & custard cool.

I hope the Silence work. The great thing about them was they were the perfect monster for that storyline, but they don't really make sense outside of that storyline. It would be a crying shame if they are in this Episode and it makes no sense, taking something away from the awesomeness that is The Silence. This sort of happened to the Weeping Angels in The Doctor Takes Manhatten and Russell T Doofus completely killed any Dalek mythos with all his episodes (with the exception of Dalek).

I love Peter Capaldi (I'm Scottish, so I'm bias), I really wish just once I could hear him saying in his best Maclom Tucker; "I'm Doctor ******* Who, ********* What do you ******* want? Twit."

Yeah. I'm getting tired of great one shot villains becoming annoying recurring villains. The Weeping Angels are a perfect example of this. Blink was an amazing episode but the angels are pretty stupid when you see them over and over. They should have just felt well enough alone.

While Statue of Liberty Angel was admittedly lame, creepy children angels were quite creepy & the end of the episode was just about the biggest gut punch new Who has thrown at us.

I get the whole desire to "throw all of 11 (13's) villains at him" for his last episode, though. I agree that the silence may not be the best villains to do that with, though. Unless they're in charge of setting the trap...

I dunno man, each to their own, but if I hear the phrase "fixed point in time," one more time, I'll probably go and kill some puppies.
