Not sure this isn't more appropriate in class skills, but here goes...

I'm getting ready to start a new alt, Alliance. I haven't decided on race or class yet, but I want the professions to be blacksmithing and engineering. Any suggestions for a good race and class? I'm also wanting a new, or at lest somewhat different set of early quests. My dungeon and raiding preference is DPS.

If you want the blacksmithing to be most beneficial to that toon, a warrior, paladin or death knight is your best bet. However, since most things are BoE and the extra sockets you can add will benefit any class, it's really up to you. You are really the only person who knows what the "best" race and class for you are.

IMO, we're long past the day when Blizzard will allow a racial to be so compelling that you would choose race based on the power of their gameplay effect. I'd say to choose based on:

- the "flavor" of the racials, voice acting, and emotes
- whether you can stand to look at them for long periods of time
- the lore, if you're interested in that sort of thing

Also, both the draenei and worgen have their own starting area to get you to level 16 or so - and the others have been significantly changed if you leveled up pre-Cataclysm (gnomes in particular).
