They weren't Protestant, same with the Italians. Can't be part of WASP culture without the P.

Something about JFK being Catholic being a big deal, etc.

Beaten to it twice while typing...

On a forum that barely has a pulse...

Luck loves me today. Smiley: glare

I'm out of town working, but my home town got battered in the storms last night that hit Michigan.

Power went out at my house at about 6pm Tuesday, and the power company says not to expect it back on until 11:30pm Friday. Good thing I'm not there. And had family that could empty out the fridge / freezer.

Doesn't look like anything damaged my house though. I do a pretty good job of keeping the trees cleared and pruned. Cutting down the weak ones big enough to hit my house.

Actually trimmed a large cherry tree one year, only to have half of it come crashing down parallel to my house about 5 feet away one night a couple months later. Was sitting in my room watching TV one night and heard a crash and my house shake. Stepped outside with a flashlight to see a tangle of branches and a large tree laying parallel to the side of my house. Would have sucked to have that crash through the roof... turned out the whole inside of the trunk was rotted out, not just the forked part in the trunk I cut off.

I knew the religion part. I just kind of thought there'd be, you know, more to it I guess? A lot of what Mexico gets blamed for is how a lot of Italians came to this country.

I understand the importance of nature, but I don't understand why people want to live close enough to it where it can just reach out and kill them.

I wonder what the chances of being crushed by a tree in your house vs the chances of an irate neighbor shooting you for blowing yard waste on their driveway is. Smiley: grin

(I like not having neighbors, personally. I'll take the tree.)

I don't know if it's really deeper than "Here comes the Other; let's flip out about how we're different" and religion being an easy target. Irish, Italian and Eastern European immigrants all had the Catholic thing going on and all suffered discrimination for it. Out of the other major Catholic nations, France never had major immigration to the actual United States, nor did Spain (since they had all points south to pick from).

But I don't think it went much deeper than "Here comes some guys speaking another language and eating different food to take our jobs and fuck it all up" followed up with "Here comes some even more different guys; guess those last guys weren't so bad after all"

I mean, you have to put things into context. This was a step up from the middle ages, declaring war some country ruled by your second cousin because they looked at you funny at the birthday party, or whatever. A few thousand deaths later they apologize and you call the whole thing off as they we're just trying to hold back sneeze, so all is well that ends well.

We're making progress as a society. Smiley: thumbsup

I'm in the same boat - my mother doesn't understand the distinction between living in the woods, and living amongst the trees. I have to remove saplings from the base of the house on the sly before they start crumbling the foundation. And I also need to get the pole saw out and cut down some branches before they reach into the bedroom window.

Speaking of: Rapid City borders/is half surrounded by National Forest. So, we get dumbasses move to/build next to or in said forest and then complain that *GASP*! wild animals are running around. So, yeah; your Pomeranian will be devoured by a mountain lion because you are an moran. And I will laugh.

Most animals we get here are deer. Lots of rabbits this year though. I guess they go in cycles, and this year is a big one for them. I usually don't see many but there are half a dozen living around my house and driveway this year.

Supposedly the bear population is increasing a lot in Northern Michigan. But I haven't seen any. Everyone and their uncle claims to have though.

And wolf spiders. Lots and lots of wolf spiders.

Sounds like you need to mow your lawn.

I think I either have a new pet cat that I've never seen or interacted with or ISIS is getting desperate and sending Jihad Squirrels to my front door. There's been like three eviscerated scoiattolo sitting on my welcome mat this month.

Ya, when I first saw the news articles I was surprised. 106 years old... no parent really wants to outlive their kids, but at that age you are going to be outliving your grandkids.

How was everyone's Labor Day? I lost money to the ponies. Not gambling, we went to the zoo and I gave my daughter five and told her to feed the horsies and she interpreted as shove the bill down the tiny horse's throat and not buy some feed.

Are they done Weekend and Bernie's'ing McCain and Franklin?

I watched a video of a bishop fondling some Grande-titty. (Video appears much more inappropriate than the still images in articles do). And the Clinton with a real penis dreaming of some Nafta.

But really just worked. Cause what's Labor Day? Just another work day apparently.

We had storms here when it wasn't 95 degrees out so I stayed inside and generally hung around. Exciting stuff!

Too hot and humid to be outside. I realized that I never got around finishing FFXV, so I played that a bit.

We did something similar with fish at the hatchery. However we were able to successfully purchase the fish food, and the kids had a good time throwing it to at the fish. Given the number of quarters in the water though it seems your daughter isn't the only one who's looking to cut out the middleman.

Other than that we tried to find a balance between frantic cleaning and doing nothing. As the kids start school on Thursday, and I go back on Friday, so time for housework and rest are slated to be in short supply in the coming months.

I did what every good red-blooded American does on Labor Day: go to the beach and get sunburned.

Once again I had to cover the 11p-7a shift because reasons. I've been up for...23 hours. On the plus side I'm working on my Alcohol Tolerance skill (299) at 9am because I'm a hopeless alcoholic.

Apropos of nothing, I was reading some really old threads and just found out today that Brownduck was married at some point. Aint history fun?

Does "aint" have an apostropy? I forget.Smiley: frown

EDIT: Because the frown smiley isn't "sad smiley".

I forget Brownducks name before it was Brownduck, but it was something else, because Brownduck died, right?
