im pole/crush

I dunno with all the spellcraft/alchemy if it really matters what ya think whereas thrust doing more damage to chain,.....etc., etc. I use pole/crush because most of the upper lvling is against skellies, trees(witherwoods), and other PvE which gives bonus to crush damage. If I'm a
Mid wearin chain, knowin I'm weak against thrust, I'm gonna have thrust resist put into my crafted armor. Same with slash, if I'm an enemy wearin lower than chain. So the bonus gets nullified anyway with resists as far as RvR goes. Thx to the lvl 40 respec, and double respecs several months ago, I was able to check them out pretty
well. Crush did very well indeed, in both pve and pvp. I'll take the lvling route with crush, and as far as RvR, SC armor changes all the rest, ya dont know really how the enemy is spec'd. As for plate being susceptable to crush? Huh, not with my SC'd armor its not! :)

hm.. a polearm... what should i choose? saracen or highlander..?? and why??

i would like a char with a lot of HP, so, i believe it's constitution where i have to put points in, and maybee a little str...

could use some help though.. :)

# Aug 15 2002 at 6:08 AM Rating: Default
Picking a Saracen as an Armsman will hurt you at lower levels, mainly because they have low Strength and Constitution. The gear Armsmen have to wear and use to fight with is pretty dang heavy, so you'll more or less be taking trips to the merchant to sell items more often than the Highlander race, not to mention being beat down harder.

However, the payoff on becoming a Saracen Armsman is that with your naturally high Dexterity, you will be able to block with your shield and parry more often than a Highlander.

A Highlander is about the exact opposite of what I have mentioned above - they do great during the lower levels with their naturally high Con and Str, but tend to be "so-so" from level 35+ on since they have a lower Dexterity.

No matter which race you choose to be, all of them have the potential to be good at what they do, so all it comes down to is really just cosmetic issues. :)

Pick a class, and enjoy the game :)

But a lot of ppl told me that pole is best than 2H, is it true? If it is should I spec Pole Slash, Thrust or Crush? And if its 2handed should I spec in Slash, Thrust or Crush?? RE: polearms...
# Jul 16 2002 at 5:37 AM Rating: Default
Yes you should.

In Albion a characters maximum damage with a Polearm or a 2H weapon is determined by your skill with that weapon, and your minimum damage is determined by your skill in the related one-handed weapon skill (IE: slash/crush/thrust). Albion is the ONLY realm that does damage in this method.

# Apr 19 2002 at 12:09 PM Rating: Default
Dont u guys think defenders revenge (44)skill is kinda waste skill for polearm since u will almost never get a chance to use it. because u have to perform defenders rage (34) use after target fumbles. But how often u will see or notice target fumble especially in rvr. my opinion its kinda BS skill. Basically for polearmer u will use cripling blow, disabler and mangle for levelin and rvr.
RE: Useless Polearm skill

Yes this is true, BUT by having 44 skill points into Polearm you will still be doing the damage cap for that level of specialization, so it isn't a total waste.

Lots of interesting questions and answers. Thanks for the info guys. I havn't really "research" and collect data on DPS difference b/t polearm and secondary skill, but here's a thought.

Short Battle - you may get about 10 seconds before the mob dies (hypothetical) with 5.0 (hypothetical) speed hitting for 80 you'll get 3x80 = 240 damage in. let's say you have a fast weapon that hits for 45 every 2.5 seconds. you'll get 5x45=225 damage in. In this case the ratio is actually higher for one hander.

Long Battle - well DUH, given the weapons percentage of hits are the same, the 45 every 2.5 should come out ahead.

Ofcourse IMHO if you're the tank, you should use faster weapon to taunt asap so your nuker and healer can goto work. The shield also helps add defense. I've been using shield/1H for tank and polearm when I don't tank.

Whatever the real result maybe, I still like using polearm for solo so I can see myself hitting xxx and critical xxx damages. 2 of those and most low yellows drop =)

***disclaimer**** this isjust my opinion based on my experience with polearmsman. now let's see if I can get 2 more levels today(not)

RE: hm..
# Aug 30 2002 at 11:11 AM Rating: Default
well here a reply then, from someone else =P

personally I prefer to use a Thrusting Polearm, because thrusting is primarily an RvR spec, very good against Chain armour (Middies! =))

For thrust polearmsmen, I would suggest using a Briton as thrust damage is determined 50% by Strength and 50% by Dexterity.

When i assigned my points in the creation of my Briton Polearmsman I put Strength and Dexterity up by 10 and so that i wouldn't waste points (as you do if u raise any ability above 10; i.e 1 point is exausted every time u raise an ability by 1 until it has risen more than 10 points at which point it takes 2 points to raise it a further 1) I then used my remaining 10 points on Constitution.

I found that once u get Polearms up to level 18 ur Armsman really starts to hit hard (Crippling Blow) and by lvl 25 and above he will REALLy start to show his strength

Well their just my views guys, hope they help u make a decision

Warning about crushing weapons tho, probably good choice for middies but not for albions as in RvR only Albions can wear plate

Actually on my server Gawaine, Albion holds all 6 of the relics, and 2 of 3 of the lower lvl BG's MKs. I have to give it to midgards though, they leveled up faster, and have held the most RP since the game came out practically. Each week now though, Albion is the RP leader, shouldn't be too long till we surpass them ;)

In your Opinion with kind of secondary skill is best suited for polearms (Slash,Crush,Thrust)
Please have at least a Armsman that is level 28 or more, cause then you will know for sure what is the best for RvR.

RE: best sec. skill
# Mar 12 2002 at 12:00 PM Rating: Decent
For RvR thrusting is best....I wouldn't say it is a huge difference, but thrusting has a + for chain wearing classes, as well as leather, and cloth. I personally use slash/polearm, but that's because i wasn't thinking when i started him...too late to change it now though. Don't get me wrong i still do terrific damage, but i don't get that little bonus against chain classes....pesky dwarf clerics etc...

My plan is to get
slash to 45
shield to 42
polearm to 45
leftovers in parry

Asking why do shield and polearm? Shield is great for RvR against archers, as well as trying to stun a fleeing enemy so that you can beat them down some more. There is a horrible problem with RvR if you are an armsman though....you have to have a pocket cleric sit there and follow you around healing you. Since we have to get in there to do anything, you are usually one of the first in, and main target...which in turn means you will get hit alot. What i personally like to do because of this is flank the enemy, and blind side them....usually able to take out 3-6 casters or archers sitting in the back, before i go down with no heals. A nice suicide run if you ask me, but then again it helps to get a little attention to that side, so the main force can steam roll them.

I have put my armsman to the side in RvR, and now focusing on my friar(got sick of not being healed heh) IMO my friar does much better in RvR, not just because he can heal, but i honestly think overall i can do more damage with my friar.....i know it sounds strange, but with his haste you would be surprised. I can hit a yellow con enemy with my friar for 200 or so, and faster than my armsman. I can hit a yellow con with my armsman for 200-300, but a weee bit slower...also end is a problem in large fights. With my friar i can get Endurance back super fast. Which helps me for those that are running away, just /stick and sprint while doing moves....hehe i get alot of kills that way which i would have missed with my armsman.

Well hope this helps a bit.

The base skill you spec in (ie. Crushing, Thrusting, Slashing) doesnt matter since the Polearm simply uses the highest. The type does matter though. No offense but Thrust Polearms stike me as sucking VERRRY badly - they seem to hit for 1/4 to 1/2 what a decent slashing/crushing Polearm does but only slightly quicker. Prehaps they work better for Sarcen Armsmen (with higher DEX) but for my Briton they are truly weak.

Personally, I think Polearm/Slash is the overall best option for me. But we all have our oppinions, don't we. I'm not saying it's the best combo period. Too many factors go into this eqasion for there to be any ONE best combo. But the REASON I like Pole/Slash best is that slash is a good all around style. It may not be fastest, but it's not the slowest either. I does good damage. May not get the bonus vs. chain like thrust, but does better damage over all. Slash if very good for PvE. And it don't suck for RvR. It's a balance that will server well enough in most situations.

OK, i re-read your post, and i think ONE of your problems with thrusting polearm is your actual weapon. check the DPS, and find a type of thrusting polearm that compares to the higher end slashing polearm. They do exist, there are some nasty thrusting polearms out there...in fact i would go as far as to say i have seen more thrust poles drop than slash poles...i know because i can't ever use the thrusting polearms since i am focused on slash ;)

The other problem would have to be that your skills are mixed...it seems you have a few points in slash, thrust, and crush. You really need to concentrate on one secondary skill type. pick one and stick with it.....keep one of those skills maxed and only use that type of polearm weapon. Thrusting is great against chain wearers...which is a good majority of the real pains you are fighting in rvr. There are few plate you have to worry about so crush is out, slash is good against leather and cloth wearers but they have fewer hit points anyway, so you should be able to take them out in 1 to 3 hits anyways....it's the chain wearers you have to watch, and that's why i would suggest thrusting. YOU WILL HIT AS HARD WITH THRUSTING(just have to get the right weapon is all) and you are right in some cases thrusting is less damage but faster maybe same DPS though. However there are slower more damaging thrusting polearms. k?

Let me see if I can help clear this up a little bit. Whichever weapon type you choose with your polearm you need to try and keep it close to max, if you want to get the most damage out of your polearm. Thrusting polearm does not mean you use the thrusting skill per say. It means you are using a thrusting type of polearm, and your skill in thrust is figured into the damage variance or your thrusting polearm. Dexterity in no way effects thrusting polearm like it does thrust.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by saying that your polearm uses the highest(crush/thrust/slash), your polearm is either a thrust a crush, or a slash polearm. another thing is if you are using your thrusting polearm, and your thrust is half your max lvl you will see a very big difference.

My opinion, from my experience with polearms, and from what i have researched...is that the damage output for a polearm will be the same for crush, slash, and thrust against creatures that have the same imunities to thrust crush and slash(assuming skills and weapons are same lvl)......ALSO you have to remember that your damage is figured by your...well lets say secondary skill...slash/thrust/crush....
to get the best damage out of your polearm, you need to make sure you focus on one of those completely. If you want slashing polearm then keep slash maxed, if you want thrusting polearm keep your thrust maxed, if you want crushing polearm keep your crush maxed. AND also keep your polearm skill maxed....the damage variance is figured by that secondary skill and type of weapon you use.

Now to figure out which weapon type to use, you need to think of which types of weapons do what damage to what types of armor. against plate wearers crushing is the way to go, against chain wearers thrusting is the way to go, against leather, cloth slash is the way to go.

Just make sure you have the right type of polearm, and keep your weapons up to date. you can do tons of damage trust me...dosn't matter if you use thrust, slash, or crushing. just keep whichever one you choose maxed and keep your polearm maxed(and use the right type of polearm) and you will be pleased with your damage output.

The question above is the key question, period. My Arms is up to 9 (all I play these days is my cleric) and I'm saving the points, because I can't get a good response. I don't think anyone really knows the answer because no one has probably created a both a lvl 30 pole/slash - armsman and a lvl 30 pole/thrust - armsman, why would they? All the people I chat with seem happy with what they have. The majority are slash.

PS... I wouldn't go with pole/crush.

you don't use your thrusting skills with your polearm weapon. If you are using thrusting polearm, you will use the polearm styles anyway, so i don't see how it matters.....unless you switch to thrust/shield on occassion, then you can use those thrust styles like ratfang and what not

Well... If you want to rip apart enemy tank's chain and scale, use thrusting polearms. I think that the slashing ones look a bit cooler. But you will also get base trains at 1/5 of your level if you go thrust and don't spend any spec points into it.
Info
# Feb 16 2002 at 12:10 AM Rating: Default
Ok, heres an example. You wanna be a slashing polearm spec Armsman/Armswoman. To get your MAX damage up, put points into Polearm. To get your MINIMUM damage up, put points into the base skill. So, lets say you have 10 points in polearm, and 10 points in slash. For example, Your max damage is 10. Your minimum damage is also ten. Lets put 5 spec points into parry. So its 10 pole arms, 5 slash, and 5 parry. Your max damage is 10 but your minimum damage is 5. That was na EXAMPLE, and not what your damage would really be. In this case, its slash. You CANNOT use base styles with a polearm.
Halberd
# Feb 12 2002 at 9:31 AM Rating: Default
The halberd is a slashing polearm, but I've read that it uses the highest 1 handed spec skill, whether it's slash, crush or thrust, to determine what it's low end damage will be. Why is it like that? Is it still like this or was it a bug in earlier versions of the game? If it is, I'm going to spec in polearm and thrust and carry 2 weapons (a halberd, and a pike) and have the benefit of being fully trained in 2 types of weapons.
RE: Halberd
# Mar 04 2002 at 10:51 AM Rating: Default
Can someone answer the above quetion, its a good one.....
RE: Halberd
# Mar 15 2002 at 11:36 AM Rating: Decent
I will try and answer this question again here...
Any polearm armsman has 2 main skills they need to keep up with.
FIRST: polearm (obviously)
SECOND: base skill (depends on what you choose)

there are THREE types of polearms
crushing polearm - don't know an example
Slashing polearm - halberd
thrusting polearm - pike

if you want to be effective with a halberd type of weapon then you need to keep your polearm skill up close to max if not maxed. ALSO you need to keep your slash skill up close to max.
In my opinion you should choose a type of weapon you want to work with, and then keep that skill up along with polearm of course.

right click on your weapon, look at the stats of it. It will say thrust slash crush(type of damage), then it will say polearm. when you buy a polearm make sure you buy the kind of polearm that you are working on. Make sure you are using a slashing polearm if that is what you have focused your skills on. Make sure you are using a thrusting polearm if that is what you have focused your skills on.

A kind of template for a strong polearm armsman would be something like
45+ slash (thrusting is a great option too)
45+ polearm
you will have points left over which you could use to max these two skills to 50, add to parry...or work on shield. Although you will not use a shield with a polearm, I reccommend putting some points into it. If i am the only tank, and fighting many critters(without mezzer), i usually use sword and shield, so i can get aggro faster. Then i concentrate on just using my taunting moves with the slashing styles and get aggro on everything, then focus on one, and kill it....this helps healers since they only have to heal me. You can do this with polearm, but the problem is if you are the only tank you will need endurance for keeping that aggro, and polearm can use alot of endurance quick. Soooo IMO shield is a very usefull skill to have in PVE, and RVR(blocks arrows, stuns etc...)
personally i was going to try for
45 slash
42 shield(great stun at skill 42 in shield)
45 polearm
8 or so parry
this way i can go really good offense, and a pretty decent defense if i needed to.

# Feb 10 2002 at 12:55 PM Rating: Default
I am a little confused on one point. A polearrm ia listed as a thrusting weapon, according to it's properties, but the thrust skill doesn't effect your ability with it, only the polearm skill effects the polearm ability. Is this a correct statement?
RE: Polearm/Thrust??
# Feb 14 2002 at 4:52 PM Rating: Default
No, if it's a thrusting pole arm, the skill thrust determines what the lowest minimum damage you will cause. Polearm determines its maximum damage. If you have high thrust skill then you won't ever hit for very low damage.

Ruby Slash is for pure Slashing weapons. Polearms are their own identity. You have to use Polearm styles.

Swords = Slash
Hammer = Crush
Dagger = Thrust
Halberd = Polearm

The ones who wrote about the damage being the same are partly correct. Actually the one handers do MORE damage than the polearm, just not in one swing, I can hit for close to 100 with my pole arm halberd about once every 4 or 5 seconds or so, but i can get at least double the swings with my steel ******* sword and hit for high 60's per swing. Double 60 and ya get 120 thus more damage than the polearm. Also i use ants and such to test my weapon damage so I can see things from a max point of view and not from some creature that is going to have better ac benifits due to level (game is very level based) and to add on this point, with the sword i can use the shield and if i dont parry, i block with shield or it misses altogether, this gives me 3 ways to not take damage in combat from a monster, while dishing out more damage in the long run. Also try swinging the sword till its low then switching to the polearm for a finishing blow (dont forget to hit attack again when ya switch to it hehe) Polearms need to be GREATLY enhanced for them to balance armsman class, im wishing id been a merc or pally now actually since pally still gets the weapons and shield and can wear the plate armor while gaining healing ability and armor/combat buffs. Pally is a far far better choice as it stands now but hopefully (hopefully) they will fix the armsman class to what it should be, which is the best melee class, pally's are that now as it stands, too much benifit to wearing same armor, using same weapons (should go hammer and shield for no losses/benifits then ya know what your gonna hit for period) and able to play a constant chant spell that heals you all thruout battle by a significant amount. You are getting healed for 25% or better every round and when you block with shield or parry or they miss, you get the heal and gain the advantage on even orange/red's as a pally when decked out nicely.
It just dont pan out for armsman, no wonder there arent many...fix it please I hate to start again lol...
RE: Crypt
# Mar 04 2002 at 10:27 AM Rating: Default
Crypt, you were making good sence until you got to the part about the Pally being a superior fighting class. I now have one of each - because the Pally is weak! Heal chant draw too much aggro in group and you will die w/o proper healers. The Pally hits 1/2 as hard as the Arm(same weapon, race, level, spec). Stick to your Armsman dude.
RE: Crypt
# Feb 03 2002 at 8:01 PM Rating: Default
The good thing about polearms is that they do a hell of a lot of damage in a short period of time. In RvR, it will not matter that you can get 120 damage in 2 swings, you will have a split second to do some damage then move on. Being an Armsman, you are expected to charge at a group of enemies. You will not have much time to do your damage before you are killed, so better to get one good punch on them than one weak one and then death.

Halbred/Crushing
# Dec 13 2001 at 7:23 AM Rating: Default
My question is if you put points into crushing and polearm and then use a halbred does putting points into crushing up that damage even though the halbred is a slashing weapon. I'm asking this because I haev heard from quite a few that the halbred can be used with all 3 thrusting/crushing/slashing but if you put points into crushing you get a 2 for one deal where it works with the halbred then you can use another polearm that uses crushing. Also is this path with points good for RvR since no real armor has resist to crushing. Thank all in advance for there info on this subject.
