When you get new spells, if you have a lesser form of them, they are simply replaced by the new spell, and do more damage, so thats why it looks like you have less spells than you should.

Dont comment on something you know nothing about.
I play a thane, 50th lvl, and i defiantly dont have problems with wardens, bards and the like. The thane will not usually beat a pure tank in combat, that is true, but against champions and paladins i am very well-matched. My shouts do over double the damage you said they do to equal level casters....
Wardens, friars, bards, ministrels, etc are easy to kill alone, so you must have seen a 50th warden own maybe a 30th thane or something....
Thanes are not a gimp class by any means, in fact they they are quite popular. So noone listen to this guy, he probaly is just bitter by being owned by so many thanes.

well you see the thing is, if your going 1h and a shield you should at least get slam(42) and whatever your 1h to 39 this gives you the best fatigue ratio to damage and youll block so many times youll wonder to yourself "could I take a mob with just my shield?" dont forget stormcalling to 50

On the other hand if your going 2h get to 39 just like the 1h and 42 into parry. with this you get the best fatigue to damage ratio for you 2h and most of the time mobs will be missing you with your 42 parry.

I have a lvl 9 thane and he rules but the only problem i have is with 2h weapons i love them but i cant use my sheild when i use 2h but the dmg on the weapons are like 45-60dmg per swing and with my 1h it is 20-25 i just want to know if i should stop with 2h and go 1h or stick with 2h beacuse of the better dmg

Well as all guys said here,its you choice,but i can tell u when i started with a thane i used 2h axe and i got killed many times 'cuse the mob hits me 2 times ,when i only hit once.2h weapon is slow.Using a shield and 1h weapon is much better and easier to fight mobs.But its your chioce. :))

PS:Its not much differnce in dmg between 2h and 1h when ur a bit higher lvl

I realy dont know why ppl say that using 2h weapons or 1h is the same..
When u r using 1h wep. with a shield u have a chance to block & parry (if u have put points on shield&parry)and that chance of parrying and blocking saved my *** many times.

It does work the same way basically. In the case of Thanes, a higher Piety gives more damage and less chance of the mob resisting.

Hey guys. Got a lvl 45 thane now with
41 sword, 42 storm, 19 parry, 24 shield. Works really great in RvR since I can basically kill a group of greys with 1 hit of Mjollnir :)
Anyways, I have been a Thane for 5 months now and this is what I can give for advise:

Soloing ojs are great until around lvl 38. From then on, ojs are like 5 or 6 lvls above you so watch out. So what I am saying is that lvl 50s are oj to me now. . . Dont really want to solo them yet :(

The advise of doing mjollnir first to pull is not that great since mjollnir is AE. Try starting with the greater lightning stuff then mjollnir, insta, mjollnir, then the PBAOE.

From what I see, 2h weapons do not have a big diff from 1h. I switch between the twilight soul searer and the blessed northern sword and shield and the difference cant be seen. The only way you can tell the big diff is when doing greens :P So, basically, if you see a green invader, switch to 2h and see him fall in 2 hits.

I am trying to balance between parry and shield so I can switch between 1h and 2h. It's a great idea since I parry about 4 times and block about 5 times in battle meaning i only get 5% dmg.

Realm Abilities:
If you want major stormcalling power you need to put in in augmented acuity and serenity. Really good power regen on lvl2 on both.
Regen end (tireless) works great to reduce downtime.
Haven't really tested this but i would if i could (need feedback on this). Put more shield than parry (or vice versa), then put some on mastery of parrying(or vice versa). That should balance shield and parrying pretty well.
AE stun = no good unless they increase the stun length.

And I think that is all. Oh one more thing, DO NOT PULL AGGRO unless you have really good armor and can block or parry attacks like crazy. Cuz you will be wasting healer mana :) Oh, and always have shammies buff you! Shammy buffs = 2x healer buffs.

For soloing as a thane to be most effective, one needs to balance, health, end, and power, so you can rest up all of them when youre sitting down

If your main downtime is health -- Just cast more spells (remeber instas can be recast at least twice during a battle) and always use styles -- consider switching to 1 handed.

If your main downtime is power -- Don't cast so many spells, and dont use your instas.

If your main downtime is endurance -- either youre doing everything right, or you need to kill higher mobs.

Doing this effectively, i can solo yellows with only about a 15 sec downtime after the battle, i usually use 2 handed when soloing although i plan to spec shield to 42 myself...

All these Thane specs are very good except I think every body is forgetting a couple things.

1.Archers will own you unless you block their arrows.
2.Parry doesn't block arrows.
3.Stormcalling is what makes thanes unique so you might as well max it.
4.Shield does same thing as parry except it can block arrows.
5.2h have very small difference in dmg compared to 1h
6.The enemy will always get to you somehow so your ham/axe/sword better not be specced 1
7.You don't HAVE to use hammers, unless you're cheap and you want the lvl 5 freebee

Using all this ancient lore you would most likely end up

50 Stormcall
50 Axe/hamm/sword/
Rest in shield

You dont have to follow this and if evry1 did it would be boring but if you just trying thanes or are a noob this is a good basic all around @$$ kickin thane

I am personally speccing both shield and parry,
I dont need shield at 42 cuz when casting u have 0 use of your shield.

the chance to parry and blocking is cumulative so the more even u spec shield and parry the higher chance u have of either parry or block.
remember that shield has half chance to block dualwielders.
so say u have 20% chance to parry 20% to block
total chance is 44% (because the chances to parry/block is calculated separately)instead of just shield or parry that gives 40% but u miss out on some good stun styles but that im am prepared to sacrifice for melee damage.

And your buffs are really good at 50 especially if u combine them with +% buff items/artis.
Gives u more weaponskill and hp's to solo with.
When u maxxed u'r skill bonuses on shield andd parry for me that is 23+11 17+11 u will ahev a great chance to parry or block a blow from mobs.

Remember u aint there to whop tank butt, just stay back DD the tanks from afar in that way u support your own tanks u will always outdamage your melee with Stormcalling in dmg if u spec high in it. and if u get in heat of battle go hunt some cloth when they run u raghnarok+insta their butts and laugh at them. well it all sounds easy enuff.

One more thing, many thanes have trouble hitting tanks with slam cuz the chance to hit with shield styles are based on your weaponskill yes and high weaponspecs and str increase weaponskill.

I have shield 23 to get paralyze 6 sec stun on backstyle sword 50 for raghnarok in heat of battle 50 for maxxed selfbuffs since i play W/O buffbot,

But hey this is my style of play. i might respec to classic 48/42/39 to try it out but not yet.

About 1h or 2h weapons i say im semi 2h if i chase a cloth stun pull out 2h useraghnarok and instas. if i meet a pure tank in rvr i sometimes engage 1h shield them until i get backup. if im alone well then im trying to kick him, but i havent won against many tanks in the Bg's

I'm gonna have to agree with him, max your weapon and stormcalling. As for shield and parry I tried to keep them equal till level 40, then I started pouring my mini-ding points into shield, I also have a lot of items that boost my parry, so while parry is specced to 12 right now I have items that add +10. I find doing this lets me block and parry a lot in fights. And as far as 2h vs 1h go I use both. 2h I use for soloing, 1h and shield I use when I RvR (to block arrows) and when I'm not the main tank in the group, this way I can put guard on the main tank and block a few shots for him. If I am the main tank I'll use the 2h if I have a good group that functions well and can keep me alive, if the group isn't real great I'll switch back to 1h and shield to help keep myself alive. Anyway thats just how I've specced, I've played this guy since I got the game and seem to do really well in groups and solo.

I have to disagree 2H weapons do almost double if not more than 1H weapons. I have 44 Storms 44 Hammer and 20 Parry. I parry against yellow con mobs 2 to 3 times a fight and that is more than enuff for me to have very little down time after a fight. Yes in RvR situations I do believe a shield could be very useful against range attacks and may still drop points into shields that is why I have stopped at 20 Parry. But for 1 on 1 fighting or your are tanking for a group 2H weapon is your answer.

I have a level 34 thane that can solo oranges with ease in both rvr and with npc's. I suggest that a thane should balance parry and shield to get them both the max level using very little points. 48 stormcalling is all that a thane should need because to get the last str spell is useless for how many points you spend. There is a huge difference between 1 hand and 2 hand weapons. For instance i can hit for 250(with dmg add) with my 2 hander. With my 1 hander i can hit from 90-120 that much dmg with 2 hander can help u take out almost any caster in 2 shots. i use hammers because the styles are really nice once you get higher levels. I can outdamage a warrior without even using my spells to pull easy. I suggest that all of you take my character in consideration and try to disregard this guy.

Fully specced in storm calling at 34 i can take out the mobs hp by 1/3 before the mob reachs me and the dmg add helps tons. Again someone who has never played a thane trys to make a comment on them.

I cant say I am impressed with a spell that does absolutly bugger all, but I expect cost more power to cast.

i play a scout to 48 before...decided to try out a thane cuz i hear it's fun. anways...i hear all these people saying...u don't kno da class well enough cuz u're only level 10 so shut up. well...i've seen alot of 40+ people and more than half of them play like newbs. especially da healers since they've been plvl'd their entire careers. i have yet to meet one that can play their class rite. anways...don't always listen to the opinions of someone that says "i kno everything cuz i'm level 45". for all u kno...he might really suck and still play like a newb...always aggroing when he shouldn't, breaking mezzes, cannot keep up wit constant pulls, etc. and i keep hearing people saying...thanes rule cuz i can outaggro a warrior that cons orange to me. but then why in da world would u wanna do that? so u can waste da healers mana because u wanna show off? let's see u show off when u're dead because da healer spent all his mana on u're dumbass.

dunno what server yer playing on man but all the lvl 40+'s I play with dont play like newbs.. my group fought in the hardest trow room behind circle room pull 3 at a time a lot and we never died once in 5 hours... sure theres a few dumbasses and there always will be. This is what I do, which works very well;

First, you have to make sure the mod you're trying to pull is as close to Mjollnir's max range as possible. Then, cast Mjollnir, immediatly casting the instant DD (so that you'll be able to use it again soon if the battle runs long). Then cast the timed DD, and if you were close enough to the first spells max range, you'll have enough time to get in another Mjollnirs and the point blank AoE. That's 5 spells off before you even engage in combant... devastating ;)

It's really up to you. I personally don't see a big difference between one and two handers damage-wise, which is why I use a one hander and a sheild. The Sheilds skill gives you abilities like Guard and Engage, which are very nice. But if you don't want to use sheilds, then don't bother; go for two handers :)

you can do a Half specification between shield and parry ..... got good result from this ...
parrying with your 1 handed sword and blocking with shield
