Barnarn the crier says, "Rumor has it that a giant wolf has attacked a patrol at a remote post in the southern black mountains."

Talk to the named guard at the tower west of Vetusta Abbey (in the same valley where you can find the dwarfs for a quest in Humberton). He tells you about Throatripper.

Lieutenant Jursen says, "Hail! Ever heard of [throatripper]?" (South Black Mountains - 5963,59063,1024)

Lieutenant Jursen says, "Yeah, an [angry wolf] who has taken up living in these woods."

Lieutennat Jursen says, "Well it attacked one of our patrols and was wounded. Ever since then the damn beast just howls all night and [attacks anything] that comes near it."

Lieutenant Jursen says, "I would have taked care of it myself, but I cannot leave my post. Will you [kill it]? I will reward you!"

Dialog box: Do you accept the Ripper quest?

You have been given the Ripper quest.

Lieutenant Jursen says, "Thank you! I might actually get some sleep tonight."

[Step #1]Find and slay Throatripper. (South Black Mountains - 9014,56520,0788)

If you kill the wolf that spawns near the edge of the forest between the cutpurse and dwarf camps right at the base of the hill, Throatripper will spawn at loc=6558, 52669 and come running at you, but will run off when you turn around and you will have to chase him down and kill him. He is yellow to level 5. He drops a Ripper pelt.

[Step #2]Return to Lieutenant Jursen for your reward.

Lieutenant Jursen says, "Wow! You did it! As promised, here is your reward. You should take that pelt into Ludlow and talk to [Marie]. It might be more valuable than you think!"

Lieutenant Jursen says, "She is a Seamstress in Ludlow."

[Step #3]Travel to Ludlow and show Seamstress Marie the ripper pelt. (South Black Mountains - 46305,44524,2217)

Seamstress Marie says, "Hello, you appear to need my [services]."

Seamstress Marie says, "Well I can do most any leatherwork you may require. Do you have a [pelt] that you wish me to examine?"

Seamstress Marie says, "I assume you required my leatherworking skills do you not? Let me see it!"

You give Seamstress Marie the Ripper pelt.

Seamstress Marie says, "Ah! A fine pelt indeed! I will fashion this a jerkin but you will need to obtain another item so that I can sew it properly. Seek out a large skeleon and from it bring me a piece of polished bone."

You can find large skeletons at various places near Costwold and Prydwen Keep. (Camelot Hills - 45106,49934,2677) Kill them until you get the polished bone, then return to Ludlow.

4. Give Marie the polished bone, and she will reward you with the Ripper Jerkin (LEATHER)

Reward:
  Ripper Jerkin

Seamstress Marie was displaced by the dragon attack on Ludlow. She is in the "refugee" tents at 55K 58.5K. Why won't Broadsword let her go home???
remains?

Wound up with something called "Throatripper's remains" that I can't sell and no one will take.) Any idea what these are for?

I just found these things and ,doh!, forgot that skellies spawn at night! Very easy jaunt north of Prydwen Keep on a small hillock with the afore-mentioned obelisk.

Just wish I had posted here much earlier. At level 7, the jerkin is blue and not any better than the armor I already had. sigh.

Finding large skellies
# Oct 03 2002 at 1:12 PM Rating: Decent
OK, the Throatripper part of this quest was easy. But finding large skeletons is not. I found ONE near the graveyard in Camelot Hills. Killed him, waited around, but no more spawned.

I searched the bestiary maps and only saw "large" skellies in Camelot Hills.

Does anyone know where to find groups of these critters? I'd like to get my jerkin made before it goes out of style!

Many Thanks!

Look near the hills that have tall dark-grey "oblisks" on them. There should be various undead around each of these, and closest should be the tall, red Large Skeletons. The area you want is near the main road, close to Prydwen Keep. They spawn day and night.
Took 2 Wolves to get him to spawn right behind me.
# Sep 15 2002 at 6:14 PM Rating: Decent
Got him with my lvl7 Highlander Merc. He was also nice enough to drop tattered Wolf Hide Leggings AF:10, Absorb:10% wt.:1.5 took about 2 minutes to spawn 2 minutes to kill....

Guess I was real lucky
good one

Easy breezy quest at Level 7.

as a Sorc i had no use for it, but traded it for an +int item with some player in camelot. Good hunting spot to as a sorc... replenishable source for slaves... har har
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 31 2002 at 2:29 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This quest sucks! I am a Theurgist, and after wasting a lot of time to complete the quest, I get a damn Leather Jerkin that I can't even use! Someone screwed up here.

Throatriper always pops in the same place, which is close to the center of the valley, closer to the tower side than the poacher camp side.
Where he pops, however, is irrelevant. He is TRIGGERED(thats right, they arent placeholders) when you kill a black wolf at night(doesnt work every time, but at least half the time, so long as you have the quest in your journal), and he will run straight for you every time, as long as nobody else attacks him on his way.

Did this one at about Level 7 or 8. I had to hunt for quite a while to find Throatripper, though. I ended up finding him between the poachers' camp and the place where the dwarves hang out in that patch of woods. I had no problems getting the pelt the first time, but I did it solo. You end up getting a Ripper Jerkin out of the deal, which is pretty good leather armor up till about Level 10 or so.

I was grouped with a friend a level below me. We found and killed Throatripper. My friend got pelt but I didn't. My quest however, advanced to taking pelt to Marie. Now I can't get pelt from Throatripper or complete quest :(

# Feb 16 2002 at 7:10 PM Rating: Default
Same thing happened to me. I've killed Throatripper perhaps a dozen times and no pelt. Quest journal and NPCs think I have the pelt. This bug or whatever it is has kept new quests from appearing in the journal.
RE: Throatripper
# Feb 10 2002 at 3:26 PM Rating: Default
I absolutely hate this quest! I spent all night looking for Throatripper after receiving the quest, and when I finally found and killed him, I did not get the ripper pelt. And of course the quest proceeded on to the next step of taking the pelt to Marie. But not having the pelt, I am now stuck! There is nothing worse than a broken quest and I'm going to complain to Myhtic about this one. Hopefully it is a bug,
Polished Bone

I thought monsters didn't drop loot when they con grey. Well, large skeletons con grey to me, so am I gonna be able to get a polished bone?
RE: Polished Bone
# Feb 07 2002 at 7:33 AM Rating: Default
Even if gray con, a critter will give the quest item if you have the quest. They just don't do any normal drops. :)

I started this quest at 13 (yeah, I know too easy)
I killed the doggy in a crit shot but no pelt, should I go and just keep triggering him until I get it?

Why not? You could trade it for +int item or something.
Most annoying thing about this quest
# Jan 24 2002 at 6:25 PM Rating: Decent
The biggest problem I have with this quest is getting to him before people 5lvls above my character do.
not for Cloth wearers
# Jan 14 2002 at 12:21 AM Rating: Default
Wasn't aware til I finished the quest - a bit time consuming and a complete WASTE!!! of time if you wear cloth armor - very disappointing :(
Level Max? Don't see one.
# Nov 29 2001 at 2:31 PM Rating: Default

Hmm Interesting. I stumbled upon this quest as a level 12 infl, and was able to get it. Guess the max level is at what level it is a benefit to you... not a max level that they will offer it to you...
Polished Bone

The worst part of this quest by far was the polished bone section. Took me 16 Large Skellys to get that stupid thing... My very next quest came from Eowlen in Cotswold. Talk about frustrating... I had to get yet again another bone! I still have bruises on my forehead from slamming it repeatedly into the monitor. <laughs> For some reason it only took two skellys to get that one. Go figure.

Spawn Area
# Nov 20 2001 at 8:06 AM Rating: Good
1) The Spawn area seems to always be behind you.
2) Killing wolfs does trigger ThroatRipper to spawn.
3) I've done this on 5 characters and the results are consistant.
RE: Spawn Area
# Nov 20 2001 at 10:08 PM Rating: Default
I have had him spawn right in front of me while running to a place where I was fairly certain I knew he'd spawn (seen him spawn there before). He did do this weird pathing thing where he couldn't hit me right after he spawned until he ran to a certain spot, and after he hit that mark he came right to me (which i should hope he would, I did cast a nuke on him after all)

Triggering This Quest
# Nov 14 2001 at 3:53 PM Rating: Default
I did the Traveler's Way quest with dwarves, and then stuck around there for additional exp. I once had to run back to the guard for safety, and mistakenly right clicked him. That seemed to have some how triggered this quest. This is probably not very scientific way, but that's how I got this quest, by sheer accident :)

I tried talking to Lt. Jursen and he didn't give me the quest. All he said is he heard a tale about some beast but won't say anything till he gets more proof. How do I get the quest?

I patrolled the forest between the dwarves and the cutpurse camp. Throatripper spawned shortly after midnight game /time.
RE: Oldive
# Nov 13 2001 at 12:39 AM Rating: Good
Yes, the key here is that Throatripper spawns between the dwarf and poacher camps in that valley. Some earlier posts indicated the spawn point was all the way at the very north end of the valley and that is incorrect. I and several others wasted whole evenings jogging around on the elevated bench at the very north end of the valley without ever seeing throatripper. He is down below between those camps.

I completed this quest at lvl 10 because it was holding me back from completing the Heart of Sepucoth Quest (both require a polished bone, more explanation under that quest).
RE: Oldive
# Nov 05 2001 at 2:52 AM Rating: Decent
I'v done the quest seveal times, and Throatripper never spawned before 10 pm game time.

Just did the quest as my Level 7 Merc. He spawned around 11:00pm game time while my partners (group formed by going "you doing Ripper?" "yea" "Lets group" "ok") and I were discussing whether we had to kill his placekeepers or not. Guess not, our party was the only group in the area and our Theurgist's earth pet spanked him before I even knew he had spawned.

I really like this quest system, no reason for people to F each other over. Just group and everyone wins quick.

I shared your experience about the spawn time, nutil today, when Throatripper spawned at 8.57 pm (ingame time..)

U really need to kill some wolf around the area at night. Otherwise it won't show up
He's behind you
# Oct 18 2001 at 5:42 PM Rating: Default
It turns out I was off killing black wolves to make throatripper spawn. About 5 wolves in, I turn around and see a very high level character killing him. Dang!

Well, I send a nice tell asking him if he would mind if I attempted Throatripper the next time he spawns. Turns out he thought I was in trouble because throatripper was chasing me around, and I didn't even notice.

Next time he spawned he chased me too. So if you can't find him, look behind you :)
