Um... How about "gay rights issue raised completely out of the blue, and lumped into a list of reasons why the president bowed out of a high level meeting with Putin". Seriously. Snowden thing explodes. Obama gives a statement and more or less says "we're not going to G8 unless Russia hands us Snowden". Russia calls Obama's bluff. Then suddenly it's "we're not going to G8 because Russia is mean to gays".
It was an absolutely transparent change of subject when it was made. What's bizarre is how some people have continue to carry this torch (haha!) despite it being completely silly and ridiculous. I mean, I get that some might think there's some wedge issue value in pushing it into the public discourse, but that kinda backfires when you have long lists of gay athletes saying "this is really stupid".
So how about we just acknowledge that folks in the US really don't actually care that much or have much influence on how Russia treats its homosexuals, and also that in the grand scheme of "things that other nations do that we don't like", it's so amazingly far down our list as to be more or less pointless to even bring up. We managed to attend the Olympics in China despite that country having a bad record on more or less every single thing we care about (human rights, environment, Tibet, gays, patent infringement, etc, etc, etc...). So really? It's a non-issue.
