Starting a new scout today and woundering what path to go...

Full stealth 2/3 bow 1/3 trust/slash
Full Bow 2/3 stealth 1/2 trust/slash

or wut?

also which is better to use trust or slash, considering most arros say (trust damage) that mean i need skill in trust to get max damage?

Max bow doesn't have to mean 50. I'm only going 40-45 because of item bonuses. Heres my temp:

45 Bow
45 Stealth
29 Thrust
29 Shield

I will keep Shield and Thrust at half my level until I start getting the extra points at 40. I will start raising Stealth at around 20 (I know all the exact numbers but don't feel like explaining).

RE: new scout
# Mar 06 2002 at 4:08 PM Rating: Default
If you want to be effective. Go full Bow, and the rest into Thrust. Don't bother one bit with stealth til you reach about 20. Put your skills into your weapon and bow, stealth is not good at all in PvE, your weapon is much more important. When you hit 20, then you can stack more into stealth to prepare for RvR. Hope this helps ya.

P.S. Scouts own in the battleground!!!!!!!!!!

It actually doesn't matter. Your thrust skill does NOT affect damage with thrust arrows, etc.

I'm a new scout and I was wondering what is this thing called longshot and volly? What do they do, when do I get them, How do I get them, and what prerequisites do I have to get them?

Thanks

They haven't been implimented into game yet but because mythic finally put in climb for assassin classes i believe it will be soon. Right now their making the assassins better because its unbalenced. once thats done volley and longshot not far behind.

okay the dps stuff, yea you want the highest DPS you can get, but not necessarily the quickest bow...
first off, lower speed is quicker...

a 10dps bow 10spd will hit 10 times as hard as a
10dps 1spd bow....

in the time you could fire 1 normal shot with the 10spd, you could fire 10 with the 1 speed bow, and the damage would equal roughly the same.

Of course though, critical strike is a percent increase, so youd want to hit the hardest you can with that.
...say you hit double damage with crit strike...
a crit strike from the super quick bow might only be...20,
while the slow bow would end up being more like 200
((the numbers are whacky because im using examples...no such 1speed bow exists))

also if you have a super quick bow, you will spend MORE money to do the same or LESS amount of damage(because of crit strike being a % increase in dmg)

in an RvR situation, you hide, and try to kill in one shot...thats not possible with the fast dinky bow
...of course the big bad slow bow would be a killer

also do note, longbows, the slowest and most damaging bows, also have the longest range of everything.

In all cases a SLOW and more damaging bow is better than a fast one

i agree...mythic should have left DPS out and kept the Base Damage listings like it had been all along. Or keep dps, and also put base damage
RE: Weeeeeeeeee BLEEP
# Apr 09 2002 at 2:51 AM Rating: Default
Not all cases...

My hunter makes quick work of one of your scouts with a big slow bow... Provided that i am in range my quicker release interupts your shot all too often.

Your midgard bows to squat damage to my scout (not a highlander or even briton, weak saracen)I have no idea how you guys do anything in rvr, prey always gets away before you can kill it.

Heh 180 to greens I hear?

I'm fully specced in longbow at lvl 24, scouts are totally useless in grouped PvE, but duo scouts can lvl faster than anything, oranges are a breeze, I use shadow oak and since this is a twink I of course flaunt my money by buying the 76s miricle arrows. oranges get whacked with 315 damage at lvl 21, maybe because of the cleric buffs (of course because of them) but hitting for 315 was damn nice :), 2man groups with a scout is the way to lvl, ask anyone who owns a scout.

Scouts are very tough indeed in PvE. But when it comes to RvR we are the most valuable. Get a couple scouts together with longobow maxed and youll take out many before they see you, then just lead them into the trap of 80 tanks waiting on them while their healers are laying on the floor with arrows stuck in them. Just keep your longbow maxed and stealth high and all the hard work of leveling up will pay off :)

Could anyone speak to the differences in the types of bows of the same level... there are three yellow to me at 14... Hunting bow, Longbow, and regular bow. What differences are there? The dps and delay are roughly the same.

What benefit is there to having a Longbow over a Hunting Bow for example?

Thanks

Longbows have the most range and damage but fire the slowest. Bows are next, then hunting bows.

I dont think that a GeForce2 card is gonna help him. His system specs are kinda low. Im 2 Boxing with a P3 500 with a GeForce 2 MX and 396 megs of ram. My seconds is a P4 2 Gig with a GeForce 3 and 512 RDRam and it still lags out during big raids. Duals isn't gonna matter, XP doesn't know what to do with duals. (So it's supposed to know, but it does a **** poor job).

I have XP 1900+ 512MB DDR, Asus MB with Nvidia chipset, and Gf3 on 640 dsl and hardly EVER have lag problems. Raids, even full scale relic raids are a piece of cake, and I don't even turn all my effects off. Sometimes I do turn effects off, and sometiems on the massive 70 peopel groups auto-follow runs I lag, but otherwise is great.

So I don't know what your deal is. :)

# Dec 19 2001 at 4:49 PM Rating: Default
Okay, there are posts here concerning DPS vs SPD. I.E Damage Per Second and Weapon Speed.

Here's the deal. Everquest (for once I think they're example is best) weapons are base damage and base delay. Period. What gives here?! THis is crap. Damage per Second should be derived from base damage, and delay , hence, Damage Per Second!! So wtf?!

Someone is saying a 10dps 10spd bow is slower, but hits harder, than a 10dps 1spd bow? What, *EXACTLY*, does this stuff mean? Because Like I said above..damage per second..weapon speed..combined?? wtf??!? Completely non-sensical. To me, you want the highest DPS possible and the lowest SPD (delay) between attacks possible. But, that's just me.. and I'm probably wrong, course, it still makes sense to me!!

Also I hear archers were nerfed. Okay, I just started playing this game and read a patch message the other day about a 6 week anniversary. Okay, wtf gives? This is a cool game but this is the first time I caught wind of such utter crap. Here's the deal - Im still not sure wtf it matters to have focus bonuses as a cabalist, or if af makes a lick of difference, after playing THREE of them to level 10. lol.. And any of the 3 can solo oranges, sometimes reds. Now I've played a scout to level 9, and I really like it..mostly because I like the idea of sneaking in and killing people, likely going to have 2 of my 4 slots filled with an Infiltrator and a Scout..but anyways.. Okay, so pretty much any caster kicks butt I imagine, doesn't matter..what else is new right..follow tradition. What erks me though is not only does a scout not have half a chance of hitting a red con with their bow, but their damage would suck, AND.. they can't solo them.
RE: Damge
# Jan 06 2002 at 2:19 PM Rating: Default
Heres the deal, these are "nerfed" because in PvE scouts are pathetic, but in RvR, if your high enough, it's a one shot kill from the blue, being able to pick off your target from quiet a distance.
RE: Damge
# Jan 31 2002 at 11:12 PM Rating: Default
that would be true except that every class and their mother has blade turn now. So our crit shots are rendered useless, and no more one hit kills. It once took me 3 hits to kill a grey, and at lvl35 i have 41 bow skill using items.
RE: Damge
# Feb 17 2002 at 2:11 PM Rating: Default
Uh, Bladeturn doesnt effect crits and backstabs unless the bladeturn is placed on a target by someone higher level than the assassin. Then it still only has a marginal chance of success

Money $$
# Dec 06 2001 at 11:46 AM Rating: Default
Here's a hint, the quickest, easiest way o get money is taking up fletching, once it hits around 250, keep down your metalworking, and leatherworking, and try to keep wood working, and clothworking maxed. if that requires making a few dolls or breadboards so be it, it pays off in the long run. That way you are only given tasks on bows and blunt arrows, on oaken longbows you can make upwards of 30 silver per task, that doesnt sound like much, but it adds up QUICK. now that your money problem is solved, you can get the best of the best bows and arrows, and yellows start dropping before they even get to you, at least they do for my scout <11th season>
hope that helps all you money hungry scouts

DPS
# Nov 29 2001 at 4:51 PM Rating: Default
A note on weapon stats…very important for a scout.

DPS=damage per second…this is averaged out to 100% damage potential, if it has a high dam and a low speed (long time to shoot) but had the same DPS as another bow that shoots faster (lower dam and takes a short time to load) you will do less damage with your critical…this is important cause many times you have time for that first shot, so if you can take a blue to near half then you are rocking. But you may only get one or two extra shots off before the MOB closes on you…with a high speed bow you get about 3-4 shots off but since they come after that first mighty blow, I like it having as much damage as possible.

Also it is a lot cheaper, since you will be paying for each shot, to do more damage each shot, the down side is if you miss you are up the creek cause the monster still comes at you.

Also Know your Role.

When soloing max damage spend the cash on arrows, when in a group and you are pulling, use the cheapest flight arrows for pulling, that way the tanks can get the mob off of you, and shoot only once, the normal shot will do. (this is for a medium to large group) for a small group with no major tanks do as much damage as you can in the shortest amount of time much like any other class.

In short, as a class we are bad…but if we learn to finesse the system and know our place we can have a fun time…plus scouts in RvR have all the fun. I expect to be able to get 2 good shots off before anyone figures where I am, more if it’s in the woods, then you run and hide…coming back and harassing…get groups when they are down, target their healers and have fun…what’s the worst that can happen…If your realm-mates are in combat with any of the barbarous invaders…target the enemies healers if they die the group dies…or at least stays dead.

Prior to RVR it’s going to be hard…very hard, you can’t solo blues well, sometimes greens will kill you, and it costs major cash to have good equipment and arrows. In short learn to make cash, we are the most cash driven class in the game.

Well so far I am only 15th level scout, but I can take blues easy with just my sword without doing any damage with my bow, and if I get to start at long range with the bow it isnt even close as they usally die with the 1st or 2nd hit of my rapier when they finally get to me, yellows are harder but still very doable, if my crit shot dosnet hit like I want I just run away and come back after they have stopped chasing and try again, I can easily solo blues all day long.

From what I can gather
# Nov 29 2001 at 4:24 PM Rating: Default
Ok, I have not been playing long (a week) but from what I have gathered with a friend being on beta and all is Critical shot I and II and III and IV… are all lowering of time made to make a critical shot, I is 10% less then the typical double normal, II is 20% less III is 30% less all the way till IX at level 50ish there it is 90% less extra time or 10% more extra time, what a critical shot does…simply it doubles the damage you would have done to a blue if you shot normally. As you go up in difficulty yellow, orange, red… you do less and less extra damage.

Another factor in the Bow skill is that you have greater damage potential the higher the skill, if at max its something like 110-150% of base damage a little lower and it is 90-120 all the way to 70-90 so if you have 1 point in a skill and you use it you will do half the damage someone with the skill maxed out and you will hit less (this goes for all attacks).

The biggest thing with the archer classes and the scout in general is arrows, as you will notice arrows are always gray, if you buy the expensive stuff you will do more damage, and get better accuracy. To the point that anyone buying the real expensive ones even at low levels will be able to kill without entering melee…This is the reason for the Archer nerfs. And should be changed, As it stands it makes fletchery a necessity, you need to dedicate about 3-4 gold to making your own arrows. If this is a second character or you have some high level friend ask him to give you money to get that going. If not you will be paying 5-6 gold every time you go to town for new arrows.

Newbi Recommendations.

Things to think about.

You get 2X your level in skills as a scout, in essence you can max out one skill and have another just one below…but we have 3-4 main skills, my recommendation is max out bow and one melee skill put a few points in shield every once in a while up until you plan on going to RvR after that your priority changes to stealth and bow.
Also buy the best armor you can at level 8-11 I have found myself getting in trouble when I pull that the Tanks can’t get the mob off of me based on my damage output with my bow and thrusting…so without good armor you will die even in a group.
critical shot IV
# Nov 27 2001 at 5:20 PM Rating: Default
Does anyone know what the different critical shot lvls do? I now have critical shot IV but cannot tell that much difference. Also to stay stelth when you are aming bow what is the lvl diff you need to have in bow vs stelt vs lvl of character you are vs lvl of character you are aiming at.
Longbow Skill
# Nov 26 2001 at 11:46 AM Rating: Default
One other thing that I havnt seen mentioned here is that your level of longbow skill determines what level creatures you can crit shot.

lets say you are level 15, and you have 14 longbow skill.

That means you can only crit shot successfully on mobs that are level 1 to 14. If you fire a crit shot on a mob that is level 15 or higher, it will only hit for normal damage.

If that scout was to then complete the level 15 epic quest that results in +2 longbow gauntlets, raising his longbow skill to 16, he could crit shot on creatures up to level 16.

For this reason, and this reason alone, it is worth keeping Longbow skill up high. The reduced time on critshot doesnt really matter, as a long draw time on the first shot has no real effect.

Scouts n Bows
# Nov 25 2001 at 1:14 AM Rating: Good
I read a lot of things here that I agree with and disagree with.

1. Scouts with high level CAN do 150+ dmg with critical. I do it frequently, normally targeting greens, blues. Most damage I've done to orange is 90.
2. High speed is better than dmg per shot. My bow LVL is 20 and every other shot is critical +50 dmg. I'll take 5 shots and drop blue before melee starts (provided 1st shot is critical).
Yellows start at 10% of total HP, oranges at 50% (tend to miss and need extra shots against oranges).
3. Volley is still being put into effect. Only BETA testers that earned it originally have that skill. Saw it demonstrated by friend in Frontier. Very cool. He threw 5 arrows into ground and very quickly grabbed one at a time and shot to specified area near enemies. (You can't target creatures, as it is an area effect shot.)

Oh yeah....forgot to mention I use Oaken Longbow (yellow at LVL19) with flight blunt arrows. I've done well over 200 dmg with footed flight broadhead arrows, but don't like the hefty cost! I recommend the flight blunts as they cost 2s+ and have great range.

TIPS FOR NEW SCOUTS...

Grab all the extra stealth and thrust skills you can. High stealth allows you to aim bow hidden, especially good for when you need to sneak up for 1 time super critical without chance of missing.
High thrust is necessary for melee, as arrows don't kill until you are high in level. Oh yeah, almost forgot, don't underestimate the value of a good shield. Bought the best on the market, riased skill to 5, and block 10% of all attacks.
RE: Scouts n Bows
# Dec 27 2001 at 2:36 PM Rating: Default
Umm no one has volley yet. Hate to break it to ya. All beta chars were wiped. Dont know what your friend did but it wasnt that. Also at lvl 20 the cost of flight broadhead arrows is nothing.

------Okay, first off to shoot and reload automatically...
first click crit shot (when you are in range of the target) then click the bow button twice ((the first click will make you auto release, the second will make you auto reload))
once you fire that shot, click it twice again...
ive gotten up to 5 shots before... If you load the bow before the enemy attacks you, you wont be interrupted if you are holding it...

-----to the level 17 scout... 7.1dps is good, but, your bow is fast (4.0) so you must fire more shots to equal the same damage... If you get a slower bow with equal dps you will be doing more dmg PER shot (I much rather prefer a slow bow
example: say you have a 10dps 1spd bow
and a 10dps 10spd bow
you only get one crit shot so you want it to count for the most (the slow bow will do more dmg)...
also with the fast bow you would need to fire many many more arrows to equal the same ammount of damage

Lvl 18 Scout, LB 20, Thr 14, with ironwood crafted bow (100, 100, 98). If you think scouts can't crit for 150+ on a blue or even a yellow then you are doing something wrong. I do this on a regular basis with crafted flight broadheads on yellows. Blues are almost one shot kills for me (200+ dmg crit). Why waste your time with blunt? If your not making your own arrows and using flight broadheads your loosing dmg you could be doing to the mob. Can't wait to get up in lvl's and RvR with guild mates. Luck all!
