My family has been gaming together for years now. It's great fun and is an easy topic of discussion for us. My wife and I started playing FFXI in 2005 and my son joined shortly after. My two daughters love to run around on lowbie jobs and just kill stuff ( I currently have one of them leveling a mule to 30 for me XD). Anyway, I don't want to completely derail the thread. I just wanted to say that gaming with the family is an awesome, and cheap pass-time. All of us are planning on playing GW2 when it comes out so we can all start together. Should be a blast!

Just wanted to update a little, this is the laptop I ended up getting from the contest.........
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Pentium%26%23174%3B+Processor+/+15.6%22+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Helios+Gray/1830082.p?id=1218296144574&skuId=1830082

Even with the Intel internal graphics it runs the game PERFECT on max setting with little to no lag, every once in a while in Jueno but mostly perfect.

Nice playing side by side with my son, now just to get him through all the damn quests and levels and get him to 90.

I'm sorry all them obsticles will be such an inconvenience for you, but I'd be PROUD to take my son to have the same trials and grievances that I had growing up in Vanadiel. We could go explore together, and I would help keep his parties alive. We could do missions and whatnot together because it's NOT all about racing to 90 and getting the best gear.

So you would force him to take 9-10 months maybe more to be able to get to the point in the game he can come and join you on adventures. You do know that most jobs pre +75, are still useless in ~75 content right. That is a quick way to have him get bored of the game in hurry. Parties do not exist anymore. No matter how much you want to pretend they do. The best advice is to get him to level 30 let him come leech a Cleave Party, get him to 50, burn his limit quests, get him to 90.

Then go back and do adventuring with him.

Leaving him to struggle through 1-75, not getting into ANY content on the way is not how I would go about it. You can keep dreaming that people actually still do stuff outside of abyssea, but one day you will wake up. It is not about rushing to 90 and getting gear. It is about rushing to 90 so you can actually participate WITH OTHER PEOPLE in a game that is built around associating with OTHER PEOPLE.

Once he gets to 90 they can both go back and experience missed content, like mission lines, and events together. But if you want to have his son disliking the game in a month by all means keep suggesting this silly idea that his son should have to grind most likely solo 1-75 so he can "experience" what we all did when FFXI was one giant slow *** time sink. Furthermore, you want Tech to protect his sons parties, why not just go all out and level him as quickly as possible, since that is essentially what PLing is about. A few Cleave burns and he will be able to experience the real game, not the grind.

Tech don't listen to this nutcase. Get your son up as quick as possible to a useful level (75+) so he can adventure with you. Unless I misunderstood when you said playing together. All he will miss is 75+ levels of boring grinding that will likely cause him to lose interest in the game. Especially in the current state of minimal exp groups, lack of interest in anything from 2003-2009.

Wow, just wow. I normally am nice to people, even people like you on the interent, but I wish I had access to post pictures that way I could replaces Rog's name on that "And Rog, you're a douche picture". What's it like waking up every day hating yourself, then trying to pass that on to everyone else so they can enjoy your misery?

And you are damn right i want to get my son burned up to 90 as fast as possible. Then he can actually be useful as we are wroking through the fun missions (not the time sink ones) and he can actually be a productive part of them. The only way I made it through all that leveling I had to do was because I had a friend sitting right next to me drinking beer and eatting oreos (I know, weird combo but it was my thing). I am not sure how peple like you think that getting though COP the old way is every near as fun and going into Abys with a lowman group and trying to take down a Zone boss, or getting to proc the atma you want, or working towards seals for upgrades. Sitting in a party and grinding for hours upon hours to get a few levels was not fun, at all.

If you can tell me how spending the next 6-9 months slowly grinding through levels will make my son a better Mnk than if he burns through over the next month and participates with me, then I will publicly apologize via the internet for you. I can show someone how to be a good <insert job here> in an afternoon.

Anyway...........

so.. what you're saying is... let new people work their own way to 75 so that they can be useful to folks in abyssea people, where THEN they will gain friendship and help that they need. No thanks. **** YOU

yep, that is exactly what I meant. Or maybe we could all just grind with them getting 8-10k xp an hour instead of our 150k an hour to make them feel like a useful member of society.

douche...........that felt good :)

Maybe our servers are different, but as someone who just came back to the game this weekend I have to say that what you're saying isn't true. On Slyph there's about 2000-3000 people online generally. I only just reactivated Saturday and went from 60-65 in just a couple of day from parties outside of Abyssea. I will agree there's definitely far less of them, but they're still there. If you're one of those people who always sits on their butt waiting for an invite you may need to do the work yourself and make a group. It's definitely doable.

I also disagree on the timeline of 9-10 months to be able to enjoy the game with his father. It depends how much time the the kid has to play, but he can easily reach higher levels after 2-4 months, especially with the help of his father who knows the game already and will presumably help him. 9-10 months sounds right for someone completely on their own. has a job or school or something where he doesn't play at all during weekdays.

Yea soloing does suck, so why offer advice that will have his son doing a lot of solo work to reach level cap. It just doesn't make any sense.

Tech I want to know what server you are on. I have just returned to FFXi after a very long time away and My old LS is no more and I have been moved from Alexander to Shiva. There is just no one on when I am and I have a DRK at 61 that I want higher. I want to play with others and make some new friends.

My character's name is Saronmon :)

The only issue I would have for allowing a 10 yr old to play with me would be the in game language.
(Plus the game can be difficult to learn if you've never played before.)

Everyone knows the the filters doesn't block everything and I am not very thrilled about em picking it up from the game.

I'd probably wait till they were 15 or so before allowing a kid to play an online game unless it was going to be pure static and no random partying.
