Question about RAMFollow

Upgrading my RAM to a bit more. I have 4x2GB atm, I want to upgrade to 16GB of RAM just to have it upgraded.

I was looking and found this RAM and found this G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)

Mainly this RAM will be used for gaming. I'm not real sure on how good G. Skill is, so any recommendations is fine with me. I would just like it to be good RAM for gaming. I have an AMD FX-8150, if the CPU matters.

Any help is appreciated.

Gskill is decent. I usually use Corsair instead, but no issues with Gskill in general. Just avoid OCZ like the plague. Also make sure your motherboard will take 16GB ram. almost all of them will, some of the lower end ones either won't, or may require a bios update.

Alrighty, thank you, Kaolian.

I normally use Kingston Hyper X, so was unsure about the G.Skill. I found some Corsair as well. I was just looking for a lower CAS latency, as I have heard those are better for AMD. To be honest, I really am not sure if that is true or not.

Corsair I found: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866

My motherboard, ASUS Crosshair V Formula (just incase it is needed) says it can take up to 32GB.

I found some RAM that is 2x8GB, but I was just wanting to fill up all 4 slots. The 32GB set of RAM I found was just expensive, and I doubt I will ever need that (for now anyways) much RAM for gaming.

Oh yeah, the asus higher end gaming motherboards will take whatever you can throw at it, so you'll be fine.

when talking ram speed and latency, basically smaller numbers are better, they will be faster, and generate less heat which will allow you to either clock them faster, or make them last longer with less likelyhood of faiulure. Here's a good explanation of what the numbers actually mean (witten in DDR2 era, but the concepts still apply:

Primary Latencies:

tRP - the number of clock cycles needed to terminate access an open row of memory, and open access to the next row. Stands for Row precharge time. In 2.5-3-3-7, this is the second 3.
tRAS - the miniumum number of clock cycles needed to access certain row of data in RAM between the data request and the precharge command. Known as Active to Precharge Delay In 2.5-3-3-7, this is the 7.

So therefore:.
2 cycles @ 200Mhz = 10ns
2 cycles @ 200Mhz = 10ns
2 cycles @ 200Mhz = 10ns
5 cycles @ 200Mhz = 25ns.

2.5 cycles @ 250Mhz = 10ns
3 cycles @ 250Mhz = 12ns
3 cycles @ 250Mhz = 12ns
7 cycles @ 250Mhz = 28ns.

So in terms of only the memory/ data access / latencies have gone up a bit. This is slightly slower..
Proportionally 2-2-2-5 @ 200Mhz translates to 2.5 - 2.5 - 2.5 - 6.25 @ 250Mhz. This would be the same..

2.5 cycles @ 250Mhz = 10ns
2.5 cycles @ 250Mhz = 10ns
2.5 cycles @ 250Mhz = 10ns
6.25 cycles @ 250Mhz = 25ns

I went ahead and got the Corsair Dominator. I think it will fit my needs. Seems like it anyways, had some nice reviews.
