How in the name of Loki do i use this abbility?
RE: Distractions?
# Jan 28 2002 at 11:32 PM Rating: Default
Hold F5 and then use the arrow keys to target the ground in the direction that you want your mob to turn, then use the skill to throw a stone at your target ground, and watch in awe. It is a great skill, as I have been able to single pull from a camp by distracting the other mobs, and stabbing the one I wanted in the back. Hope that helps some.. Long live Midgard!

What do you mean use the skill to throw a stone. I cant seem to find or use that skill at all. when i press F5 i get the arrows but after that i dont know what to do.
RE: Distractions?
# Mar 22 2002 at 1:20 PM Rating: Default
You need to drag the skill over to the menu bar like
you do with combat styles. Use F5 to position the arrow (using your movement keys), usually to the far side of the mob. Then click the distract skill icon on your menu bar and hopefully the mob will turn away from you enabling you to sneak past, or to stab it in the back.

if you want to be cooler than the brown lines of dyes, but less than charcoal dye, i say go with DARK GREY dye, its runs for 1gp 25sp, a little pricey i know, but its good for sneaking around.
another reason for not buyin brown dye: **** is brown

a little hint. until you can afford to throw away 30gp for some black dye, might i suggest spending only 6gp on charcoal. it's much cheaper and almost as good a straigh black. you can still tell a slight hint of the original color your armor/shield/cloak. but it's slight and only really appears when your torch is on, which you don't want on during RVR anyway.

now 6gp is no small change for people 20 and under, so for them, i would suggest the brown line of dyes. very cheap (dark brown being like 5sp i think) and it blends fairly well, not a good as black or charcoal, but you're poor at the moment, live with whatcha got.

just a hint. i've seen shades and rangers a like in a full royal red suit of armor. stood out like a sore thumb. but that's what they liked. so, that's what it really boils down to.

as for guild emblems, i have a cloak with my emblem that i wear in realm and i got my cloak of the hidden (+2 stealth from greayman quest; i suggest all stealthy types get this cloak) that i actually sprung the 30gp to dye black that i wear when i RVR. cloaks are cheap, light and easily changeable, so if you wanna show guild pride, wear your guild cloak in realm. but ifyou wanna be extra sneaky in RVR wear a more blending cloak.

just a hint. :)

okay...
-you can raise a spec higher than your level.(if you disagree, then explain my 31longbow and 31stealth at level 29.......
-theres a limit to the total magical spec boost you can get for each spec.
-yes, if somethings not giving you a spec boost, repair it...or also it may just be too high level for you.
-stealth max-ing may seem useless, but not in rvr, and DAOC is completely about RvR.

---scouts climb trees? I never heard of that. That would not be advantagious because everyone would spot you..run up and attack you (((the z axis is ignored I believe))); i dont see why mythic would put it in the game.

From a Fellow SB i have a lvl 50 SB friend and a couple other 40+

I myself am 30 so here goes

Go to 40 stealth..u will get items to make it 50
go to like 35 with CS and work on ur weapons.
Personally i think envenom is a waste but you can always get ur weapons poisoned by some other dolt who wasted his time with that.

Where do I stop the rest?
# Feb 03 2002 at 5:25 AM Rating: Default
Ok Im a newbie still and dont know anything about the high end game so I dont want to gimp my character. I have a 8 Nightshade so far I like it. But I notice I need more stealth I can hardly sneak up on anything if it has friends around (Im at the level you get distraction) I know I should max out Crit Strikes and Stealth and I prefer the Celtic Dual to Piercing skills but also keep my swords poisioned (even with lvl 1 venom) So how far can I take the others and still be able to Max Stealth and Crits? I am putting points in all as I go and will stop those that I wont be taking any higher when I get there as opposed to dumpiong all into stealth and crits now. Question is? where do I stop the rest?

I think after Stealth and Crit my prefrences are Evenom then Dual then Pirecing. I guess Ill max dual and Envenom at same level then whatevers left into piercing. but Ive already taken piercing to skill 5, is that as far as I should take it?

Also Ive read Hibernia is gimped when it comes to RvR but I figure we are probably stacked with shades, eldriches, and champs, what else is needed out there on the frontier?

I am a 32 Infiltrator.

Let me just answer everyones question on stealth.

Max your stealth.

RvR. no question of the benefits so this answers everything. I have been just mere steps away from purples from other realms and they never see me.

An important matter is, at higher levels, critical strikes gets you perferate artery which is a FRONTAL assault. If your stealth is not maxed, what are your chances of pulling off this move when you are seen so easily by anything over a yellow. You want to hunt with the big boys and do purples and get a good crit...max your stat(even with help from items is a great way...but key is maxed)I max my crits and stealth and hit purples(max) for 200.

Resting...I can rest anywhere and not gain agro.

I can make it to the bottom of a dungeon without escourt and join a party real deep...gotta get those purples if you want to level quicker then just those blues uptop...

I may be an infiltrator, but even if your a scout...how do you plan on getting to a position to plunk someone full of arrows if I can see you trying to hide behind that tree on the hill...trust me. I have picked off enough archers in RvR because they just dont hide well enough..get me close enough...your done little archer....(done it so many times even when I was in the 20's as archers seem to come over early thinking they can sit back and not get hit)

Stealth can save your hide. get you to where you need to be in RvR or dungeon...

question is, how good do you really want to be?

Putting points into Stealth will completely matter for a scout, id cap it at all times, along with your bow if you can. I RvR Stealth is the only way Scouts will stay alive for a long enough time to do their job, Scouting.

Ok,Ive read a lot about item buffs doing nothing for your skill if it goes over your level. So if my longbow skill is at my level and i get items that will buff it over, will that not effect how soon i get crit shot? So pretty much items do crap if your already capped? Thats kinda stupid if you ask me but oh well. I am a Scout and have kept my stealth one below my level (with longbow maxed ofcourse) is this going to matter at all or should i stop putting points into it?
RE: Stalth Pendragon
# Jan 01 2002 at 3:44 PM Rating: Default
This isn't entirely true.

With weapon skills, adding item based specc points will not give you any more styles, even if the new specc point total would give you one, however, it will increase your effectiveness with the weapon. You're right however in that putting a specc over your level won't help, as weapon damage is calculated by the weapon specc in relation to your level and can't get any better (afaik) that specc = level. You may hit more though, I dunno.. haven't tested that.

In the case of stealth however, I think it does make a difference. If you have stealth = level and add a few specc points through an item, I believe it will effect your ability to stealth beyond what would normally be capable at your level. Since stealth is so level vs. level based however, I doubt a few extra specc points is going to save you if you're level 30 and up against anyone 10 or more levels above you. And again, I haven't tested this fully, but I don't think stealth above your level will help you increase your detect hidden range.

Post up here if you find out differently through testing. I'd love to hear people's experience with overlevel speccs.

RE: Distraction Skill

Press and hold F5, while doing so, use the movement keys to move the indicator that will appear once you hold F5 for about 1sec. When you release F5, the position is set (not relative to you, so if you move, you may move "out of range"). Then you can use the distration button to "silently toss a small rock". It will often cause a monster to turn in that direction (possibly away from you for a backstab setup). I suspect this has absolutely no use in RvR play.

Stealth?
# Dec 17 2001 at 7:18 PM Rating: Default
This information is from Branen. The information listed above on the levels to gain the skills is not correct for all classes. This was mainly taken from a Midgard standpoint but should help some folks. Enjoy the reading! I sure did!

Stealth is one of the most confusing topics in DAOC. Usually, within a certain distance, player models appear on your screen. Stealth reduces the distance at which you appear on other player's screens. Once a player enters this radius (which we call the bubble of stealth), THEN you can be spotted. This bubble is probably governed by the ratio of your stealth skill to your character level, and the opposing character's stealth score/level.

There are two other warnings about stealth. The first is that pets will always see through stealth. This may not be a bug, but Mythic has only mentioned NPC monsters will have their targetting fixed, pets may not be changed. This is both a Hunter's friend and foe, your pet will allow you to track down enemy archers, minstrels, etc. who attempt to get away via steath. However, enemy Druids, and other Cabalists will be able to do likewise. The second is about guild cloaks, while stealthed, they will not be transparent. Anyone who gets close enough to see your outline, will obviously see you, although this is trivial. By then, they are also able to see your blue name, and a shimmering outline (which by itself is pretty obvious).

The most important aspects of stealth are that it breaks targetting. If you are far enough away that hitting stealth causes the enemy player to be out of your bubble, they cannot target you, and any targetting they had before is gone. This is invaluable when going alone to grief in the frontier. It is also useful when fighting in large groups, and you want to get an archer off you from across the battlefield. You simply stop shooting, wait 10 seconds, and stealth and then move and unstealth.

The other benefits of high stealth include being able to run faster when stealthed, as well as staying stealthed when nocking an arrow. Currently, the ratio of your stealth level to character level is the percentage chance you will stay stealthed when nocking a normal shot. If you have 20 stealth at level 40, you have a 50% chance of staying stealthed when firing. Critical shots are like normal shots, only the chance is reduced by 20%. The same character would only have a 30% chance of staying stealthed if he tried to fire a Critical Shot.

Stealth is necessary if you want to solo grief (although you do not need a high level). It is not necessary if you want to scout (although it makes life convenient), or fight for keeps. If you are fighting, you are not stealthed and those points largely go unused. It is possible to scout without stealth, I do it all the time. I either hide behind trees and associated graphics, or I stand far off away from zone walls or roads and hit my stealth button. The bubble of stealth at level 1 is still somewhat small, and allows ample room for you to observe a road without being seen. The addition of plus stealth items means you can still have decent stealth without training it.

There are only 3 known stealth styles, and Hunters only get one (which is useless in RvR). Distract only works on NPC's, and is Shadowblade only. Danger Sense tells you if an NPC is a scout (meaning it will run and get other NPCs to help). It does NOT tell you if another player sees through your stealth. This ability is only useful in PvE, so it is useless in RvR even though Hunters DO get it. The last one, Detect Hidden is ShadowBlade only. I won't go into its mechanics because Hunters do not receive it.

Note that character level has almost everything to do with whether you are detected or not. Fully max specced stealth characters cannot escape your detection if you are much higher level than them. At a mere 9 stealth, I was able to find and kill fully max specced (this is speculation, but based upon their posts in message boards...) blue Rangers easily because my character was much higher level.

I want to be sure of Stealth/Combat ?

How important is it for a shadowblade to be in stealth before hitting, and what bonuses will I get from this tactics ?

How important is it to be standing BEHIND a mob to do a backstab ?

I have a feeling that Stealth and standing behind actually dont improve the hit made on the mob ?

Am I wrong ? For example, in a lair, its very frustrating to be able to go behind the mob sometimes, if I fail to do that should I not use the backstab and go for other attacks ?

/A bit rookie...

when you are in lairs your distraction ability comes in very handy. by using your F5 button you can target an area on the floor and then target the mob. the mob will then look at the distraction poing-well normally :) , and then will leave his backside totally exposed so you can dig around in his back for his kidneys..
Hopes this helps some.

you have to be in stealth and behind a mob to perform a backstab correctly. Are you watching your messages closely? When you do perform it correctly you will get a damage bonus, plus you get to try for evicerate which does a bonus dmg plus bleeding.

I have deleted my nightshade due to difficulty lvling after about lvl 10. I think i was playing the character wrong. Being invisible is important when fighting a mob because of dmg bonuses and effects (the first hits are the most important, they can determine whether you die or kill) but it is very important in RvR. I cant tell you how many times my dwarf healer been murdered by an invisible prowler that my group never sees. In RvR shadowblades and hunters rack up realm points.

I wonder if you stop putting points in stealth if it will still auto train every 4 levels? Provided this is all true of course.

It will only autotrain if your stealth is under 1/4 of your level to make you equal to 1/4 your level. And it will autotrain if you're under--I enjoy a 5 stealth at level 12 (with help from some items.)
Consider not letting this skill autotrain

A lot of people don't know, but if you don't put any points in stealth, it will raise automatically a point every four levels starting with level 8. If you can hold off not raising this skill until you join realm combat, do it. This gives you free points that you otherwise wouldn't get, and your stealth doesn't pay off much until you get into realm combat.

Thief classes at lower levels and no stealth are fools, you need stealth to get close to a mob to backstab... with archer classes you are right to not use points until higher in stealth, it is better to max out bow.

Dont be fooled when it autotrains it takes specialization points so it saves you nothing.

This may be the case for some classes, but not for Rangers.
