Author Tom Clancy, whose novel, "The Hunt for Red October" propelled him to fame, fortune and status as a favorite storyteller of the American military, has died, according to sources with his publisher and family. He was 66.

The cause of death wasn't immediately available.

A Baltimore-born former insurance agent, Clancy was known for writing meticulous thrillers focusing on political intrigue and military tactics and technology. He published 28 books -- including a new novel yet to be released.

Several were made into Hollywood blockbusters, including "The Hunt for Red October," "Patriot Games," and "The Sum of All Fears."

Seventeen of his novels appeared on the New York Times best-sellers list, according to his website. Many of them reached the No. 1 spot.

The sometimes perilous business of spy thrillers

His writings also provided the inspiration for the "Rainbow Six," "Ghost Recon" and "Splinter Cell," video game series.

His writing gained him a loyal following within the armed forces in the United States and abroad, giving him inside access that frequently informed the plots of his books. But in a 2003 CNN interview, Clancy said he was always careful not to reveal classified information or sensitive details of how the elite troops he often wrote about operated.

"I'll never decide for commercial reasons to put something in that endangers our national security. You just can't do that," he said in a 2003 CNN interview. "There was one thing, I discussed with a friend of mine in the Royal Navy. I told him a story I knew, and he said, well, Tom, you may never repeat that, as long as you live. And I haven't."

His new novel, "Command Authority," is scheduled for December publication.

I own a bunch of Ghost Recon and Splinter Call games. Guess when I get around to playing them now, it'll be like a tribute. Or something.

Bummer. His stuff's not really my favorite genre, but I've read a few of his books as hand-me-downs from my father-in-law....and enjoyed them.

Now when the announcement comes that G.R.R. Martin has bit the dust, I'll be mightily pissed.

Only if he hasn't released those last two books yet.

Martin will pull a Jordan, just wait.

And as for Clancy... Notice how his cause of death wasn't revealed? I bet he was too close, and they had to silence him....

I used to read everything Tom Clancy would write, but I guess as I got older, I stopped being able to read his books as cool spy stories and they came across more and more as just military-industrial complex propaganda. Still, I have to credit him in some part for my avid love of reading to this day.

Tom Clancy's later stuff became way too complex for me to enjoy, but I enjoyed his classics.

Remember the old Harrison Ford movies where he played Jack Ryan? Good times.

More or less this. His earlier books were really good. I wouldn't call any of them "simplistic" in terms of plot, but he did a great job weaving different groups of characters, all doing different things from different angles, into a larger story that worked. They were enjoyable because, as the reader, you got to see the story from multiple sides as it developed. The fun of reading them was wondering how/when one group of characters would interact with another and how it would impact the story.

His later stories seemed to spend too much time on details, which while interesting, seemed to serve more to show how much he knew about operational or technological aspects of the business than to move a story forward. I honestly lost interest and I think the last book I really enjoyed by him was Debt of Honor. After that, he seemed to get too mired in details and didn't spend as much time developing good stories. Even when his early stories were implausible or strayed off into speculation land, at least they worked. Just seemed like his later plots really didn't.

And of course, he did a whole set of books that literally was just him talking about various tech and tactics used by the military. So there's that. Still. I did enjoy many of his books, and it's sad to see him go. Especially at such a young age.

Another author that won't be making new things for me to read. Though his latter farmed out stuff wasn't as much fun.

In Rainbow Six Vegas 2 there is a level where you fight through a fitness center, my name is on all of the exercise equipment. A couple of other guys that I knew in FFXI also got their names into the game as wall decals, signs, etc.

One in the guys in my old FFXI linkshell said he was a texture artist for Ubisoft. We demanded proof, we got it.
