Supposedly AC5 has you in revolutionary era France stabbing faces,

I'm horribly afraid of the French Revolution game, because it was my primary focus for my history degree, and I'm pretty confident they're going to butcher the actual history. I don't care about them playing fast and loose with the events and such; that's the nature of the game.

Which is sad, because done well it would be amazing. So many great characters, plot twists, etc.

It would also be a chance for the vast majority of people to hear about the Vendee massacres.

There's still a lot of room for them to go which would be really cool:

A female protagonist (kind of surprised we haven't had one yet), an Asian setting in the past, a modern-day or slightly in the future (of real life) setting, a South American setting, etc.

**** ton of info on Destiny out today. Going to copy/paste from Reddit because I'm lazy.

A ton of info out today on Destiny, as the press embargo ended this morning. Going to copy/paste a post from Reddit since it has such good info:

Quote:
After much waiting, the press embargo for Destiny will be released at 10am PDT. I'll be posting links to all of the media coverage in this thread. Today is one of the biggest days of Destiny coverage that we've had in a very long time, perhaps ever. **According to one of the community managers, it is the first true introductions to the game.** If you're one of those people who has no idea what Destiny is, think it's just another Halo, think it's just Borderlands, then TODAY is a day you'll want to pay attention to.

Confirmed sources include IGN, Destructoid, Playstation Access (on YT), Polygon, Playstation Blog, Rooster Teeth (via "The Know" YT channel and possibly The Patch), Joystiq, and The Guardian (rim shot). I'm sure there will be some others as well, Kotaku and Gamespot come to mind.

Snagged a deal on Watch Dogs before it released so I installed that last night and started it. It's fun in the same usual open world crime game genre. If you liked stuff like GTA, Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs and Mafia II then it'd stand to reason that you'd like this. The "magic phone" hacking stuff is new and works well in the game; changing traffic signals or raising security bollards on the fly is amusing and so is listening in on phone calls or draining the ATM accounts of child molesters. Faux-Chicago feels appropriately "alive". Driving is about the same as in SRTT/SR4. The plot itself is nothing special and you won't build any attachments to the protagonist.

The city feel Chicago-ish but with some major geographical oddities (apparently at some point the South Side fell into a new river) and weird naming conventions I assume were partially for trademark reasons ("Magnificent Mile" becomes "Mad Mile", etc). Sears/Willis Tower is represented along with a something sorta like the Hancock building, Navy Pier is there and a few other buildings you'd recognize if you lived there. Major absences are the Art Institute, Museum Campus, Soldier Field and both baseball stadiums were consolidated into the generic "May Field". The general feel is there though and it's a lot better than Hitman: Absolution's depiction.

Anyway, anyone who bought it early has nothing to be ashamed of (it ain't no Aliens: Colonial Marines) and anyone who's waiting for a major sale isn't really missing out.

I (along with the rest of the internet, apparently) was really hoping that the game would be something more than just GTA with a magic hack phone, but oh well.

Eh, I don't know what Second Coming people thought it was going to be that people are feeling so let down. It's just a game.

The whole hacking thing, in my opinion, is significant enough to make the game unique within the genre. Being able to play with the environment gives you a bunch more options and the whole camera hacking thing lets you play stealthily without even moving if you want. I needed to access a server within a guarded building. I tried physically infiltrating it a few times (quietly) but then decided to stay out of the action on a balcony. I used my phone to hack a camera, from there jumped to a guard's cellphone, used his phone's camera to jump again and then from that camera was able to hack the controls for some security shutters and raise them. Jumped again and was able to see through the now unshuttered window to hack a phone lying on a table and have it make noise, attracting a guard. Jumped to his phone and waited for him to turn around and get line of sight to a terminal. Jumped into that, broke the security, took control of an upstairs camera and got line of sight to the server I needed and I was in.

Had I wanted to, I also could have just used my assault rifle to kill a bunch of dudes and walked up to the terminal directly. And I won't pretend that my above scenario was exciting to relate but it was pretty fun to do. Likewise, I've hacked the controls of a crane to drop crates on some guards, blew open valves to stun the guys next to it and blow up high voltage panels to predictable effect for the guy next to it. Or mix and match like when I used some cameras to locate my target on the third floor of a parking garage, grabbed a car, drove past the guards to get to my target, beat the crap out of him, ran up to the top floor and picked the largest vehicle I saw before plowing back down through all the dudes. Not as sophisticated but still fun.

Anyway, I'm not saying it's the best thing since sliced bread but it's a solid entry into the field. You could argue that SRTT is GTA with over-the-top humor, Sleeping Dogs is GTA with kung-fu and Just Cause 2 is GTA with a grappling hook but it's those "with..." modifiers that makes them worth playing.

Playing some more, I hit the single-multiplayer game last night. You can be playing your campaign and then get alerted that someone is trying to hack you. The game shows a circle on the map that the hacker is located in and you need to identify him (or her) before they finish their hack of your phone. The kicker is that the other hacker is a real player who is in your game. They have a normal civilian skin (as opposed to a goofy trench coat) so they're trying to look nonchalant or stay slouched down in a parked car or crouch behind some trash bins while you're racing about, scanning people and trying to locate them (the closer you are to fully hacked, the more the circle shrinks to help you locate them). Once you find them, they're alerted and take off running and you chase and gun them down. It's a fun diversion and largely voluntary -- you find NPCs from "Blume Corporation" and hacking one makes them put a hit on you which is the other person's entry into your game. Winning and losing moves a separate pool of "points" you can use for some extra perks that aren't necessary to the campaign game but probably entertaining like anti-vehicle ammunition.

I'm 3-1 for defending myself. The lost one was a little ironic and frustrating because I was JUST on top of the building in his hiding spot thinking "This would be a great place to hide for a hack". Then when the hack came from that basic location I was too unsure of how to get back up and didn't want to waste the time trying to get up there when he might have been on the ground. My best time, I got into an underground loading dock before the hacker even scanned me to start and hid behind some pallets, using a hacked camera to survey the area. He came down looking for me, I saw him first and -- bam -- shotgun to the chest.

There's other games too, mainly racing variants. Haven't tried them yet. My verdict is still the same (fun game but no reason to drop sixty bucks) but I thought the "intrusion" mini-game was worth mentioning.

Some bright bulbs discovered that there's PC graphic effects in the code for Watch Dogs but unavailable in the game. So of course there's now a mod to release them.
