Graphics Card Overhauls?Follow

So... Looks like I'm going to go pick-up a couple of 660Ti to replace my two GTX460s. The 460s will end up in the kid's machine, which will make him happy.

The old cards are about 2 years old. Other than cleaning the fans and blowing out any dust (I do that regularly so shouldn't be much), I was thinking about pulling the coolers off and re-pasting the GPUs. Any suggestions here or just leave them be?

And no the cards aren't failing and normally run around 37C idle, up around high 40s low 50s when gaming.

Personally those temps seem fine and I wouldn't do much more than blowing them out and making sure they're clean. If you really want to pull them apart and throw new thermal grease in there that's your prerogative, however I don't feel that's necessary.

Temps are fine, fans are rated for 5 years of use on average, and really only ever fail if they lose a blade. If you were replacing the stock fan with a more powerful one or a water cooling setup that would be one thing, but thermal paste doesn't degrade over time, os you are really slightly more likely to do more harm than good.

Thanks for the info. I'll stick with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Just wasn't sure if re-pasting GPUs was a common thing or not. The cards these days aren't like the ones of yester-year where it was just a finned block welded to the card. Was applying my PC maintenance mind-set to the cards.

Cool beans, the kid will be happy. The 2 GTX460's will be a good boost to his box from what he's got now.
