Hey all,

Has anyone played Cities at all? Reason I'm pondering is they are offering on steam 20% off pre order. And since the relative fail of the new Sim City, I am really hungering for a good city sim. From everything i have seen from the developer it looks great. I have seen some negative things from posts like bugs and what not. So any input would be great over the next couple of days would be helpful.
Thanks!!!
Hope everyone enjoys the Superbowl

If it's anything like the previous titles they'll show up for dirt cheap on the bundle sites.

I don't have any real hands-on advice to offer on the game itself but I will say not to buy it for 20% off. You can have myself or someone else who owns Cities XL buy it and gift it to you for 50% off instead ($19.99) and send them Paypal gift to cover it. 50% is my usual minimum discount for pre-ordering a title I know I'll play immediately on launch.

Cities XL Platinum has only been bundles once that I know of (Humble Focus Bundle) but does show up for 75% off in the bundle stores as a separate title fairly often. But it's also a 2012 game.

The original Cities XL line was criticized for being a bit buggy and some poor design decisions. XXL supposedly runs on a whole new engine and maybe they fixed that stuff. I'd wait until the 4th and see if there's any pre-release reviews before buying. Pre-order discounts run until the 5th.

Reading around a bit, one of the biggest complaints about XL is that it's more "city builder" than "city sim". You plant the buildings you want and the city works with them but you don't have the same economy or neighborhoods going derelict or traffic flow or residential neighborhoods being too far from commercial districts aspects that you have from SimCity. If you're interested in a casual builder game, XXL might work (assuming they haven't changed from XL) but if you're more into the simulation aspect, maybe wait for Cities Skylines by Paradox due out in the next few months. Paradox is all about simulation games so you'll almost certainly get a solid title from the nuts and bolts mechanics aspect. Judging from the screenshots, XXL looks a little prettier but Paradox knows simulations (almost to an off-putting extent when you're told to watch five hours of YouTube tutorials before playing Crusader Kings II). All in what level you're looking for from the game.

Turns out I was thinking of Cities in Motion.

But I have both XL Platinum and XL 2012. Not 100% sure where they cam from...

very good thank you you all for the advice :) I will wait a little while and see what happens with the bundles....I wasnt sure what was with XXL and Skyline. I thought funny skyline was coming out a little bit after XXL, and both called cities but had different publishers. i am looking more for a sim like sim city, I will probably wait for skyline and see how the bundles pan out for XXL.

Thanks again Smiley: smile

Apparently the 50% discount for owners of XL is permanent (not just on pre-orders) so if the game somehow comes out healing the sick and raising the dead in its awesomeness, you can still finagle a 50% discount out of someone.

I sort of doubt that'll be the case but....

Man, waiting on Skylines was the right choice. According to the reviews, XXL is essentially Cities XL with multi-core support and little else. And supposedly still plays poorly.

If you're ever that curious, it sounds like you could wait for XL Platinum to hit a bundle or $5 sale and just buy that instead for the same experience.

Thanks Jophiel
I think skyline is slated for later this year. I seen a release date but cant remember off hand(I think Nov) Its all good, steam had sim city 2000 for free at some point a little bit ago, and i have been playing that a lot. Is it sad that i think that game is 10x better than the new sim city?

Cities: Skylines is releasing on the 10th. Supposedly they're already allowing Youtube footage and streaming from review copies today/tomorrow. Anyway, even if you're not immediately getting it you can sign up for their newsletter and get some free DLC for later. Have a Paradox account and click "Sign the Petition" for a free zen garden/koi pond/cherry trees DLC when the game launches.

GMG has it for 20% off with coupon code or Nuuvem has it for even cheaper if you don't mind dealing with Brazilians.

Ok, Cities Skylines is the game anyone who wanted a decent modern city sim needs to buy. Getting great reviews and, while I'm not the best judge of the modern scene (last one I seriously invested time in was SimCity 2000), I'm having a good deal of fun with this one. Plus, it's nicely priced -- even at full cost it's only $30 for a brand new game. At $22 from GMG in the VIP section, it's a no-brainer.

Just don't accidentally buy Cities XXL by mistake due to the name of the thread, because I've heard it's terribad.

Or do so and come back here to complain about it and I'll laugh at you.
