Finally was able to see this. Well worth it IMO. And yes, it retcons x3, which is a good thing all the way around. There were a couple of points where you had to strain to suspend disbelief (even for a superhero film), but all in all a very solid film. The best part is that because of the way they did it, they can now basically go back and cherry pick events post 1973 and change the ones they want changed, while leaving the ones that they want to stay the same. It'll be interesting to see how they do this, and what specific changes they decide to make (and hopefully, they'll think about it a bit more and not write themselves into a corner like last time).
Far and away the scene stealer was Quicksilver during the break out. Freaking awesome! It was like "This is cool", "Ok, this is really cool", "Oh hell, that's funny", "No, that's really funny", "Oh, and awesome too!". Then, it's like "wham!" (followed by insane giggling, which apparently was coming from me). Trust me, if you haven't seen the film yet, it's worth the price of admission just for that one scene. It's what you've always wanted to see in a super speed character scene, but has never been done right before. They got it perfect.
Apparently, they cut a *huge* amount of additional scenes and story, mostly about the lead into the dark future portion. I get why they did it. There's just too much story to tell, and it's more important to tell a complete story about events occurring in the past than about the background bits leading to the future. But it does leave the future portions a bit jarring and empty. You're just "there" and there's very very little info about the characters in that time. I expect the directors cut will be well worth getting though and hopefully, they can add in a bunch of stuff that didn't make the theatrical release cut.
All in all, well worth watching IMO. And the set up for Apocalypse looks to be interesting, so there's more to look forward to.
