You ever watch one of those "found footage" movies and think, "This would be so much better if it was a normal format movie"?

I just started seeing the trailers for Project Almanac this week. It's got me interested. But at the same time I think of Chronicle or Cloverfield. I enjoyed the movies, but thought the "found footage" format detracted from them. I haven't looked up Project Almanac but the trailers made it look like a "found footage" type movie.

Every single time.

I agree in regards of Chronicle but I think Cloverfield greatly benefited from the "first person" angle. The shots when they are just between the monsters toes and tanks, jeeps and whatnot are nuking the hell out of it are incredible.

To be fair, Cloverfield stretched the medium a bit. There were shots in there that no sane person would have been taking (or would be highly unlikely to have been framed so well given the events going on at the time). It was well done, but I still had that "why bother" feeling. If they'd not even tried to make it into a found film thing, they could have really done a great job visually. Instead they pushed it to the point where it wasn't really believable as found film, but still wasn't as good as it would have been if they'd just filmed it normally.

For me personally, I'd much rather just deal with the suspension of disbelief to allow for the imaginary camera that's showing me what's happening, from many angles, with good framing and editing, than deal with the pinhole view of events that you get with the whole found film format. I just don't see enough value in it. YMMV of course.

My favorite part of Cloverfield was when the Statue of Liberty's head is sliding along the street and instead of running in terror, shock, or even disbelief the New Yorkers all take out their phones and record it. It's like "F*** you, unseen horror. I'm gettin' hits on Youtube."

I'm pretty indifferent towards these types of movies. If they're interesting, they're interesting. If not, they're not. Just like any other type of movie. The worst thing about them, though, are when they spawn sequels. Normal sequels tend to be crap shots by themselves, but found footage sequels somehow manage to be worse. Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity are the ones that come to mind immediately.

I love found footage (POV) movie...

Paranormal Activity is oddly one of my favorite "series".

As of above, so Below is the last one I watched. Was not the story I thought it was.

POV has it's places. Movies, games, pron (this world is filtered if I swap 2 letters? You silly ******* kids).

As to Project Almanac, looks like a mix up of Project X meets Butterfly Effect. Looks like it is part POV and part normal.
