clearing it up
# Nov 26 2006 at 8:56 AM Rating: Decent
ok, wep skill increases MINIMUM damage and wepskill(chance to hit and not get evaded/parried/blocked)plus styles, CD is styles and +% to offswing, piercing stat=str 50% and dex 50%, blades and crush= all str.

and YES O GOD spec 25 pierce, diamondback is a 5 second stun first style in an evade chain. it is the best style in the entire line, because if u r ranger/ns(and mebbe BM) u should use pierce because u have good evades, especially ns.
faster swing=more poison(ns) more dmg from ur dmg add buff(ranger) and more dmg anyways(all)

Hope this cleared it up.
parry and evade

Ok so Im trying to figure out if I should be using 2 piercers or a piercer and a shield as a ranger. But from what I read if you use a sheild then you are not utalizing your parry ability my question is I know as a ranger we get evade abilities is that the same as parry??

My understanding of piercing and critical strikes is this;

Piercing increases your minimum damage threshold. The common definition is something like; "When fighting a monster of equal level, 1 skill point = 25-125% damage, two-thirds of maximum skill points = 75-125% damage, and maximum skill points = 100-125% damage."

Putting points in Critical Strike only gives you the styles (and their attributed bonuses) and in no way affects the damage done.

Dual Weiling vs sword n shield
# Mar 03 2002 at 8:25 AM Rating: Default
I have a lvl 21 Ranger and have piercing at lvl 9.

I have noticed that when I dual weird piercing it makes very little difference in damage output versus just 1 piercing weapon and a small shield. Having shield I block a certain small percentage which helps me from gettin whacked while I deal out the final blows after pulling them with the bow.

I may be wrong but I think the dual weilding might only be beneficial when speccing in the Blades combat style, not piercing.

Any opinions?

The main reason I use two daggers with my NS is that I can apply poison to both. Something I couldn't do with a shield. As for damage, most opponents are death after PA chain, dd shout and poison anyways.

I agree with your point about piercing+piercing vs piercing+shield, but I suppose it would depend upon your chance to hit with both weapons, ie., what points you decide to put into dual wield.

When you dual equip, your hit will come from either hand, regardless on your dual wield skill, but where the dual wield comes into play is a hit from both weapons simultaneous. As a Ranger you'll no doubt pull and take as much damage off you opponent with your bow and then start melee if he gets close enough, and hopefully drop dead at your feet, just before you wield your weapons :p

Depending on the Mob but if it then takes four strikes to kill it, your base chance (again depending on your points put into the dual wield skill) is 25%, so you may have got off one 'double strike' and taken some damage. Alternatively if you had shield and a weapon, you're <hopefully> reducing the damage to yourself, but if it took three normal strikes and a double to kill it dual wielding, its gonna take five strikes with just one weapon.

But I don't think that either weapon type, Blades or Piercing would make any difference when opting for dual wield, because of the quickness of the attack speed. You may get off five strikes from a piercing weapon in the same time as you would get three from a blade, and if you dual base 'chance' is 1 in 4, ie., 25% then you have more chance of a double strike with piercing... and of course it is a 'chance' to double-hit, you may not or you may hit more :/

I suppose what really decides it is the damage dealt over a set period of time... and I haven't played a Bladed character long enough to say one way or the other :(

Hmm... hope thats no to confusing, although I had trouble following my own train of thought through that... :p None of the above is written in stone of course, just my opinion and I remember reading somewhere; opinions are like a*holes, we all have them and they all stink :p

Highlight your skill, like dragonfly or wasp sting and hit shift + I, one of the info area's will be position, wasp sting needs to be done from behind, then you'll get the bleeding bonus.

I think you need a shield (i don't think any NS does) because it's "block" not "parry" which is a block with weapon

I read a post here saying that puting points into weapon specs dont increase weapon skill... well It does and an easy way to prove it is by doing what i did for example...
I had dirk in 1 hand (primary so it shows weapon skill for primary) and on the 2nd hand i put another dirk... no weapon skil change... then i put bristles fang(+2 pierce) on my 2nd hand... and weaponskill went up..

Can you really, honestly tell a difference in skills at lvl 3?? im mean come on.. all classes are quite honestly basically the same till at least 6....and then...they are still basically the same around 10...I honestly didnt notice a big difference in how useful the respected classes were until mid teens, low twenties...and i also think the ole Alameister should hire a buddy to review all the worthess posts... including this one =)

Hiya been reading all your posts, its funny how one person says one thing they someone else contradics them. For spec points it does not increase your weapon skill but it does increase your damage output because it raises your minimum damage so the people out there who dont use there spec points will only very rarely hit with full damage where as someone who has there spec points maxed will very easily kill the same. As for ur spec points being diff from ur training window thats because thats how much they cost at lvl 3 say it will cost u 4 points to raise it to 4 then 5 points to raise it to lvl 5. Sorry to go on and on but servers are down lol
RE: piercing
# Dec 25 2001 at 8:28 AM Rating: Default
Yes, it does increase weapon skill. Ask any archer why their bows skill is so much higher than their melee weapon and sit and ponder that, friend.. Please don't post things when you're not sure of what you're writing.
RE: piercing

That would be so our critical shot DOES MORE DAMAGE. All skills increase when you spend spec points in them... THAT'S the whole point in spending poitns is to raise your damn skill. And raising your skill INCREASES your damage.

Yes, you will do more damage. You might want to put a few into Celtic Dual also.

Being a lurk ranger, this is my suggestion on dealing with skill points and piercing.

I am maxed on bow and one down from pathfinding at lvl 11 atm. My piercing is at 4, blades 2, celtic dual 2, slealth 4 I think.

Anyways I notice that when I put skill points into piercing I melee better. I have found that being in groups my job is to pull. Once I pull my job is very hard to figure out. I suck at melee compared to others. But when I put some spec in piercing and I dual wield 2 piercing my melee imporves. Plus now that I am in groups with a tank I can back stab for some respectable damage while the mob is on the tank. I am going to spread out my points to where I am maxed in bow, almost maxed in pathfinding, then spread the rest of the points out between stealth and pathfinding.
Plus at lvl 10 we get a detaunt which will help very well in groups I am going to say for sure.
RE: Suggestion
# Mar 27 2002 at 4:06 PM Rating: Default
In my experience, as a Lurikeen Ranger I can be VERY effective in group melee, not as a tank of course, but as melee support.

My typical strategy is to pull as required, detaunt the monster off me with scorpion and let the tanks start to work, then I stick and get behind the monster and start my backstab combo attack using snow shower and gale.

This works wonderfully on reds and purples with the backstab combo hitting at least 3/4 of the time doing about the same damage (with PF bonuses) per combo as what the tanks are hitting for.

This also allows me the freedom to help immediately help draw any aggro off the healers and casters as required til the tanks can come to the rescue.

Of course there is no way I could tank and do this since I can't use the backstab attacks when I am drawing the aggro. This also seems to add up to more damage overall than if I just stand back and pump arrows into the monsters. It is certainly less expensive :)

I am sure there is probably a better combo to use, but this is working for me right now.

I have a problem right now with specialisation.

When i was level 4 in my skills, i didn't have the wasp skill and when i get my skill to 6, i did get wasp skill but didn't get the bumblebee one.

I have the same problem with shild spec. i need a level 4 in skill to get the level 3 numb skill.

Is there something that i am missing ?

Can it be related to my class ? i'm an heroe.

RE: Skill level
# Nov 24 2001 at 6:16 AM Rating: Default
The training Dialog isn't your level, but rather how many points it will cost to raise your skill one level. The point cost is simple to figure out, you have to pay points equal to the level you will be. Level 4 cost 4 points.

On another note. If your Page says you are skill 4, and you don't have styles for skill 4, you might be getting a skill raise from an item. Check that as well. You styles are based on Base skill, not raised skill. You combat damage percentage is based on Current, or raised, skill.

I am a nightshade and have the same thing. I noticed that when in the training dialog, my numbers say I am level 4, for instance, and then I go into my stats page, the level for the same skill says 3. So what's happening is that the numbers in the training dialog display the number that you will BECOME AFTER YOU TRAIN, not your current level. I find that the numbers in my stats page match the skills that I am supposed to have at that level. Maybe you have the same thing.

attack skill
# Oct 30 2001 at 6:22 AM Rating: Default
besides styles here's what the general idea is about damage output with higher skill:
at no or low training you do 25% TO 125% damage. then at more specialisation your average damage goes up. at half your lvl spec 50 to 125 then up to 100 to 125% at full specc (max for lvl).
Can;t say i can verify the data but it seems that most ppl see this as the way damage is related to style spec. So it DOES pay to put more pts into it.
# Oct 29 2001 at 8:07 PM Rating: Default
I have noticed the same thing. I'm up to lvl 3 in piercing and stopped putting points in myself. I really don't think putting points into melee skills increases your attack power, ect.

Ok here is an experiment I performed. Did not put any points into my skill. Reached level 5, and maexd it out. Without styles my damage nearly doubled. So It DOES seem to have some bearing on the damage you do. I still hit about the same frequency however.

If you put points into a melee skill does that increase your effectiveness with the weapon or do you just get more combat styles?
RE: Just styles???
# Oct 24 2001 at 3:32 PM Rating: Default
your attack rating does not go up when you put points into this skill... it go's up at the time you level. both your attack skill and damage stay the same when you add additional points into this skill, I have not put any further points into this skill since lvl 3, and am lvl 9... am still hitting well and am advancing along with what type of weapons i can use... obviously these findings lead me to believe that putting points into melee skills does not increase my overall effectiveness with the weapon, but only provides me with the more advanced combat styles. again... obviously i may be wrong too, hell i am only lvl 9 and been playing the game for an entire 2 weeks. just my input.
Weapon Type for Lurikeen
# Dec 25 2001 at 8:49 AM Rating: Default
Okay, regardless of inevitable "you're an ahole" crap, i'm going to say this anyway: no idiots replying to this.

In the end game, for a Lurikeen Ranger what is going to put out a higher damage to time ratio? In other words, a battle lasting 20 seconds, does piercing or blades average higher damage say at level 45? To further that question is any battle in camelot at any level long enough to even care? After 15 seconds are you or the mob always dead? If so, if piercing is 10% more effective, in reality it would be 0% more effective since not enough time passes for anyone to care. So, regarding their low starting strength, with their high starting dexterity and quickness, what is really better? Blades, or piercing? Obviously comparing the best weapons for the respective levels. Levels 40-50, as at level 10 I really don't care, much like the idea of how long will the longest battles really last, on the average..

A very black and white question here I'd be interested in as well.. the best slash / blades weapon known in the game (one handed, ranger usable, no pole arms! this is from a lurikeen ranger don't forget!), vs the best piercing weapon (range usable!!). So which hits harder per hit? From looking at the style descriptions alone I'd have to assume slash..well..and it'd just seem to make sense.

Also to take into consideration what stats affect each skill, blades and piercing. Some claim both use strength/dexterity. Others say blades is strength and piercing is dexterity. I personally have an 86 quickness at level 6, so figure at level 50 I'll have ~105 unbuffed, but I have no idea how quickness translates into weapon delay.. still, thought I might point that out. If you're one of them people reading here who "knows" for sure because it's in writting or whatever, post the links.

I really hate starting a new game/character, playing for 6 weeks only to find up I fuqd myself.

(rangers, actually I believe all archers, gain strength, dex, and quickness as they level, but if you need to hear it from me to come to this realization, stop right now and don't hit reply)
RE: Just styles???

You're so wrong it's not even funny. I won't go on about how and why. It's really, really simple.. if you really want to know, for yourself not some BS argument here (I AM right. I guaranF'nTee you), then do this: Go to your server, or another, make a character. Look at your weapon skill. Play the 15 minutes it takes to level. Look at your weapon skill again.

Then go train that weapon skill 1 point higher.

Look at your weapon skill.

It went up again after training..

wow, damn, that's a tough one.

YES damnit it DOES help.
RE: Just styles???
# Sep 10 2002 at 7:12 PM Rating: Default
Maybe help clear some things up. First of all, damage by piercing is affected by Dex and Qui. Damage by blades is affected by str. If you spec a melee skill it affects your base damage. Doesn't affect how often you hit or anything else. Just your base damage. Therefore, if you are a shade and you have high piercing, everything will land harder. Backstabs, melee, styles, everything.

Just my two cents.
RE: Just styles???
# Jul 09 2002 at 9:01 AM Rating: Default
Who cares its still not worth to have such high pierce and miss out on some of the better things
for shades. Your dmg ratio will not be that bad if you atleast have 25 pierce. put in more if ya want eventualy but concentrate on your skills
that help you assasinate peeps fast and effecient.
If ya put most of your points in pierce, then
you will probably want to wack on things more in order to get some damage off. If ya put your points in envenom, crit, stealth, then some in pierce then rest in Cd you can rely on putting out dmg alot faster then some shades who rely on pierce and Cs alone. And thats what you want to do take your opponent out and move. You dont want to sit there with your blade/piercers in your hand
waiting to get smacked up .Leave that to the tanks. Run up the keep wall smack em with CS poion em and prob get a few double taps in because of Cd then jump! Now that is fast and effective.
RE: Just styles???
# Sep 11 2002 at 9:39 AM Rating: Default
I wasn't suggesting you take piercing too high. These are the specs my shade will have at 50:

Piercing 39 (easily modified to 50)
Crit Strike 39 (3 style perf artery)
Stealth 40 (easily modified to 50)
Envenom 41 (easily modified to 50, use all poison)
CD 5 (left over points)

Use what you want but I personally don't think 25 in piercing will give you any 1 shot kills.
