DISCLAIMER: Your Steps and Tasks may be different

You get this at level 4 from your trainer. You may have to do the mild deception quest first.

Speak to Ula, Stalker Trainer of Mag Mell, or perhaps directly to Damhnait, Stalker Trainer of Howth, and you will be instructed to locate a certain tracker, follow her, and determine from whom she is receiving information. Once you discover the person, you are to bribe them into telling you. You are given a jewel to use as a bribe.

The Tracker is an Elven woman in blue armor, who wanders across the hills due West of Howth. The easiest way to locate her, if you have patience, is to wait near Merle the Old, who resides on the ridge immediately West of Howth. I waited around fifteen minutes before she wandered up, but the wait could potentially be much longer. Before she reaches Merle (the culprit), right-click her. She will tell you that it is none of your business where she goes -- she doesn't seem to mind you following, though. Once she reaches Merle, right-click Merle and follow the prompt for more information. When he asks you for compensation, drop the jewel on him. He informs you that Blaiseach (previously referred to in the
Mild Deception quest) is worried that the Unnamed One is close to finding the Moonstone.

Return to Damhnait, who will tell you to pass the info on to Leachlainn, the Nightshade Trainer in Ardagh. Damhnait gives you the exact phrase to use. Travel to Ardagh, right-click Leachlainn, and follow the prompt to give him more info. Then, while he is selected, say something to the effect of "The unnamed one is close to finding the moonstone".

Leachlainn says that is interesting, and gives you the Ring of Masked Faces and mentions that, should you choose the path of Nightshade, he would be happy to have you.

Rewards:
  Ring of Masked Faces
  Ring of Faces

problems with track and sneek quest
# Feb 06 2002 at 8:24 AM Rating: Default
I am at the last stage of this quest, all I have to do is tell Leachlainn about the moonstone. However, I can't. The option never comes up. I went back and saw Damhnait, but she doesn't give me anything to say, I am really close to yanking my hair out, I even went to Ula...nada, zip zilch. It only tells me she is friendly and trains night shades, and gives the option to level my stats up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...maybe I should just start over..hell hes only level 4

you have to physically type "/say the unnamed one is close to finding the moonstone" while he's selected. It never comes up as an option when he's speaking to you.
Elven Tracker
# Feb 03 2002 at 10:26 PM Rating: Default
I've done this quest twice so far, and both times, it has been the tracker in *blue* that must be followed. If you are confused there is an easy way to tell which one you should talk to. Left-clicking on the one in blue brings up the message "She is friendly". However, left-clicking on the one in red says "She is friendly and is a guard". We may infer then that the one in red is there acting as a sentinel, and the blue elf is the one you must talk to.

As a side note, the tracker seems to spawn after sunset, so it would behoove questers to keep themselves busy until then instead of waiting around the whole day (as I did).
no jewel

That tracker...
# Jan 04 2002 at 11:21 AM Rating: Default
She always arrives near the other tracker exactly at noon...maybe at midnight as well (waiting 24 hours IS a little tough for a lvl 4, 12 would make more sense), but I haven't tested that yet. Oh, and if you follow the tracker instead of 'cheating' and going directly to Merle, watch out...she walks through a rather dangerous area, full of nasty violet-conning aggressive mobs that seem to have absolutely no problem seeing through stealth...in other words, you have been warned.
RE: That tracker...
# Jul 07 2004 at 7:04 AM Rating: Decent
I waited for the tracker at noon but she never arrived, so I hung around until sunset (roughly 5pm) and she turned up. When I right clicked on her she told me that where she went was none of her business. I put her on stick and auto-followed her for ages until we got to Old Merle. I didn't encounter any aggressive mobs on the way, although she did go through an area with old trees that I have seen populated with aggro mobs during the day, or maybe the above poster was just unlucky and aggro mobs spawned in one of the areas they went through. I followed all the other instructions and got the ring. It's a pretty cool quest, and simple, just time consuming :)

Just finished this quest
# Nov 18 2001 at 6:08 AM Rating: Default
I just completed this quest. There are two trackers outside Ardaugh. One is wearing blue the other is wearing red. You want to wait for the one in red as the elf in blue just stands there. The one in red will meet up to the tracker in blue so be patient.

You need not go to anyone else after speaking to Merle "the old" than leachlainn. Nowhere does the quest even tell you to go back to Damhnait. Even if you did he tells you nothing. Just simply after speaking with Merle go find Leachlainn.

The quest reward was a ring bearing +2 dex and no hp bonus and NO experience reward. (For me anyway)

Alas, the ring was nerfed a patch or two ago. It's just +2 dex now. The extra 3 HP were too unbalancing. ;-)

# Jan 05 2002 at 8:56 AM Rating: Default
Oh yeah, I bet. 3 hits on a ring is going to topple the balance of the game! LOOK OUT!

Like you could finish it in 40 min & you'd need to remake another character to wear 2 of them. 6 HIT POINTS! How would we EVER kill that stakler? *boo hoo*

I imagine it was not nerfed because it would topple the balance of the game, but rather because it didn't fit the scale. Items at 10th level and even above still only add 2-3 points to any one attribute, so it was just out of place at this level.
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 05 2002 at 7:06 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Umm.. not fit the scale? God some people are idiots... they took off the 3 HITS you ******... hits are not = in value to attributes. +3 str is much more valuable than +3 hits... other realms have a ring that is +4 hits at lvl 3. another example of someone who has absolutely NO idea what the hell they are talking about, but loves to see something they wrote posted somewhere.

I hope you are banned from posting if that is possible. You're entire post above was argumentative and a waste of time. Sadly I am lowering myself to your level, but I am sick of these insulting, useless posts. If you can't make a valuable comment, don't. Oh and don't be a coward and post Anon...

Your ring needs to be repaired. Take it to a smith and he will repair it for a price. If you notice that any of your items stop giving the stat bonuses they need to be repaired.

RE: can i do this

I've created three stalkers. In two cases, I completed Mild Deception before level five; in the third, I did not. The first two received this quest; the third did not.

From this, I'm guessing not. After level five, you can no longer interact w/ the Stalker Trainer, so it doesn't seem possible to initiate the quest.

I submitted the info on this quest, so I'll take the knock for any typos. Didn't know they'd copy it verbatim.

Anyhow, I should have mentioned that I, also, was told by Ula, in Mag Mel, to speak w/ Damhnait, in Howth. So, I would say your guess about any Stalker Trainer redirecting you to Damhnait would be correct.

As far as completing this after you have risen... I'm not sure. Supposedly, there are no level limits to completing, but this might be a special case. Make sure you have Leachlainn selected, at the time.

As far as getting the jewel back, I don't think this is possible. I once screwed up the Please Deliver! quest by accidentally deleting the letter... haven't found a way to reset it, so I suppose I'm doomed to have that quest sitting in my list forever. The only possibility that comes to mind would be having a temp char start the quest, then hand you the letter; this may not work, though, as the item may be keyed to the original recipient. Not sure, haven't tried it. Lemme know if it works, though...

This is how it went for me, YMMV:

You don't actually start the quest until you talk to Damhnait in Howth. Once I was level 4, both the Stalker Trainer in Ardee and the one in Mag Mell told me that Damhnait had something for me to do though, so probably every Stalker Trainer will direct you to this quest while you are eligible.

If you go wait near Merle the Old, you don't have to catch the tracker and talk to her before she talks to Merle, just talk to her before you talk to Merle.

After you talk to Merle, your journal tells you to report to Leachlainn, and the phrase to /say to him is in brackets like this: [the unnamed one is close]. You don't have to go back to Damhnain first, you can go straight to Leachlainn with the news.
Level Restriction?
# Oct 16 2001 at 3:45 PM Rating: Default
Well, I took the path of focus, so now I'm a level 5 ranger. Can I still get this quest? Would hate to be cut out of any follow on quests since I missed this one.
RE: Level Restriction?
# Oct 16 2001 at 4:33 PM Rating: Good
I'd say you're probably unable to do it, though I'd go talk to the Stalker trainer just in case.

The good thing about quests is that there are no time/level limits AFTER you accept them, so accept every quest you get offered, and then do it at your convenience. Not really helpful after the fact, but good for future reference :)
RE: Level Restriction?
# Jan 07 2002 at 2:09 PM Rating: Default
Started this quest at level 4. Levelled to 5 and spoke to a Ranger trainer and joined the Path of Focus before performing the quest.

I had no difficulty completing the quest even after becoming a Ranger. When I gave the jewel to Merle, my Quest Journal updated with instructions to go straight to Leachlainn (who is in Ardagh).

Regarding trailing the Tracker, if you start at Ardagh, you can keep pace with her walking speed if you are "running" in hidden mode. Make sure to not pass in front of any nasty critters on the way - circle behind them and they are much less likely to uncover you. I maintained a hidden state from the Ardagh hillside all the way to Merle's hut. After the Tracker left, I walked around from behind the hut and Merle uncovered me instantly, giving me a bad moment.

I started this quest at level four, and now that I've chosen my path as a Ranger I can't complete it. I get as far as handing in the jewel with no problems, but when I say "the unamed one is close" to Leachlainn nothing happens....

Any ideas?
RE: Level Restriction?
# Oct 23 2001 at 6:07 PM Rating: Default
If you typed it just like you did on this post I think I know what you did wrong. You spelled "unnamed" wrong, there are 2 n's . Small mistake, but one that will not trigger the NPC to reward you. I just finished this yesterday and the ring is a nice little bonus at low levels.

I lost, destroyed or sold the jewel. i'm not exactly ure what happened, but I no longer have it. Is there any way for me to get it back? I tried restarting the quest, but I was unable to do so. Any info is appreciated.

I have yet to see a quest that can be repeated. You can always start another toon and have him do the quest if you want the item that bad.
