I looked at it once. Then decided it looked insanely complicated and probably played some game where you just shoot stuff. Reading other people's reports was fun but starting myself looked about as inviting as asking Crusader Kings 2 if you can take its daughter out on a date.

There's a graphics version on Steam that's supposedly less intimidating (I think it's "Dwarfs?!" but that might be some other game) but no one gets Steam games to play them. That's crazy talk.

Dwarfs?! is fun enough. I rather like the tower defense mode.

is it essentially the same thing as dwarf fortress? I kind of wanted to try it but didn't want to ascii unless it was on a tablet or something. For some reason playing ascii games on a computer feels ridiculous.

DF is a lot like EVE for me: Something that sounds like a lot of fun and I enjoy reading people's stories, but I'm sure as hell not going to play it.

I'm not sure that they're exactly the same, but I believe they're similar. Never played the old Dwarf Fortress, but I've read about it and it sounds a lot like Dwarfs?!.

There is a rather steep learning curve. The great thing about DF is its depth, and yet its biggest problem is its depth.

The game is being developed by one man, with help from his brother. But my understanding is that the brother doesn't code. The game is single thread and ascii graphics but there are tilesets available to make the interface more understandable. I can't be bothered to figure out the vanilla interface.

There is a strong fan base that is very helpful, and a couple of good video tutorials. Captain Duck's is a great one to get into the game. The game is indecipherable unless you either bang your head against it for hours and hours, or watch a couple of video tutorials. Again, because of its depth.

The developer has been interviewed recently and was quoted as saying that he thinks he can have the game finished within twenty years. There's a list of things he wants to include, which are listed on the bay12 forum, and it is pretty ambitious. There is no "win" condition, all fortresses eventually wind up crashing and burning, it's just a question of how long can you stave it off and whether it kersplodes from the inside or outside. You can fall to a goblin seige, or a vampire dwarf can infiltrate your fortress (look for an old dwarf with very high experience in muy

I've been getting a little better at staying alive longer, and recently learned about clothing. I didn't realize the clothing decayed over time, and at some point the dwarfs would just take it off and leave it where it fell. Then, not having clothes to wear, they would get "bad thoughts" and eventually start tantruming, which would cause other dwarfs to tantrum, resulting in a tantrum spiral and dwarf on dwarf violence.

I don't know that one, there's another one also, Gnomoria. I don't know much about it other than it's supposed to be less hardcore.

Game I was thinking of was actually "A Game of Dwarves" which seems pretty universally panned although "Dwarfs?!" is apparently also a Dwarf Fortress clone-wannabe.
