Ranger specc

Okay, I have a lvl 16 ranger.. max in bow and 10 pierc and CD and 7 Path. I know it's a little stupid but it's easy to change.. Okay, if you have max in bow you don't have to melee as much - smart, huh? And Pierc is ½ dex and ½ strenght, blades are 100% strenght. Only if you have more strenght go for blades but I don't care, max your bow and you'll never have to melee so you shouldn't max your pierc/slash/CD but still, it's nice to have a light tank on the team ;-)
Just my opinion, hope you can use it ;-)
Btw, my ranger is a Celt and he maybe do better in melee than elves/lurikeen because of his strenght

Lots of people have posted some good, some bad, I now want to post my opinion.. first off, I don't know it all, and if you don't agree with me, don't listen.

Bow- Your bow is your bread and butter, if you dont use it, chances are you won't succeed. If you don't want to use a bow, perhaps ranger isn't your style. Personally I keep mine maxed, and plan to take it to 50. However, I can see logic in only taking it to 39, then maxing it with items, if you plan to do this, keep your bow maxed until 39th level, since it is absolutly vital to your success.

Blades/Piercers- Which you pick is not big deal, its playstyle, the choice between blades and piercers is NOT a life altering one, simply pick one, and go with it. Blades do more avg. dmg, piercers are faster. Blades get bonus damage more often in pve (in my experience) piercers get bonus damage more often in rvr. Piercers styles are better in my personal opinion, however yours may not be the same.

Celtic Dual- I went with 10 cd myself, some say it makes a BIG diff, some say it makes no diff, I hardly melee so I'm not missing out on too much. I don't know all the hard core facts, but I wouldn't burn valuable points on it unless you know something I don't.

Stealth- If you want to RVR get some, if not, don't. I don't personally see any logical reason for going over 20ish, however I have 20 myself and find it quite useful. The extra speed and the ability to be able to move away from people moving toward me without being seen is well worth the points to me.

Pathfinding- Your self buffs are your advantage over the other archer classes, they are an awesome help especially if you solo a lot, which you will most likely as a ranger as we aren't one of the most desirable classes in a group and I, myself, tend to gain much more exp in an alloted time solo. I'd say spec a good bit into this pre-20 then around 20ish slack off it and get some stealth. The buff's do a LOT of good in lower levels, and will always be well worth the points.

Race- This one pisses me off somethin fierce, I myself am an Elf. My elven ranger has absolutly no trouble doing anything I've ever seen a luri/celt do. These people out here who say Elf rangers are gimps, shove it up your *****

Your race IS NOT and I repeat IS NOT a make or break decision, no matter what class you are, what race you choose WILL not destroy or godlify (yes I made that word up) your character. You may be at a small advantage/disadvantage, but it's not something to ruin your day.

I know it was long, thanks for listenin, flame away if you must, these are my opinions and ideas and there isn't much you can say to change them.

I would have to agree with you I have a lvl 35 Elf Ranger and have no problem lvling or RvR'ing with him. I also have a Luri ranger at the 13th lvl and find very little difference in the two. My elf i choose to use blades and have had very little problem lvling even with a low str. stat. My luri i have decided to peirce and know he will turn out to be a fabuolus ranger. I would not suggest a sheild for in any Ranger, might as well hold a large mirror and flash it in the eyes of all your enemies. Just my thoughts take it or leave it.

I agree with a lot of what you say, and to add on the pierce/blade thing, I find that pierce styles are better, but if you are using a shield and no CD, a lot of blades styles are 'block' dependant or chain of 'block' styles, so if you are going with a shield maybe consider blades...

Again played both elf and luri ranger, the only 'small' difference is that it's sometimes harder to select a luri due to size, but if you're running away :p or half a mile away plinking off arrows, then it hardly matters...

My lvl30 Ranger is one of my alts, so thx for your POV, it all adds to the melting pot... :)

Ok, I have a question. Is there a point to pracing Recurve to 50, over pracing it to 35 and Spell Crafting, etc, the skill up to 50? I know there are reasons with Spells and Styles, but why with Recurve?

Please guys, ok i will admit a ranger sux soloing in a RVR (i havnt killed one person solo yet)if you spec it right tho, like have stealth up, then you will have more sucess then i have. But with a grp, i rock, it helps to have someone watching my back and when the meelees are fighting and dieing and complaining for a res, im there, crit shooting away. Im lvl 21 and crit shot someone for 200 hps, needless to say, he went the other way pretty quick. In a PvE im ok i just do kill tasks and im good. Rangers are easy to an extent, but also require time and effort. It just all goes down to how you spec.

im pretty good RvR. im at L-23 and i can kill pretty much any yellow or blue caster in one hit. im bow spec if u didnt know. but i think rangers are pretty good soloing, although of course i would rather have a healer behind me for when the stealthers decide to poison me or so... just wanted to add my two cents

Celt ranger is an alternative choice, put 10 in str/con/qui.
Celt ranger at lvl24: blade 21 bow 23 path 12
Stealth is next to usless because assasain classes will always see you before you see them, this way you can kill them *AFTER* they CS you, I know, I have done it many times to both shadowblades and infiltrators :) This way you can deal damage at range and in melee.

To all those nimrods out there who preach that Elven Ranger is a poor template, Let me illuminate you. I chose this class because for my money, I want to find challenge in the game, and all the negative press re: Elf/Ranger weaknesses helped me decide this was the choice for me. If I wanted a cakewalk I'd play the kids' playstation and load up on cheat codes. I just reached lvl 17, with no grouping, and am easily dropping oranges now, with minimum melee, and less than 25% loss in hp's. Of course this occurs only after succesful critical hit, and successful secondary shot, otherwise I run like hell. I never use blades, as the % to hit/speed is greater with dual wield and piercing styles, plus there are more bonus enhancing items for the ranger in these skill areas. To all hibernian enemies who hate my sneaky & shady kind, just know that I'm coming for you, and death is coming with me.

Elven ranger blow big time!
# May 11 2002 at 10:15 AM Rating: Default
Still not illuminated. Why did you choose an elven ranger, makes no sense at all. Elves are gimped lurikeens if we talk about rangers, nothing else. There is really nothing to discuss here. If you have such an easy time soloing oranges, it would be even more easy being a lurk. You cant think the mobs to death you know. Elves take 5 points from dex and quick and put em into int which does nothing N O T H I N G fora a ranger. And blades... the reason you dont use blades is just as simple, you do MORE dmg with piercing since damage is based on both dex and str instead of str only which is the case with blades. The chance to hit is based on you dex, not you weapon.

Someone a bit more illuminated

I've said this before on other pages, but some of you just don't get it. It isn't about the class, the race, or the points. These can dampen effectivness, but aren't as important as who's behind the keys. YOU have to know how YOU'RE going to play a class and make it work for YOU. Besides, why are you so mad, anyway? If you're not, sorry, I'm wrong, but you seem pissed off at something. You just get killed by a Ranger or something. And one last thing, if you're so against archers, why don't you stop looking at their message boards?

Advice to Mr Anonymus. Take your additude and go play Everquest where fun is second to being "the best."

Not all of us are concerned with having the "best" race for a particular class, or even think there are "best" races for classes. I picked a Celtic ranger (which by your method would be the "worst" choice) and haven't had any abnormal problems, or someone from a real high-end guild come up and say "why did you pick that race?!" Sure I may not hit for quite as much damage as a half-pint under ideal conditions, but when things go sour I've can take a beating better than any lurikeen, and I can lug more arrows with me.
Best advice to anyone looking to play a particular race/class combination - forget what people say is the "best" race. Pick the race you want to play, put the starting points where you think they'll do the most good, and learn to play your class well. You'll get stat-enhancing equipment soon enough that levels the field, and you may just discover that you have some advantages of the guy that picks "the best" race doesn't have when you have to step outside of you tradition role.

word. i'm sick of people telling me what is best. if people paid attention then everyone would be playing the same races/classes that would be REALLY FUN eh? here's the bottom line....it's a game...YOUR game. play what YOU want and what YOU think is FUN. if you're not having fun even as some uber beyatch then what's the point?

regarding the other post, i am not suggesting that assasin classes get nerfed. I respect the effort it takes to level an assassin class since groups rarely appreciate what an assasin can contribute to a non-RVR group. I think they should be highly rewarded for their efforts to level up. The same can be said though for archer classes when it comes to exp groups though. My position is archer classes' chances of hitting with a full crit should be at least close to the assassins backstab. I think we should be able to override bladeturn at least partially. Again this comes from a mind of only 25 seasons to date but i wanted to clarify my intentions of the other post.

just fishing for opinions here and correct me if i am wrong. Archers vs assasins. It seems that in rvr that an archers crit shot misses when an opponent has bladeturn on. I have been attacked by assasins with bladeturn on and it seems to overrride it. It seems that an assassins rarely if ever miss a backstab because stealth is too effective. Yet it seems all to frequent that my crit shot in my lvl 24 ranger with 24 recurve and a dex of 145 will miss all to frequently to evades, parries and the mid that was able to block completely 8 or so shots in a row with his shield the other night. i would think a recurve skill at my lvl and the highest lvl possible in the 20-24 bg would allow me to at least partially hit this norseman who conned yellow, but i am gettin away from the original subject. The archer's crit is to him/her as the assasin's backstab. no question since we are not tanks and do not have any other way to inflict damage to outweigh our limited hps. There seems to be an inequality to the effectiveness of our main damage dealers, not to mention an understood difference in stealth ability. Seems like tracking would level that field a bit but again i stray. Granted my highest lvl is 25 at this time and i have not shot a bow with a recurve skill at 50 yet. Does this inequality also exist at higher levels?

i think low lvl melee skills help to get you through lower levels but agree they are pretty useless in rvr if you are an archer class with the exception of the Mid hunter class which has formidable melee ability. Hibs and albs archer classes rarely last more than seconds in melee confrontations because of their low hp. you are better off not to be seen and to strike from afar.

i was in combat with a armsman and he came close to me so i had to melee.... and i killed him thats why i think weapon spec is pretty important to. !

Speccing IMO
# Mar 30 2002 at 3:37 PM Rating: Default
Personaly, I keep Bow maxxed, Blades at 1/2, Pathfinding at a little over 1/2, and Celtic Dual at about 1/4. Blades is the best melee spec IMO even if you're a Elf or Lurikeen. Blades do more damage than Pierce overall, and there's more high level magical Blade weapons than there is with Pierce. The only issue with this is that Rangers only gain 1 point of Strength every 2-3 levels. And speccing in Celtic Dual DOES NOT increase your minimum and maximum damage you can do with your offhand weapon. It only raises the chance to hit with the ofhand by .5 %, you start with a 25% chance to hit and it raises .25% automatically per level. So if you want to do decent damage with both your main and offhand weapon, put points into either Blades or Piercing, whichever type of weapon you're using. And by the way, the Piercing and Blades styles are overall better than the Celtic Dual styles. Hope this helps some people.

CD is for duel weild and blades are for hitting faster... thats why you should put points in both
What do you think about my speccing?
# Mar 28 2002 at 5:53 PM Rating: Default
I personally max out my Recurve, keep Pathfinding and CD at half, and put the rest in stealth (taking it to more than half my level)... I put NO points in individual weapons, but I use piercing so as to get the DEX bonus to dmg...

yOU SHOULD READ THE MANUAL THEN SHOULDNT YOU? bUT ANYWAYS IF SAY A BOW WAS BLUE TO YOU THAT MEANS ITS LIKE EASY FOR YOUR CHARACTER TO USE, IF ITS YELLOW ITS EQUAL TO YOUR CHARACTER BUT WILL DEGRADE A TAD FAST, IF ITS ORANGE IT WILL DEGRADE PRETTY FAST AND BE A BIT TOUGH FOR YOU TOO USE,RED AND PURPLE WOULD BE TOO MUCH. GRAY IS TOO LOW AND GREEN ISNT GREAT.
RE: WTF
# Mar 20 2002 at 10:59 AM Rating: Decent
You should also note, items that are a higher color have better stats for that class of item. I usually like to have all orange items. Good stats + wont degrade as fast as red or purple. Colors go like this.
grey 3 lvls or more below u
green 2 lvls below u
blue 1 lvl below u
yellow = u
orange 1 lvl above u
red 2 lvls above u
purple 3 lvls or more above u.
This works for all conning. Not sure if they get more spread out at higher lvls. but up to 10 it works.

Forget Styles, and forget the Myths
# Mar 07 2002 at 4:46 PM Rating: Good
I just wanted to clear a couple things up here.

Never choose your spec lvl for a skill simply for style ability. Bows are just like any other weapon when it comes down to the fact that your spec lvl affects your max dmg output. So stopping at 27-30 really hurts you in the long run. Also, the same holds true for CD/Pierce/slash. Though CD spec lvl affects the speed of your attacks.
Please keep this in mind as you are reading those spec lists and saying, "Oh.. nothing good comes after spec #x)

A couple other things to remember. Forget the items. I saw someone post that a person is crazy for taking anything other than slashing, due to the slash weapons in game. LOL that was funny. You can tell that came from soemone not thinking too hard on the subject. First of all, there are some pretty cool pierce weapons that you can find out there. (Like the ones that drop from Grannies.) Then look at the speed factor, and then last but not least.. pierce is the best weapon hands down against chain armor in RvR (and both albs and middies wear chain). Blunt's great for plate, and slash is the red headed step child for RvR;) Pierce even works better against those casters.

I'm not saying to base you char on what I said. I'm just pointing out what so many here overlook.

bow 50 vs bow 30
# Feb 13 2002 at 11:10 AM Rating: Default
Okay if i have facts right u get Critical Hit X (10) at 30. There seems to be an agrument that maybe u should stop recurve then as no additional skills are possible. Now Volley And Long shot might come above 30 (but assuming they don't for now.) IS it worthwhile going to 50 on Bow. Presently i'm planning on going to almost 50... 46-50 somewhere in there.

Questions
1) What is your bow at?
2) What lvl r u?
3) How much dmg (pls u example) do u do at any lvl above 35 lets say on a yellow Conn and a blue conn?

Hopefully some older kin will post and show us that a) bow above 30 doesn not matter b) bow skill above 30 does matter.

always bow 50 ! dosnt metter if you have X... if you spec it higher it will always get better... at lvl 46 i have bow 46 ! and i do almost 750 dmg on a lvl 50 caster ! im sure i wont with only bow 30. and another thing, you will hit more often with max bow :)
