DISCLAIMER: Your Steps and Tasks may be different

Per Patch 1.37:
Quest: Fortune of Few. Armsmen were receiving a Embossed Crossbow reward for this level 11 quest. For those Armsmen who wish to receive a usable item for their level, please return to Master Graent. You can hand him the Embossed Crossbow and you will receive a Belt of Battle in exchange.

Per patch 1.71:
- Fortune of Few - Master Graent will once again accept crafted war mattocks in addition to the store bought ones.

Characters that were created after Patch Version 1.79 do not receive this Epic quest.

You speak to your trainer and he states that Master Graent is planning on running some training classes, but unfortunately his shipment of weapons that he needed for this did not arrive and he is desparate for weapons to train his students with. If you agree to help him with this, he gives you slightly more than 11 silver to go buy 5 bronze war mauls and take the Master Graent. The amount he gives you equals the cost of the war mauls. Click the item picture, not the name. These are considered Large Weapons, and Ethan Farley in Camelot sells them (hut in the middle of hut # 55 ( map in Official Strategy Guide) with the blue and white striped roof ( right in front of you as you pass by the Old folks named Pritchard ( they used to OR still give free /level armor) Purchase these and take to Master Graent

After you do this, he states that you are trustworthy and, since he is now not going to have to cancel his classes today, he needs your help again. He needs you to run to the bridge by Salisbury Plains (southeast of Prydwen Keep) and take a food shipment to Sergeant Grum, because he has not received his shipment. He can be found south of the bridge patrolling the area, and doesn't stop long to be disturbed. You give him the food shipment and he thanks you and tells you to return to Master Graent.

When you return to your trainer he again praises your trustworthiness
and, as a token of gratitude, gives you a reward.

Official hint (from Camelot Herald):
  • Players getting the message "Item number not listed" when trying to buy bronze war mattocks need to pick up the mattock icon so it’s on the cursor and then click buy instead of just highlighting the item and clicking buy.

  • Rewards:
    Ring of Clarity -- Friar
    Embossed Crossbow -- Armsman
    Bracer of Deftness -- Scout
    Minor Elemental Insight -- Theurgist
    Belt of Battle

    Master Graent has disappeared

Since all the recent new patches and updates there have been a lot of changes in Prydwen Keep. One of these changes is that the Fighter Trainer has disappeared and you now begin training in Cotswald instead. However, the fighter trainer was Master Graent so it now appears impossible to complete this quest! I'm stuck with a backpack full of mattocks and no-one to give them to.

    Master Graent has now re-appeared.
He has changed from Fighter Trainer to a merchant and is found along the left hand side of the keep wall after you enter Prydwen.
It seems strange to have a merchant talk about having trouble finding time to train people... but at least the quest is finishable again.
    Where to find Mattocks
    # Aug 31 2004 at 12:42 AM Rating: Decent
I've been away from DAoC for quite some time, and now that I've come back one drastic change I noticed was that pretty much all of the regular merchants I used to know (esp the tailoring merchants) had been compressed down into fewer merchants with "pages" of inventory.

As of August 31st, 2004, you can find Bronze War Mattocks on Rayn Olwyc in Cotswald, as the first item on page 4 of his inventory.

I've had difficulty finding many merchant sold items simply because I'd forgotten to check and see if a merchant had more than 1 page of inventory, so hopefully I can save others from making the same mistake.
    Mattocks
    # Jul 14 2004 at 12:10 AM Rating: Decent
I made the mattocks myself after going to all 4 vendors that supposedly sold them. Graent won't accept them. And the pouch of money given at the beginning, I couldn't sell, but is gone now. Can I get some suggesions, please?

Master Graent is the Fighter Trainer in Prydwen Keep. Just hand the weapons to him after he you speak to him. Sergeant Grum now stands by the bridge southeast of Prydwen Keep (he no longer patrols the road south with the two other named guards). I believe they changed that a few patches ago. Although I did this quest back when he did walk the road, I was lucky enough to catch him when he was near the bridge. Hope this helps answer most of the questions I see here :)

When I did this quest with my armsman I got a belt of battle instead of a crossbow.
    RE: different item
    # Apr 18 2002 at 12:41 AM Rating: Decent
I also got the belt instead of the crossbow. An armsmen cannot use crossbow till 15 so it is probably a mistake.

    Hi @ all!

I have not been able to find the starting NPC for this quest for the Armsmen. Some places say Prahlion (Adribards retreat), and my trainer does not give this quest. Any ideas?

"Bedamor Routh" is the merchant, stands in the little open building with the other armor & weapon merchants in Cotswold.

Sergeant Grum stands at the Salisbury Plains side of the bridge by Prydwen Keep, and is a stationary guard.

Has a Cleric done this quest? What do they get? Where Do I find my guild master in Camelot? Thanks for the help.

i would say not all the people who have done this quest are of the defenders guild it their 11th lvl quest. your trainer not guild master is how it should be stated.

I did this quest w/ my lv11 armsman. I didn't get the crossbow, but the belt of battle instead. It's a lv12 magic item +4 Str +3% slashing resist. Might be a little off on the stats.

Theurgists get a Minor Elemental Insight Braclet. Level 12 item (power +1 and Int +3). Good item for such an easy quest.

    # Nov 26 2001 at 4:14 PM Rating: Default
Fellow Armsman, may as well do it, don't think you can start your epic at 15th until you finish this one. Crossbow sucks, by 16th it's green, but all we use them for is pulling anyway, good enough for that.
    Crossbow
    # Nov 21 2001 at 5:51 PM Rating: Default
I am a Frair, and I liked the reward I got. I think the Armsman gets kinda ripped off on this quest though. If Mythic made this crossbow useable before 15 by the armsman it would make it an awsome item for them.

Okay, anyone have any pointers on where the armsman trainer is near Adribard's Retreat? I looked for a solid hour and can't find him.
    Umm...how do scout get it?

How do scout get these quest? My trainer dont really give me it. He just keep asking if I want a quiver of arrows...

The bridge is southeast of Prydwen Keep, there is a binding stone there.

    # Nov 10 2001 at 1:16 AM Rating: Default
I got this quest from the Armsman trainer outside of Adribards Retreat. I went to purchase the 5 bronze war mattocks and the two vendors I went to wouldnt let me buy them. Im a 12th Theurgist and it prompted me with the "are you sure you wish to buy this?" I pressed accept and it then said, this Item is not listed. Or something like that, Im guessing this is a bug. I wish I could finish this quest
    RE: Willum
    # Nov 10 2001 at 8:59 PM Rating: Decent
I just had the same problem. If you click on the item name, and then click buy it will tell you you the item number is not on the list and you wont buy it. If you click the icon by the name in the store window and then, with the icon on your cursor, click buy you can buy it just fine.
    theurgist got quest
    # Nov 05 2001 at 4:02 AM Rating: Default
I got this quest with my 11 theurgist from my trainer.
Got basically the same item as the 6th trainer quest, except that it was a ring instead of a cap.

    +3 int, +1 power
