DISCLAIMER: Your Steps and Tasks may be different

Per Patch 1.82:
- Meran the Weaver now advises players on step 3 of the Cloak of Shades Part 1 quest to search for Brownie Nomads in Salisbury Plains rather than Camp Forest.

- Players will now be asked to kill more level appropriate monsters for the Cloak of Shades Part 1 quest.

Part 1 and 2

Steps:
1. Talk to the minstrel in Cotswold Village - her name is Laridia the Minstrel (sometimes you can start at step 2)

2. Talk to seamstress in Prydwen Keep - her name is Meran the Weaver and she is located along the back wall. She tells you she needs components for the Cloak of Shades. The components are found on a red adder, and a will o wisp; or a wild boar and a brownie nomad, both found in the plains. Also may ask to kill a black dog.

3.
a. Kill a red adder (glowing snake skin) which are commonly found in Salisbury Plains. My best advice is to hunt for a red adder near West Downs because you will have to take a horse ride to the next step.

b. Kill a will o wisp which is located in Campocertin Forest. A good place to find these mobs is just east of Caer Ulfwych.

c. Wild Boar (Pristine Boars Hide) -- Plains; Brownie Nomad (Sinew) -- Camp Forest or Plains; and Black Dog -- West Downs.

5. After acquiring the components return them to Meran the Weaver in Prydwen Keep - a horse ride is the quickest way. She will send you to see Dyemaster Thrurin. Thrurin wanders the woods along the road that connects Camelot to Ludlow. He can be hard to find sometimes and you need to check both sides of the road. Talk to Thrurin. He also needs components - a container and some dye. The container is found on a Dryad.

6. Kill a Dryad which can be found in the North Black Mountains or Campacorentin Forest. Dryads in the North Black Mountains can be found in the woods surrounding Snowdonia Station. Return the container to Thrurin and he will tell you how he lost the dye to a thief.

6. Kill the red dwarf chief and recover the horn of drinking. He can be found in the valley below the bull carved into the hill. From Ludlow, cross the double bridge and immediately turn east (right). As long as you stay right of the hills and left of the water, you can't miss the dwarves. I avoided everyone and picked off the chief and a matron (yellow and blue to me at 11). Return the horn to Thrurin and he will tell you how he lost the dye to a thief. You may be asked to kill a Gray Warg. Gray Wargs can be found in the north black mountains directly west of snow station at loc 19637, 33996

7. Kill Aldous Wynedd, which is a named bandit found in the South Black Mountains. He is located on top of the hill to the east of Ludlow. The hill seems to be too high to climb but it is not. Aldous hangs out with several other named thief-types and attacking him will draw some attention from the others so be careful or have a group.

8. Return the dye to Thrurin and he will send you after some black rocks from a boulderling.

9. Go kill a boulderling or a Grumoz Demon in Camelot Hills and return to Thrurin.
(another variation someone was given: step 9 kill a black dog in sailsbury plains for patch of fur.)

10. Talk to Meran, give her the components and you will receive the Cloak of Shades.

(There are actually 13 steps to this damn quest. It took me forever and I'm a minstrel! If you want the item as a scout or infiltrator, take a minstrel or theurgist with you for the run buff. The quest will take at least an hour.)

Reward:
  Cloak of Shades

the quest has a direction wrong... Aldous Wynedd isn't EAST of ludlow he's NORTH... the bestiary has that correctly, very frustrating
Nice cloak

Not bad if you're looking for some free gear to add to stealth. Not to mentioned it's dyed dark, which looks kinda cool. Quest is LONG though, very long. The steps to kill unnamed MOBs seem to vary a bit, possibly just randomly.

If you're an inf, and auto-training your stealth, this will help you out a bit, although it's going to take a while as others have mentioned.
Changed or differs by class?

Steps:
1. Talk to the minstrel in Cotswold Village - her name is Laridia the Minstrel (Couldn't skip this one)
2. Talk to seamstress in Prydwen Keep - her name is Meran the Weaver and she is located along the back wall. She tells you she needs components for the Cloak of Shades. The components are found on a wild boar and a brownie nomad, both found in the plains.
3. Kill the Wild Boar (Pristine Boars Hide) -- Plains and Brownie Nomad (Sinew) Salisbury Plains
4. After acquiring the components return them to Meran the Weaver in Prydwen Keep - a horse ride is the quickest way. She will send you to see her husband Dyemaster Thrurin. Thrurin wanders the woods along the road that connects Camelot hills to Black Mountains South. He can be hard to find sometimes and you need to check both sides of the road. Talk to Thrurin. He also needs components - a container, dye and dry powder. He askes for them one at a time though.
5. The container he asks for is a Gray Worg Fang. Gray Wargs can be found in the north black mountains directly west of snow station at loc 19637, 33996. Give the fang to Thrurin and he will tell you how he lost the dye to a thief.
7. Return the dye to Thrurin and he will send you after a patch of black fur from a Black Dog in Salisbury Plains.
8. Go kill a Black dog, return the fur the Thrurin and you will receive a flask of dye.
Return to Prydwen Keep, give the dye to Meran and you will receive the Cloak of Shades.
(Be prepared for a lot of running!)

I got the undead druid and the bloated spider too. The problem I have is they upgraded all the mobs and are still sending L11 & L12 into the forest to get L20 bloated spiders...kinda screwed up!

rare grumoz?
# Aug 17 2002 at 9:06 PM Rating: Default
I had trouble finding a grumoz demon also. Finally one popped up right in front and to the right of the DF portal/entrance. I waited for like an hour one time and I got everything but the grumoz. I tried again and at a different time and he was right there.

BTW the grumoz demon spawned for on the opposite side of the other larger one, with the name starting with an F.

for the last part, I had to kill a Grumoz demon outside of darkness falls and bring back Soot, also when I killed Aldous Wynedd. he was standing next to whom I assume is his wife =P and there was another guy wandering around, blue at 11, and Aldous and his wife were 11, I was able to sneak behind him and pull him while the blue guy was wandering, and got Aldous solo and killed him easily. just a little insight. Also for the Brownie Nomad, I killed one in Salisbury, took about 15 minutes of killing grassrunners before I saw one pop.

Hello all, I have been asked to kill a Brownie Nomad - no big deal right - well, it wants me to do it in Camp. Forest. I have never seen a nomad in Camp. Forest. I ran around like a moron last night for about an hour lookin for one. Will-o-wisp, sprigs, etc - no problem - but no Brownie Nomad. Anyone have a hint or loc???

Just kill the first one you see.. it doesn't matter where they are you still get what you need.
cloak

Mine is about the same as one persons, but different. It's obviously random. I've almost finished it, Black Dogs fur being the last part to get, to make the powder. I'm a lvl 12 Minstrel. Fun quest:D Not that I'll bother wearing the cloak anyway until I start RvR, have a better one on right now from a different quest.

I waited 2 hrs and the dwarf chief didnt show. Is this quest bugged or what??? why put such a long spawn time on him??? I dont pay money to sit there for hours waiting for some pesky dwarf to show up, it sucks BIG time. And yeah I killed everything in that camp 10-20 times over and he still didnt show.

When you are on your way to Ludlow from Camelot Hills look back away from the road - in the woods - pretty close to where the zone is the Black Moutains. That is where I found him at 298, 9452. It took me forever to find him though! I am wishing I never began this quest! It pretty much has sucked so far :(

found him at 144,9509 in camelot hills on the way to ludlow(or from ludlow depending on which direction you are going). other side of ludlow right of road if going via the north camelot entrance, just as you zone into camelot hills from south black mountains.

Actually he roams somewhat, so he does appear on BOTH sides of the road...
Alternate steps
# May 10 2002 at 8:28 AM Rating: Default
This quest has been set up to be very different from all others. There are about 8 different versions that I have now heard.

Mine sent me to Salsbury Plains against an Undead Druid (near West Downs) for cloth and to Camp Forest against a Bloated Spider (near Caer Ulfwich, head NE) for thread.

Thrurin then sent me to kill a Dryad in Black Mountains North (just south along the road from Snowdonia Station) for the container.

After getting the liquid from the named bandit near Ludlow, I was sent to Camelot Hills for some soot from a Grumoz Demon (in the broken tower just north of the bridge. Also known as the entrance to Darkness Falls).

Clearly these steps don't match the ones above. So I asked a pair of my friends that have done this quest and they each got still other orders. It appears that each step is randomly selected, so you may get any combination of these.

I had to kill every dwarf in the red dwarf bandit camp 3 times to make the Red Dwarf Chief appear. Also, don't make the mistake I saw another character make when killing the bandits in the camp. Don't attack the shaman. The Shaman is purple to me at 11th level, and I believe is involved in a 20th level armsman quest.
Black Dogs and Snakes
# Apr 08 2002 at 10:28 AM Rating: Default
To follow up my April 7th post, I am weak minded and simple (or maybe just tenacious)....I did not run away to find another dog. Instead, I came to this web sight and discovered that they are here somewhere.
Turns out it is a night time thing. After 21:00 hours (/time) they can be found in the rings. I found mine just south over the hill from West Downs in a Fidith Ring (sp). From all the "sightings" I was gettin earlier when I was askin around, I would guess these Black Dogs appear at most of the rings and mounds at night. Suggest when yer out gettin the Red Alder Snake (found mine just north of West Downs) that ye stick around in the evening fer the dog (need the patch o black fur). Was Yellow to me just before me 13th birthday, but it fell quickly and did not bring along any friends. Ye can easisly run back to the West Downs if ye get ganged up on. Have not put all the pieces together, so I don't know if it were werth it all, but this info would have saved me about three hours (I admit that I am a bit slow to be startin wit) Good Luck.
RE: Black Dogs and Snakes

K. The Black Dogs spawn in a cpl locations. They spawn at Night across from West Downs at the Druid ring there. Another spot is the Closest Tombraider Camp to Camelot (the one by the slavers). The ones at the Tombraider camps usually only spawn during the day.
