So I got into the Blade and Soul Beta (was forum=152)Follow

I am with Catwho on this one.

I already have a hard enough time taking myself seriously while playing video games. This just seems a bit too ridiculous for my tastes. Plus, I am pretty sure my wife would find the art style offensive.

That's kind of why XIV's CC is the most limited of any "modern" MMO that actually takes the characters themselves seriously. The whole reason for the cardboard booty is because they needed to free "room" to implement Male Miqote and Female Roegadyn. This was explained during the alpha when people noticed the stance change as well as "butt flatening", which is why in comparison to the other races and genders - Au'Ra has a more shapely booty - stance aside because it's all new data, rather than recycling data.

And quite honestly, I can flip through any american station, look at a good chunk of TV shows and movies and see far more oversexualization. Even on Netflix - one of the most popular series, Orange is the New Black...let's be real.

...Let's be real. I don't see people running off banging each other in the shower or random sex scenes in any of the MMOs I play, yet people don't seem to have a problem with OITNB sexcapades. Yeah it's prison life but..honestly lol, there's far worse in the media than some pretty pixels having skin showing in a video game. I guess that's why it doesn't bother me, because while I'm more considered bi than les, it doesn't bother me because it's a video game. I mean, wasn't there a whole "Oh Ruby is turning straight women les!" episode on the internet when, based on the episodes she was in, she was mostly naked...? The tats were nice but uhm....I thinnnnnnnnnk that's a bit more oversexualized than overzealous character creation haha.

So while they can do better designs on armor...it's funny how no one bats an eye when men run around with bulging muscles/tight pants and/or topless..especially media wise because that's equally doing the whole over sexualized thing :p

At worst I can see B&S's art style as a little goofy but offensive? Smiley: lol

They're just boobs, chill out people.

I really don't care what other people choose to play... I'm not personally offended by it. I just find it totally over the top and silly... very much pandering to the stereotypical male gamer demographic.

That's the point. It's a video game. You're not really supposed to take it seriously. You can't walk out your door and slay some mythical wyrm or stomp kick a hole in a zombie. It's hard for people to separate how much they want to retreat into fantasy vs how much realistic immersion they want from games. You can't really fault developers for allowing for both.

I'm not sure I'd agree that it's pandering either. Have you seen the character creation options? They are deep enough that this game could appeal to just about anyone. You're not limited to creating a character with bust and hips 5x bigger than their waist. If someone less refined than you wants to make something that he'd be ashamed to let his mother see him playing, well... 'murica Smiley: lol

Not exactly what I was getting at, but I do agree with the above, so I guess I agree anyway.

I never understood the "oversexualisation" argument from people that play XI or XIV, both of these games are heavily sexualised and filled with fan service.

Almost every MMO does this.

I was looking forward to trying blade and soul too, I'm guessing you have to pay to be in the alpha right now? If so is there a date when free access opens up?

XIV's "smexy" characters have normal human proportions and the NPCs generally wear attire suitable for their location. The dancers in Ul'dah wear skimpy clothes because they're dancers. The prostitutes in places like Limsa or Costa del Sol are a bit more modestly dressed; the ones in the Gold Bazaar are even wearing pants.

XIV's character design limits you to creating characters of a uniform body shape, with unfortunate flat butts and a bust slider that won't go above a certain size (and doesn't even work for Lalafells at all.)

XIV is sexualized. It's a mature game dealing with mature themes, and grown ups have nooky. Heavensward was about three children born out of wedlock, when you get down to it.

But it's not oversexualized. I can cover my cat girl up with inch thick plate armor if I want. Or I can wear practical, comfortable looking leggings and tunics that isn't skin tight and painted on. Or I can wear a skimpy plate metal bikini. It's a design decision that I respect and enjoy, because I have full control over my own modesty.

You don't realize that the NPCs are prostitutes until you get up close and hear them soliciting other NPCs for a good time. Or if you talk to them directly, they speak in euphenisms. ("So you wish to see me dance? Then first you must show me your coin.")

The outfits I've seen for Blade and Soul? Even the most "modest" outfits are too tight and revealing or have weird cutouts that don't make sense for the armor type. (See the XIV community's whining about female DRG AF's infamous belly window. SE crossed the line there and we aren't going to let them forget it.)

XIV is rated as an 18 game in Korea.
XIV has a huge erp community on many servers, pushed by the tone of the game itself.
The highly suggestive emotes, look at that miquote bend over emote.. armors and cosmetics push selling the game on sex.
Panty shots, short skirts erywhere.
Armors that don't need to show skin, show a ton of skin.

I don't have a problem with it but if you are going to be a prude and say B&S is an oversexualised game but XIV isn't then you are just being hypocrite.

Both games do it in spades, you are just ok with how this one does it.

At the end of the day you should just say you don't like the art style and not that B&S is oversexusalised, because you obviously have no problem with that in games.

ESRB rating warning about XIV:

Quote:
Some female characters are depicted from low camera angles, with lingering camera views of their buttocks (i.e., up-skirt shots).

As Cat said, there is sexualized and over sexualized. FFXIV isn't over sexualized unless you've been living under a rock for 30 years.

XIV's is very oversexualized just not to a severe degree (because they can barely get NORMAL stuff right lol.) I promise you if XIV's CC was as expansive as other MMOs, it would become far more obvious, but thanks to the limited nature of the CC, it doesn't get bad. HOWEVER....it's fairly obvious with some things in the game that it is. You just have to look for it, whereas in other games it's more in your face.

For example, I can look at some glamours for men that are typical of body builders or the fact they're topless - Yes they lack nipples, doesn't change that too counts as oversexualization, because the outfit is literally designed to have them topless. That's why it doesn't bother me personally, but why I never understood the the point of oversexaulization and it bothering people..you can't escape it lol. People like eyecandy..in a lot of cases of American film and media, it saves ****** movies.

Uh, in a society where men can legally walk around topless and women can't most places, saying:

doesn't make sense at all. Are the topless male outfits for the male gaze or female gaze? Probably the former. Women really don't care about your shirts, man nipples, or lack thereof.

Now, men's coliseum subligar is another thing entirely. Assless chaps? That's for the ladies.

These are a couple of the characters I've made. You can make some cool/simple looking ones without being crazy.

The first one has a giant boob window in the shirt (why?!...) , but I like the hat.

The second one is sort of cute.

Still not my thing, though.

Even if you're not into the general art style of the game, the character creation is a game in itself. I'm not even the type to tool around with it more than picking a race and basic things like hair color, height, ect.. I used to poke fun at people who spent more than 15 mins creating their avatar, but after playing with this one for about the same amount of time I can see people spending all day on it.

I still haven't spent any time checking into the mechanics of the game, but they absolutely nailed character creation. I'm forever cautious with MMOs these days, but this one really looks promising.

I honestly think the only reason you are putting this game down is because you see it as competition for XIV, consciously or unconsciously.

Ninja AF has a "boob window" for females you know?

FFXIV is at the point where it doesn't need to really worry about competition. It has its players. That's why I haven't cared enough to move this thread to the general gaming forum, which is really where it belongs.

But there's an acceptable lore reason for that - kunoichi uniforms were always popularized as kind of smexy. The AF has fishnets, too.

I'm putting the game down because I think the art and character design is ugly. It's an opinion that I know many here don't agree with. Again, pistachio ice cream. No accounting for taste. Frankly, I've usually found the Korean "cute" things to be less cute to me than their Japanese counterparts, too.

If the folks who are excited about it that are upset that I'm not also getting excited, they can post in a different forum surrounded by other excited people.
