We have AoE Snares (65% movement, plus DD) but the actual Root line is single-target only.
Yeah....

I was a fire/earth spec wizard in beta(EU guy here ;) ), and i believe now i unknowingly gimped myself by splitting spec. It was ok, i had 2 bolts and some good DD and from time to time i had that AE. I only got it to level 15 before i really gave up on it.

In Retail i started with an armsmen and later decided to make a caster, but because of RvR advice i decided to become an ice spec caster. There have been changes implemented recently that altered the effectiveness of Ice spec in RvR, mainly dealing with keep defense(a definite strong point prior). The keep doors became targettable for AE nukes so that if i go PBAE nuke behind the door their casters can AE nuke me back from a range. While true, a high level PBAE will hurt lots of attackers once/twice until they get you, a Fire AE has a good range so you can stay back, get a target(stand near the door if you can handle a hit or two, far off, with target clear, and the first AE attacker will get selected), and nuke like they do(btw, you should be able to cast through the doors, my armsmen could attack through them).

The other thing i found lacking in ice was resists. While yes you have a resist debuff its more of a chain cast-type spell. The more you cast the more damage you should do until the target dies. However, a good deal of the creatures i fought had ice resistances and also my spells were prone to being resisted when fighting anything yellow+. I did have maxed ice spec, and it didnt help. The PBAE does *massive* damage, but invariably you get resists on it too. In a mithra group we accidentally got aggroed by 4 oranges/reds in a group of 4. I went mad PBAE nuking and cast about 4 times before i died, usually hitting for ~200 damage (total) each time. Its really a suicide cast. Another group of guildies accidentally pulled about 15 filidh and sacrificers in Salisbury when we meant to get two. There were 2 fire spec and one ice(me), while they were AEing from distance i had to wait until the mobs got close, and used PBAE twice before some new arrivals got tapped by it and came after me.

As i seem to be finding fault with ice and fire is recieving more bolts in subsequent patches, i will be rerolling my wizard soon. Please dont take this as an anti-ice attack, see the very excellent post ^^^^ up there that suggests what will be best for your type of person ;)

Hi guys !
Does anyone know what are the characteristics of new lines of spells (Liquifaction and Calefaction) ? I can't find anything about them (DD, range, incantation...). Do you have a good link for that ?

Finally somebody who doesnt whine about his character being gimped or laugh about the other choices. I'm fire wizzy all the way. I have another buddy thats playing an Ice one and together, WE RULE. only the two of us and we take on pygs at lvl 40. fire wizzy casts a fire bolt, waits for them to draw nearer and starts AoEing when the three come in range, once they reach ice range, the second wizzie rapes them. We always have our blade turn on and rarely need to recast it... they simply dont make it thru. So please, instead of thinking only one type of wizard is strong, try seeing how others work.
Thanks again

Question on debuff ice resistance spell
# Mar 19 2002 at 4:36 AM Rating: Default
Hello all,

I am following the discussion here with a lot of interest, but i can't find the answer to this question:

In the liquifaction spell, there is a spell that does some damage and debuff ice resitance.
Does this spell really work or is broken like the debuff darkness from runemaster? And the debuff really allowed other ice spells to do more damage?

RE: Question on debuff ice resistance spell
# Sep 08 2002 at 2:00 PM Rating: Decent
It really works.

I don't believe the debuff breaks.

I cast it first off, then nuke from there. I recently learned that the debuffs stack, so an Ice Wiz can cast it over and over, reducing the targets resistance further each time.

the PB ae is just like the elds can hurt keep doors and thru them and can hit stealth targets!!!!!!! u have a snare to hit enemys more than fire so easy lvls and last of all you have a ice resistance debuff/DD which is esential since other realms seem to have lots of resistance against them!!!!!! just keep this in mind

HoHoHo.

One of the advantages to being a scolarly Wizard type, is that we tend to be fairly well educated. We know how to read, can spell fairly well and know at least the basics of punctuation.

IceBoi, on the other hand, is clearly an uneducated Young Cutpurse from the Hills of Camelot, who likely watched in dismay as his entire camp was wiped out by an Ice Wizard's devastating Point Blank AoE.

You have our sympathy, IceBoi. I hope you are able to pick enough pockets to afford some therapy.
what fires for in rvr
# Feb 24 2002 at 3:50 AM Rating: Default
if you look at the fire skill i'ts a rvr and pve
bolts do almost little damg compared to other spells pve. but the intas take less time to cast and use LESS mana. beside you ever notice that when you cast a bolt that it can MISS it's target completly! so thats what 255 damg out the tubes.

This is because there's an overly large gap between DD's from lvl22 onwards
so it couldn't hurt to upgrade your equipment. Maybe your hunting the
wrong type of mob or don't know how to ice grip ether case if soloing look
for trees or furry animals that are extra weak Vs fire.
ice the way to go
# Feb 17 2002 at 1:42 PM Rating: Default
here's my take, a lvl 50 icemage nuked with the areanuke for 578 dmg on my level 46 berserker... it is powerful, definately the way to go.. if you wanna do the fire type nukes just go to midgard and be a runie(you can get fend and bolts and a 50% speed buff) ... btw if any high level ice mage checks this.. do wizards get a fend type spell(aka nullify first melee hit?) alot of my budies on midguard keep thinking they do but i'm not sure cuz they miss a hell of a lot against them.
Ice vs Fire
# Jan 29 2002 at 5:52 AM Rating: Default
Getting alot of questions in game about fire vs ice.

so here it is argue if you wish.

Ice for PvE and quick lvling.

Fire for RvR

Ice AE has no place in RvR I never use it. I have killed maybe 5 people with it. Insta con debuffs, insta mezz, insta stun, insta this, insta that, insta death mostly, usually gets you before your AE goes off.

Fire AE at least you can defend a keep half way decent.

well anyway thats my point of view. I have about 50hrs into RvR and about 24 days into DAoC.

I shelved my wizard btw for a smite cleric they nuke harder where chain and can rezz.
RE: Ice vs Fire
# Apr 10 2002 at 3:00 PM Rating: Default
Smite clerics suck. I can't believe you dropped your wiz for a smite cleric. Good luck. Wizzies get better nukes, and a better variety. But if you still wanna make a smiter cleric, be my guest. Just don't try to get into my group.
Fire for RvR
# Jan 19 2002 at 10:12 PM Rating: Default
Fire AE is the way to go for RvR. I am 100% ice and until they fix the doors in keeps so you can't attack or target through them Ice wizards will have little to do.
RE: Fire for RvR
# Mar 11 2002 at 10:57 PM Rating: Default
I was a fire wizzy until nowadays most rvr is keep wars and chaos which ice aoes are necessary for albion. This is the case especially on my server (merlin) were everyone is thinkin of ways to kill mids cause they got every relic and a whole bunch of people play them on that server. Ice aoes are non target so u stand near door and start castin they will go through and in the midst of chaos ive seen 15 people dropped by a little lurikeen eldritch against the mids spammin the aoe.
PS: Think of this bullsh*t on my server...Runemasters in mid on this server like a guy named Dakkon (he has around 1.2 million rps atm) are hittin TANKS for 900 damage. BULLSH*T.
RE: Fire for RvR
# Feb 19 2002 at 10:52 AM Rating: Default
You just don't know what the hell you are talking about. You probably never play ice wizard and just make some dumb comment. Ice wizard is best at keep defend. I have to say best. The damage is so huge that would kill all the tanks that bang on the door in a few blasts. This also apply to Hibernian enchanter as well. Basically, any classes that have high damage PBAE is deathly when they defend the keep and behind the door.
Mistake: "AE"
# Jan 25 2002 at 12:51 AM Rating: Default
Misread, you said AE. Sorry =P duh!

Ice is essential for RvR, high dmg + snares

If anything gets close to an ice wizzy he can quickast the area effect an kill his atacker.

As for range, go for path of earth bolts at lvl 40 when you have double spec points to spend. It has 12 second delay in the stead of the 22 second delay that fire has and does more dmg.
FIRE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
# Jan 25 2002 at 12:46 AM Rating: Default
The fire bolt is NOT the way to go for RvR.

Fire bolt:

22 second delay
Lower dmg than earth bolts

Earth bolt:

12 second delay
Higher dmg than fire bolts

Spec in ice so you get the snaring spells which have integrated dmg which let you kill stuff that cons purple to you and at lvl 40. Ice also has the highest dmg spell in game in the form of an AE.
When you have double spec points to spend (lvl 40), go into earth so you get the uber bolts (not to mention the damage shields).
fire vs. ice
# Jan 04 2002 at 10:06 AM Rating: Decent
I still get the feeling that a fire ae you can get off on something three times beats out an ice ae you'll get off once before they beat you into a pulp. I'm referring of course to the semi-documented fact that ice ae's are drawn from the caster and fire ae's are drawn from the target.

Would any high-level wizards care to comment on their effectiveness of ice vs. fire?
Searing line???
# Dec 29 2001 at 9:58 AM Rating: Default
OK, don't know what's wrong but the "Searing" line seems to ADD to ice buffing, even if it does resistance debuff. I tried to cast searing first before kiteing with "ensnaring" and it definetly makes ensnaring hit for LESS afterwards, not more. Even if monsters do ressist less it seems that the only use would be if you attack some purple guys and cast it first so they dont resist as much.
Please someone comment on this, what is really going on here?
RE: Searing line???
# Dec 31 2001 at 1:42 AM Rating: Default
known about this for a long time I am not sure whats going on because I don't understand the definition of the spell.

I do not use searing wind only snare and the AE, hope they fix the searing wind line soon
Specialized Path?
# Dec 23 2001 at 12:47 AM Rating: Default
In my spell skills tab, the path of fire is green. The others are... don't remember - but I know they're different. I have put most points into ICE, none in Earth and some in FIRE. The question is: Did I inadvertantly choose Fire as my main specialization - maybe because I chose it first? I don't remember where I put my first pts. I hope this makes sense to someone - I think I just confused myself...
spec points add dammage?
# Dec 17 2001 at 7:07 AM Rating: Default
Besides giving higher lvl spells what else do spec points actually do? Do they increase dammage reduce resistance or any of the like?
RE: spec points add dammage?
# Mar 14 2002 at 9:33 AM Rating: Default
Yes, the higher your skill in a spec line, the more dmg you will do with those spells, and the less amount of times you will be resisted. Getting +# Skill items is essiential at higher lvls when you want to start grouping for purples. If you don't have +# skill items, you will find them very hard to hit.

Are the ensnaring haze spells doing damage also? My Path of Ice is at level 5, and I just got my initial liquefaction spells, however the ensnaring haze descriptions in the game do not mention any direct damage - just the slow-down-of-mob ability.
To help confused wizzy, I hope
# Nov 22 2001 at 6:41 AM Rating: Default
Hail confused wizzy,
The instructions for us are not exactly clear but i think i have the hang of it now.
3 paths - ice,fire,earth
each level u get a new spell (nearly every level) no matter what your skill is, these base paths are linked to level.
Now the skills - When u specialize in a path you, increase spell vs resist of target and i beleive dmg.
When you reach a skill level of 5 in one or more of the paths, you get a special path - skill 5 in ice you get liquification.
Finally the special paths are the only ones, that are effected, int he way of spell availability, by skill points.
So to sum up 3 paths ice, fire, earth - spells received via level and the quality of those spells matched with skill.
The 3 special paths are matched directly with skill level.
Hope this makes sence after ya ears stop bleeding ;o)
nope
# Nov 22 2001 at 1:30 AM Rating: Default
If you want 50 in Ice at the end, then you can afford to get 2 others to 14, or one to 20 and leave one completely untouched.

for example:
Earth 14
Ice 50
Fire 14

Its a points based system, use them and lose them.

Alright, if i am right you get 1 spec point for each lvl right? so when i hit 30 i get 30 points to put into a spec spell. say im going all ice, i only need to put points in ice each time im going to get a spell right? the lvls im not going to get a spec spell in ice i can put my points into say earth or fire and still get all the ice spec spells right? if im wrong please make a note, i want to go all ice and get the 50th spell. thanks
RE: Roscoe
# Dec 06 2001 at 2:27 AM Rating: Default
you get 1 spec point each level, until Level 5, from level 6 on, you get 2 points per level.
6/12 7/14 816 etc.

IHEAR at the last 4 levels you get extra points to evenitout to whereyou canhave 2 skills at 50 each.

Ihaven't confirmed this yet.
RE: Roscoe
# Dec 06 2001 at 10:31 AM Rating: Default
You don't get 2x points if you are a wizzard. Only special classes like merc or infiltrators get 2x. You are a caster, you get 1x. NO more. Some classe get 1.5x, but I don't know what they are. They assign how many points you get by how many things you can put points into (slash, thrust, spells, stealth...ect).
Ice Spell Line
# Nov 19 2001 at 12:25 AM Rating: Default
Question:

I am new to the game and just reached level
5 in cold specialization (Liquification).
How come I received these following spells?
(Note: I reached level 9 and got to level 5 in Ice Specialization)
5 Ensnaring haze
6 Searing Wind (Minor)
9 Ensnaring Haze (Lesser)

According to the book, if I am at level 5 proficiency,
how come I got Ensnaring Haze (Lesser)?
Or, if I got it cuz I am level 9, then why didn't
I get Burst of Steam (minor)?
I think maybe the order has changed and the book
is wrong or maybe it is a typo?

Sincerely,
Confused Wizzie
