Information on Hunters

I see a lot of misinformation out here. A good start if you are really interested in what hunters can do is to look at the hunter team leads FAQ on camelotvault.ign.com. If you go to the boards for midgard rouges you can't miss it.

High Spear

My original spec was to go with high composite bow, high stealth, moderate beastcraft and relatively low spear. However, let me tell you from experience -- the hunter's composite bow does not even compare to the power of a scout or ranger. I quickly found that with the implementation of See Hidden it was rare to get a surprise crit shot in RvR anyhow. So, I changed my spec to high spear. With Spear at your current level (item bonuses included) you will do a great amount of damage -- and it has become a very nasty little surprise for those infiltrators and shades who spot me stealthed.

My spec has become: 44 Spear, 40 Bow, 35 Beastcraft, and 32 Stealth. The 44 spear gets me the styles I want (including the high damage, hit from behind, stunning style at 39). 40 Bow ensures that I'll be able to have over 50 with items and RR bonuses. 35 Beastcraft gets me the highest pets. And 32 Stealth, which can get to 50 (after eternally fighting in RvR and +11 from items), but stealth is no longer as important with See Hidden implemented.

High spear has also given me the ability to be far more effective in PvE. I no longer have to rely on a large supply of arrows and do considerable damage with the spear. Word of Caution: Hunter armor stinks, so keep Dismissal handy when using a spear. I often pull agro without taunting and dismissal becomes a life saver.

Composite Bow 39 (50 with items and rr)
Beastcraft 35
Spear 39 (close to 50 with items and rr)
Stealth 39 (50 with items and rr)

You dont have to have low spear at the cost of stealth or vice versa.

IMO the beastcraft past 35 isnt worth the points. Max the other 3 skills instead.
The only thing I could use is lvl 40 dex/qui buf.
Lvl 41 Pets strenght sux since one rarely can find a pet high enough or even bring one in first place.
Lvl 42 AF buf is useless with epic armour since we are capped with that armour set.
Lvl 43 is nice but not worth it IMO since the above.

my 42nd huntress
stealth 11+8 spear 35+6 bow 32+10 beast 34+1
With the stats increasing gear I can keep my bow, spear, and beast all up a decent lv.
I can hear you people alread screamin "What about Stealth, and Why would you want the spear up so hi" Let me tell you.
A hi spear means you will consitanty due your max damage. Since you still have to kill mobs to get EXP you might wanna consider being a help to your group ( Sometimes a bow is impractical) and throw alittle damage around. Thats the short of it.
As for stealth, hey Hunters anit Shadowblades. You wanna be an expert at stealth and your a hunter your playing the wrong class. Stealth comes in handy, very usefull in pvp. Excessive stealth if awefull expensive. To me its not worth it. If I was a hard-core sniper, maybe that would be diffrent. Stealth is also baced on level, I can get around mobs in tight quaters (like in DF), it seems to work fine were it is.
My advice to newbie hunters is to watch out for misinformation, and play the kinda hunter you wanna play. When they allow repsecing I would expect alot of disappointed hunters to take the path less traveled.

First: always use spear with hunter because there in a hunter quests and do a lot more damge.

Second: OK what you want to have is

-Composite Bow at you level for the critcal hits.
-Beastcraft 2 levels below you but the MAX you ever want it is level 43.
-Spear at either 10 or 18 or 25 (i will talk about this a bit later)
-Stealth put all left over points from the 3 top skills in because STEALTH is only a PvP or RvR thing.

Spear: what you really want is the minimum of level 10. The reason for the is that at level 2 SPEAR you get a + damage attack and at level 10 you get on after that.
At level 18 you get a + damage that carries on from the level 10 spear so you can do, Level 2 then level 10 then level 18.
You get a better one after level 10 at level 25 so you can do, level 2 then level 10 then level 25 for a high damage hit.

Remember the lower your spear the higher your stealth.
level 10 spear = high stealth
level 18 spear = average stealth
level 25 spear = very low stealth

Have fun also if you need help on a race read my message called Kobold Vs Norseman on the Hunter Page before you come ont this one. :)

RE: how do you rate a hunter
# Mar 24 2002 at 11:17 AM Rating: Default
I would rate the hunter a 8 or 9 because they have a massively powerful range attack and also if anyone get to close they can take care of them.

how do u rate a hunter

does spear uses strenght for damage-determination?
or does it uses DEX and STR like thrust weapons do?

Damage increase?
# Nov 25 2001 at 9:43 PM Rating: Default
If I put enough points into spear just to get dazzling spear and no more. Will my damage still increase as I level, even if I train another line? I just won't be able to use all the other types of attacks. Let me know what you think.
RE: Damage increase?
# Jan 25 2002 at 8:49 PM Rating: Default
NOpe , your damage WILL decrease as you level up.

Skill in weapons change your minimum AND maximum damage range. The trick is that the table it's not flat. From raw memory here is how it goes ( need to be checked back in other forum to be more precise.

1 point= 25-100% weapon damage
1/3 skill = 50-125%
2/3 skill = 75-150%

Then EACH point aferward alter min and max damage up to a limit I cant remember at 100% skill. This table is probably not accurate in numbers , but you got the picture.
RE: Damage increase?
# Dec 05 2001 at 7:08 AM Rating: Default
From what i understand, just regular swinging, everyone (character stats being equal) does the same damage with a weapon as the maximum, and what training in a weapon does, is decrease the amount of variance in that damage amount.

Say a person with 1 in spear can do 25 up to 50 damage.

a person with 20 in spear at same level would have a higher minimum, like 40 to 50.

thing is, even tho this doesn't look like much of an improvement, over time the person who specced in spear will have done way more damage cause of the higher average.

if you're gonna use your spear at all i recommend at least getting it to 10. Lancer is uber.

# Nov 24 2001 at 10:41 PM Rating: Default
I'm assuming since we don't use shields, they mean use after evade.

RE: help me with this folks
# Dec 04 2001 at 7:54 AM Rating: Default
right after you evade, use it. must be done prior to your next attack
RE: help me with this folks
# Jan 13 2002 at 10:45 AM Rating: Default
It is 1 of the more difficult ones, have to use it before ur next attack after u evade AND before the enemy's next attack, if they get another attack in before u actually try to use it it doesn't work.
If u r fighting an enemy that can hit twice/round, like ants and quite a few others u can only use it if u evade the second attack.
We get Parry?
# Nov 17 2001 at 7:49 PM Rating: Default
Level 44 says use after Parry... Is this a typo or do we get that skill higher up?
defense penalty
# Nov 07 2001 at 2:45 PM Rating: Default
When the description says "medium penalty to defense for next round" does that mean MY defense will go down next round, or the MOB's defense?
RE: defense penalty
# Nov 08 2001 at 9:16 PM Rating: Decent
The penalty is for your defense the next round. So, be careful when and how you use that skill - if at all.

ahh phew, maybe i will put some points into spear then.. thanks for the answer.
# Oct 17 2001 at 6:14 AM Rating: Default
ok maybe i'm stupid, and a noob (aren't we all at this point) but don't you need a shield to block? and seeing as my spear is two handed exactly how am i suppose to hold a shield? i haven't even seen a shield i can use yet anyway.. so how exactly am i gonna use return thrust, which leads to extended reach?
RE: block?
# Oct 17 2001 at 12:53 PM Rating: Good
its must be a typo because its actually: use after evade
