This is something that's been bugging me since my Lv50 days...

Why did they put the UNIQUE tag on Tomestone rings? That is so annoying. I'm trying to plan out my gearing path: I've got PLD and WHM on 60 and NIN is like 95% to Lv60 as well.

The original plan was to use PLD for Roulettes and gear it up first with Lore stones. Then, I would shift to WHM and gear it up also with Lore stones and then dump the Scripture on NIN.

But... because of those stupid rings, I'm going to have to blow some 700 scripture on two rings because they just had to make the rings Unique (at least as far as I could tell, I think I saw the Unique tag on the Lv60 rings).

I really don't understand why they should be unique to be honest, especially when you need two of them. They obviously intended that you should be able to buy a whole set of gear with Tomestones, otherwise they wouldn't sell the whole set minus weapon.

Why even make the gear Unique at all? Other than rings, you can't even wear two simultaneously anyways.

The Unique tag prevents you from accidentally buying the same piece twice.

I agree it's annoying on the rings. The usual workaround for that is to get an Alexander ring or to upgrade a ring and then buy the normal version a second time (so you end up with 1 normal and 1 upgraded ring). There's also the weekly quest to kill the mini-boss in Dun Scaith that awards a 270 ring. So that's a possibility too.

Hmm. I suppose I could go the upgraded route. I dun know if I'd ever get geared enough for Dun Scaith by the end of the expansion or not, but was hoping to avoid some of the problems I had with trying to get into HW content: having under-leveled stuff and the mobs seemed a bit strong because they seemed to have assumed everybody was going into Falcon's Nest with full 120, or at least 110 lol.

But ah well. We'll see. I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

It was a justified assumption. There were vendors in Ishgard selling full sets of i115 gear to fill in the holes.

I think Dun Scaith requires i245 or something like that? I know there are no more gear lockouts on Lost City or Alex Midas (though good luck queuing for that) so farming the gear without tomestones should be doable with some patience. You have plenty of time to reach the end of HW content. You have almost 2 months. It took me about 3 weeks after taking a long break from the game back when Gordias was current content.

My advice is to focus on one job for right now. Get that job geared up enough to at least get in to all the content, then branch out to your other jobs. You'll find it's a lot easier to gear up multiple jobs if you have access to everything.

Yeah, that was the plan, to gear up PLD first, then WHM, then use Scripture to do NIN on the side.

Does Dun Scaith require a certain MSQ progression, though? I just finished 3.0 last night, though reading the wiki, 44 quests ain't that long. Especially once I start getting some lore gear on my PLD, stuff should be starting to get quite a bit easier.

I tried to find this on wiki but couldn't... what is used for the upgrade item on the rings? I know Illuminati Gobdip is used for weapons, but it didn't say what's used for the rings. I can't remember where I saw those, and the wiki page is blank...

No, the entire Mhachi series is separate from the main scenario. As long as you've finished the 3.0 story up through the final boss fight, you're good to go. The unlock quest is "To Rule the Skies" but the series starts at "Sky Pirates" in The Pillars.

https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Sky_Pirates

I'd also like to point out that your gearing plan as presented is the reverse of what most people do. Scripture gear is i260, upgradable to 270. You generally want the highest ilvl gear on your main job. This will also help you unlock content faster.

Well, the point of gearing PLD in Lore, is Lore is much faster to gain than Scripture, and I need gear right now, because my roulettes oftentimes give me stuff like Vault, Library, etc which are a real pain without any decent gear.

Now, I could throw Lore on NIN and Scripture on WHM, I suppose.

But mainly, I want PLD geared in something that "doesn't suck" so I can do roulettes and not suck as a tank, lol.

Mainly my goal is simply to get geared good enough that I can breeze through the rest of HW's MSQ and maybe dip my toes into some of the raid stuff. Not looking for full clears of the latest raids. I just want PLD, NIN, and WHM at 230+ and that should be plenty.

If I've time to take it further, well, I might just do that. If not, though, I'm content with merely 230+ on those 3 jobs to get them SB-ready.

Your #1 priority should be unlocking expert roulette. Expert roulettes give you about 120 lore and 90 scripture daily. So if unlocking that means feeding lore to your PLD right now, then cool. But then sit on your scripture tomestones for now until you can spend them on PLD. Then when you have a reliable income of scripture, you can start to feed lore gear to your other jobs.

If you're looking for the most bang for your buck, then your gearing priorities should be:
Weapon >>> body = legs > head = hands > feet > accessories including waist

So if I were in your position, I'd be sitting on my scripture tomestones until I could buy a body piece for my main job. I'd be using lore to upgrade the other slots as it came in and using dungeon drops to fill holes. I'd be progressing the main story as quickly as I could to unlock higher dungeons and doing any roulettes that award tomestones every day.

Lyalis, feel free to hit up the FC to run you through the level 60 dungeons; you'll get a lore bonus to make getting that gear easier, as well as random armor drops from the dungeon that work as placeholder pieces until you can get lore/scripture gear. It will also help you get to the point where you can meet the ilvl requirements for the later dungeons.

*nodnods* I was thinking of doing this, yes.

Right now, I'm stuck on Antitower... it wants i-180 and I'm only 166.

But, I'm due for another Lore piece today, though I doubt it will push me up 14 avg, lol. And even if it did, I think I would like 1-2 more pieces before I try that, since I'm a tank.

What is killing my I-level are my rings... they are i90 because I can't hardly find any quests that reward rings, and the couple I did find, I used on DPS rings for NIN because I was using NIN to do the MSQ with, lol.

Probably should have saved a ring or two for my tank, but I was thinking that Asyz Lla should have given me a new set of gear, and I was planning on using *that* on my PLD... but alas, it didn't yield any gear at all, lol. They were doing consistent gear sets every 2 levels, then you get to 60 and... no gear. Kinda caught me off-guard.

But I think once I stick a ring or two on from somewhere, that I-level should jump up considerably, because going from 90 -> 230 should be quite a boost to the avg.

There's a vendor in Azys Lla that sells i150ish gear that should have some rings for you. They're absolute trash but they're good for some old fashioned ilevel scumming Smiley: wink

Also the i250ish crafted weapons are something you might look in to. On my server at least they don't tend to be all that expensive.

I have 255 PotD weapon already for PLD, and the 230 for WHM (and currently working on getting it to 255 too. It's one of my main Lore/Scripture farming methods lol). So I'm good on weapons! hehe.

Anyways, today I bought a Scripture Ring and Lore Boots, and now I have 185, but I think I'll wait for at least one more Lore piece before I try to take on the antitower (I don't really have much time today to be trying a new dungeon anyways, with work and such going on).

I use this to figure out my ilevel:
http://www.dorkygeek.com/ffxiv-ilevel-calculator/
If you use a 2 handed weapon, put the same number in main and sub.

... doesn't the game outright tell you your I-level, though?

Though I suppose you could use such a tool to calculate it before equipping something, if that's what you mean?

I was just assuming that it was a simple "add everything up and divide by 13" averaging system, though I was not 100% sure how the game treated two handed weapons (ignore sub and divide by 12 or assume sub is same as main and divide by 13).

Yeah you can use a tool like that to figure out how much of an ilevel change a particular piece would be worth. I've been using a little calculator by my computer to do it.

To answer your question though, the game calculates ilevel for two-handed weapons as occupying both the main and off-hand slots. So you want to add that number twice for two-handed weapons (basically anybody that isn't a PLD).

*nods* okay, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! wasn't sure which it was hehe.

But yeah, my schedule next couple days looks like a lot of PotD lol. After doing the Kinna upgrade on PLD, gonna need that for WHM now, and that means a 1-50 run or two and then some 51+ to get back up into the 70s-80s before I go doing that.

Probably get several hundred Tomestones in so doing, too, which that'll be helpful. I already have Body/Legs/Boots, so I'm plodding right along. Hope to make some nice progress this weekend, though I've a few chores to do... ah well. I got time.

Almost 2 months, lol.
