Sure. And from a political theater point of view, pretty satisfying to have McCain come out of the hospital as a nominal savior on Monday, only to sink the vote on Thursday.

I know he did it because he's a thin-skinned grudge holder and he's still stewing about Donnie "Bone Spurs" Trump's "I like veterans who don't get captured" crack, but it was still satisfying.

Finally Portland does something right. Alt-Right and Antifa protestors were allowed to brawl with each other to settle their differences. Sounds like they self-policed pretty well: they beat themselves up, pepper-sprayed each other, and ultimately made sure there were enough pictures of the event that several of them could be arrested afterwards.

No word on who the winner was. Maybe they'll go another round though, as everyone seems to be up for it.

Popcorn guy probably made good money. Somewhere a former film salesmen wept as this would have been a glorious day for him 25 years prior.

I'm not sure if Yakety Sax or Guile's Theme best enhanced that brief video. Both make it great, just not sure which is better.

So some google guy writes this and gets fired.

I'm not entirely sure why he was fired (I mean the thing itself isn't really that offensive or anything, but YMMV there, we all have different triggers and such, and he comes off as rather ******* about some of the points), or what possessed him to write the damn thing in the first place (really gonna rock the boat if you don't have to?), but it seems to have started a bit of a ********** So hopefully everyone enjoys the drama while it lasts.

I like that one of his solutions to reduce the gender gap is to make leadership positions "less stressful." Though I do agree with the part about males being generally disposable.

Not really seeing the issue.

Ironically he was fired for making management positions more stressful, aka creating a hostile work environment. Smiley: rolleyes

Been reading through opinions of various female tech people today. Opinions vary of course, but consensus seemed to linger around the idea that google does a good job at encouraging women in tech, and recruiting them to work initially, but also does a very poor job of retaining women, both because of workplace sexism and a terrible work culture in general. It's been an interesting read at least.

Tech can be a pretty crappy place for women. The pervasive attitude of a lot of men who are drawn to IT and programming is that it's "their" field.

Not everyone is like that. I've been pretty lucky, for example; but I hear about it a lot from other women.

And I suppose it's been the same in other fields as well; medicine, for example, didn't exactly welcome the idea of women being doctors for centuries. Attitudes change over time. This is just another battle.

It's kind of odd to dismiss the people who made the decision to fire him as having been "triggered", though. They were probably men, after all.

That's totally on me, sloppy wording. Smiley: blush Probably shouldn't go writing any manifestos at this rate. Smiley: rolleyes

Do struggle to see how he could have presented the viewpoint much better though, which is why I wonder why he even bothered in the first place if this is the reaction it got (despite the fact this was initially posted on a closed forum designated specifically for controversial viewpoints before it was leaked to a wider audience).

Just for fun, took the time to read some of the scientific papers he cited, and he seems to be guilty of over-interpreting data, IMO. One of those things where you take a study, and apply the results in a different context and make an assumption about how it'd play out. Even if the assumption seems to be common sense, that can be deceiving, and there's no specific evidence for what you're arguing (in this case for example, citing the study about men being drawn to pursue power, and using that as justification for an under-representation of women in tech). Given the degree to which that happens in science (i.e. everyone basically trying to pretend their data is more awesome than it really is because that can lead to more funding), I'd argue he's more guilty of over-interpreting data to fit his own political beliefs than anything actively malicious, but I'm not his employer either. Internal politics are a *****.

I have enough respect for SPG to give him the benefit of the doubt but, generally speaking, "triggered" is one of those "I can safely ignore you now" words. It's the 2017 version of "Looks like I touched a nerve!!!" which went out of style back around 2006 or so.

I think if I shared a memo criticizing my current employer and bringing bad publicity to them in violation of company policy, I would be expect to be fired regardless of the content.

Where's the usual crowd letting me know how business are people and should be free to do whatever, right to work, and yadda yadda? With this, oil companies finally admitting climate change might be a problem, and companies pulling out of states that enact rights violations, the right sure does seem to have done a 180 on how they feel about the free market.

Ignore people that are described as triggered or people that use it to describe other people? For me it's become one of those words that causes me to gloss over entire sentences.

I blame all the kiddies on reddit, they're a bad influence. Have seen it used casually (i.e. more along the lines of 'something caused something else to happen') enough that it seems to have worked it's way into my vocabulary.

That just means I'm hip right? Smiley: cool

People using it to describe other people. Using it sincerely, anyway -- I can make allowances for ironic usage.

How about people that refer to themselves as triggered? Kind of a worst of both worlds scenario with them, if I ask me.

I'm triggered by triggers.

As an interesting side note to the controversy, looks like there may be a class-action lawsuit in the works against google for gender discrimination. Should keep things interesting.

I make more than many people considered to be my "superior". It's just the nature of management vs technical skills and pay scales.

Skroob you. I make less than people I've got more experience and technical skills than. They're called "officers."
