Lvl 5 Wizard
# Dec 03 2003 at 8:24 AM Rating: Good
I just made level 5. I do PvE and got off the game to see how I wanted to spec.

I think I understand that I should Spec either Fire or Ice or Earth.

As a PvE I am thinking about specing Fire (actually planning to) but I am reading how some people when they reach 40 are respeccing.

My question is why respec at all?

RE: Lvl 5 Wizard
# Feb 21 2004 at 5:58 AM Rating: Decent
Since no one else has answered this yet, I'll just give you the summary of why many fire wizards respec at 40.

Of the three paths (Fire, Ice, Earth), Fire is the best path by far to spec in if you want to level faster, and be able to solo with relative ease. Earth and Ice wizzies usually need groups to do what Fire wizzies can do solo. A smart nuking fire wizzie can kill without being touched, whereas Earth and Ice wizzies get bumped and bruised a lot. Because of these reasons, and because the pyrotechnical graphics of Fire and Pyro spells just look so cool, a great many wizzies spec in Fire. They can level faster, and don't have to rely on groups, and they look cool blasting things to fiery pieces :p They're independant beings.

But when it comes to RvR as you get to the higher levels, Fire wizzies don't have the more powerful AoE, PBAoE, and GTAoE spells that Ice and Earth do. That's why so many fire wizzies respec at 40 to Ice or Earth -- for the more potent keeptaking and RvR-advantage spells. They use Path of Fire to get them to level 40 faster, then switch to the better RvR and keeptaking paths.

I was going to respec my fire wizzie at 40 for that reason, too. But when I finally did reach lvl 40, I loved my fire wizzie so much that I just couldn't do it, lol. So I left her as Fire, and will raise another wizzie to Ice or Earth.

Wizard spec

Hello everyone. I think I posted the last one and no one responded. I am currently a lvl 32 fire wiz and I think at 40 im going to respec and go Earth. I have heard that earth speced is great for RvR and also not bad for grouping. The GTaoe and aoe root sound pretty cool and also everything else that earth spec has.
(ps) I hate Ice wizs because they take all the groups ;)
Good hunting to all...

Hi all, I am trying to decide if I should respec to something else or stay my current spec. I am a lvl 28 fire wiz and solo oranges/reds. I would really like the high lvl lava shield from earth spec, but am not sure if I should spec in it. It just doesn't sound very helpful when you here someone say, "need a earth wiz?". Im not sure what kind of wizard is most helpful for grouping and RvR. Could someone help me?
RE: respec
# Jun 25 2003 at 10:44 PM Rating: Decent
I have played the fire wizard like 4 times on different servers. If you want to get to 40 quickly without having to worry about finding a group then stay as fire. But what I found with RvR is that I had a hard time staying alive and didnt get many Realm points. I changed to earth on my last wizard when there was a server respec because of an update. For RvR is the the best, I AE root when they come running at me and when they are hiding in a fort I GTaoe them from the outside and hit alot of them. When the stealthers go in to kill them I get very nice realm points. The root and the GTaoe are the 2 pluses to earth for RvR. Yes fire has more power but sometimes power is not what is needed. Rooting 20 people that are charging you can help alot more, or hitting them over and over inside or outside a fort as well.
It is not as easy to get a group with a earth wizard unless it is full of fighters. But I find specing in Ice is the better 2nd line spec because it gives you PBaoe to help protect yourself from stealthers. It is hard to get a earth wizard to 50 but now after playing it for quite awhile I would do the same thing again. Play Fire till level 40 then respec to earth.

I started a wizard and being the noob that i am I put an extra point in earth and I want to spec in Fire. currently I have Earth 2, Ice 1, Fire 6, and I am on lvl6. I heard that there is a way to respec, a one time deal, can anyone tell me how to do this or if it is just rumor. CAuse I'll recreate now before I get to far along. Thnx in advance for the help. # Nov 01 2002 at 2:08 PM Rating: Decent
Don't worry about the extra point spent in earth, it won't hurt you. Continue spec'ing fully in Fire until level 35-40, then branch out. Up until that point, you'll be able to solo really well as a Fire Wiz, still getting your base Ice and Earth spells as you go along. Flambeau posted earlier on here the proper way to go about killing a mob while soloing, and I posted who the best to group with was.

ok, so I am now really confused after reading all the comments; but, would like to say this from my experience. I have a 50 level Hero in Hib; I do not fear any bolt spells and usually nobody is dumb enough to cast one at me as I carry a shield. Also, I have 2135 hps, your first bolt might hit me, but then I will use my Engage skill and block most of the rest; I hit equal level mages for around 400hps a hit; I cant stop an aoe and snare and mez are usually death. I am 50th level spec'd in spear and can bleed, stun and other nasty things; am gonna try a wizzy, but thought you might want to know that casting a bolt a char like mine means I am gonna chase you down and kill you easy if you cant snare or root me.
bad part oof fire aoes....

You guys ever read the comments typed here?

AE = AoE = Area (of) Effect, meaning every mob in a certain circle are hit (the center of the circle is the mob you casted the spell upon)
DD = Direct Damage, meaning you hit only one mob (yes, the one you targetted, just to avoid the question which one)

Those 2 abreviations are stated in the Onlie Help, but i bet most folks never took the 2 minutes it requires to read the help. As allways, RTFM (Read the f*ckin manual, again to avoid questions what this means)

Pyro and Fire are BOTH firebased... Pyro is the specialisation line of Fire, you can only train in Pyro, you can only train in specialisations. The base lines like ice, fire or earth are getting better as you level up (so a lvl 30 ice wizzy has : 30 in ice, 30 in fire, 30 in earth, 30 in Liq, 1 in Pyro and 1 in calefaction)
# May 16 2002 at 12:32 PM Rating: Default
Is a Pyro wizzy good? Whats your recomendation for a better wizzy? (Fire or Pyro?)

PS: What the f*** is AoE or AE or something like that? Oh... and DD?

Does anyone here know how you make the most powerfull wiz, i mean in which skills you shall put your points
# Apr 17 2002 at 5:57 PM Rating: Default
Some more toughts about bolts...

Fire wizzy : 2 bolts (base fire + Pyromancy)
Earth wizzy: 2 bolts (base fire + Calefaction)
Icy Wizzy : 1 bolt (base fire)

Fire wizzy : two very efficient bolts
Earth wizzy: one VERY efficient (calefaction)
the other LESS efficient (since the earth wizzy didnt spec in fire, the dmg output is in a larger range, so averagly his Fire based bolt will be only half as efficient as the one of a fire wizzy)
Icy Wizzy : same as for earth wizzy i.e. one less efficient...

You want bolts, go fire, and stay with it, to solo you are the best that way

But... its a game, have fun, you prefer ice? go Ice, stay with it and enjoy. As I red allready here its a fact indeed you CAN'T mix lines or you will ***** them both/all three up.

I tried a Earth and Fire wizzy, I prefer fire. If you fully spec in fire, all spells i use are from the fire line or from pyromancy, so all maxed (only root is from ice). If you spec in ice or earth, you cant depend on your line alone (to solo and use bolts at least not, ice might have better AE, who cares, AE is only good for RvR, in PvE it only makes mobs agro on you, not a prob at lower levels, but soon the mobs hit that hard you die in 3-4 hits if the tanks dont get them off you fast enough)

BTW my wizzies run naked, and have few INT items or so. If I have to melee, I'll try to live, but if I die, I deserved it.

More... If you solo, the hardest part is to find good mobs. Seek those you get bonusses for (positive numbers between brackets after the dmg) Seek a camp of mobs, position your butt at bolt range and start the duck shoot. For lvl 10-12 fire wizzies I advise the Fillidhs on the hill besides Mithram for example. You get there 2 levels in 2 hours if you just chain bolt.

If you group, hold fire till the tanks got 20-30 percent of it, to avoid the mobs to agro you. Dont chain nuke, wait 2-3 sec between casts, for the same reason (this applies to healers too)

Last thing... if you start a fight without 100% health and die, dont cry, you were a fool, wizzies are weak, dont push it, try to be smarter.
RE: Bolts
# Jun 10 2002 at 6:38 PM Rating: Default
My soloing at lvl 20 is like this. Blue, 2 bolts. Green, 1 bolt. Yellow, 2 bolts 1 nuke. Orange, 2 bolts root wait 20 sec 2 bolts. I am a lvl 20 fire Wiz, and I have been following this system since lvl 10. For grouping, nuke nuke nuke, occasionally root the add, never use AoE unless everything gets un-rooted and is going for healer (But you still die). If you group with 1-2 more fire wizards, goto a group of greens and start using AoE's. If you don't have any points in Earth, never use the Dmg shield. If you emergency root something, and your too close, the shield breaks the root, and you die. Always have your BT at lvl 19 on at all times.

Actually ice wizards get two AOEs. One is point-blank, the other is target-based. While the tb aoe isn't as powerful as the pb aoe...nor as powerful as the tb aoe of the fire spec line, it still allows ice wizards to be of a bitmore use in rvr and IMHO makes them the most well-rounded overall.

RE: Fire
# Mar 02 2002 at 2:32 PM Rating: Default
Yea I would stick with fire all the way. If you really want to try another spec line I would think about starting over now. I have spent all my spec points in fire and am doing fine. I'm sure earth and ice are decent as long as you spec in them totally as well.

Remember save all the armor you find and give it out, don't sell it for pittly copper. Newbies would get more use out of it =)

Fire = useless
# Jan 25 2002 at 12:37 AM Rating: Default
22 seconds to wait between bolts, low dmg bolts.
Earth has 12 seconds in between bolts, higher dmg than fire.

Fire AE is weak.
Ice AE is strong and though short range, gives highest dmg in game.

Fire can't compare to ice in RvR as most ice/liquification spells have an integrated snare effect which lets you kill lvl 50's at lvl 38 =)

RE: Fire = useless
# Mar 21 2002 at 10:03 AM Rating: Default
your silly, fire is the best because now it has 2 bolts and does the most damage in any other wizard spec, a DD AOE and 2 bolts makes fire wizards best

Yep fire aoe is better then ice cause if you move in with a bunch of tanks around trust me from experience they will go after you cause u easy kill.
RE: Fire = useless

Yes the fire AE is weaker (though I would not call it weak) but why on earth would I want to be close enough to a bunch of swordsman that want to hack me bits to cast a point blank AE? To be honest... I'd rather cast two non-point blank blank AE's before they get to me... And I believe that would be a total of 344 points of base damage vs the 300 in fire... hmmmmmmm... Fire wins again!

whoops... I meant 300 in Ice... not 300 in fire...

Fire is useful ranged AoE is hell'a powerful at higher lvls and
spammed over and over again(at range) leads to tons of Rp's.
DD means what?
# Jan 22 2002 at 12:25 PM Rating: Default
I look at these two spells:

Ensnaring Haze (Lesser) 37 DD, Enemy Snared: 65% movement

Combustion 31 DD

The wierd part is that I find that Combustion does more damage. Does anyione have an explanation for this?
RE: DD means what?
# Feb 19 2002 at 12:00 AM Rating: Default
You are doing more dam with combustion because if you are spec'd in fire as I believe you probably are, it improves your chances of doing max dam and beyond. Whereas using a path not spec'd in will often result in lower dam... Even lower than what the spell stated depending on what your attacking.
There are also new caster rules that were laid down about dam to creatures in relation to your level. For example - My wiz is fully spec'd in fire. When he was 11th, he had a DD at that time that stated that it does about 44 dam. However when I used it against creatures my level or lower, I ended up doing way more than that! Depending on the level of target, I might even do DOUBLE or close to TRIPLE that! Plus a chance of inflicting critical dam to boot! Of course, the reverse is true in that if the target is higher than you, then you will probably do less dam whether spec'd or not.
So general rule is target =or< you - more dam. target > you - less dam.
RE: DD means what?
# Jan 23 2002 at 7:00 AM Rating: Default
some creatures are weak for an attack, so just don't look at the DD. use the attack you like!
that's the best way! and you better train all abilities becaus some creatures are weak for ice others for fire.

fire vs ice
# Jan 04 2002 at 10:06 AM Rating: Decent
I still get the feeling that a fire ae you can get off on something three times beats out an ice ae you'll get off once before they beat you into a pulp. I'm referring of course to the semi-documented fact that ice ae's are drawn from the caster and fire ae's are drawn from the target.

Would any high-level wizards care to comment on their effectiveness of ice vs. fire?
RE: fire vs ice
# Jan 05 2002 at 4:45 AM Rating: Default
From a solo point of view, yes. but then i've never used AE solo. Ice AE does alot more damage then fire. Get a couple wizards together in a group, you'd amazed how fast things die. But fire AE of course has the advantage of being ranged and you don't need to be next to mob or enemies and is great for defending against a siege attack. =)

Fire vs. Earth
# Dec 13 2001 at 3:38 AM Rating: Default
Well if you want those 2 bolts you need to spec in fire, which i personally thinks isnt that clever. I mean, OK you get an awesome ekstra bolt, but think about what you lose....

If you spec in fire instead you will get 1 bolt (not as powerfull as earth bolt) 1 dd dmg spell and 1 ranged AE spell, thats 3 very usefull spells if you spec in fire. The earth bolt is good in exp, but as soon as you get out in pvp it is very limited. In pvp the DD spell and Ranged AE spell rule. Use the DD spell on single mobs, and the ranged when your army storms the enemy or the other way around. Trust me, you'll drop alot of players HP very fast.

If you spec in earth you will be able to be in the fight as long as the armys are standing infront of eachother, trying out the strength of the opponent with archers and mages firering bolts and arrows, but as soon as thats over and 1 army becomes aggressive you are useless, you can't hit a player when he's in melee and allmost everyone is in those situations, then you can use default fire or ice DD spell, but they dont do quite as much dmg as the fire DD spell.

So my advice to all wizards out there, dont spec in earth, but fire or ice

Ice rocks too got that AE spell at point blank, it rocks when 1 of the armies storm.

Now Here's a Trick for you guys
# Dec 07 2001 at 9:29 AM Rating: Good
Trick One - 5 hit attack
This is the best solo line up on spells I have workedout. Cast: Fire Bolt, Earth Bolt, (Root if not below 2/3 HP and back up for another wave of bolt attacks), then DD, DD, DD (quickcast). I havent met a yellow yest that survives. Make sure your time on the root does not expire, I have noticed that if the time expires and they break free on their own you cannot reroot them but if you break it by hittiing upside the head with a fire bolt you can reroot.

Second Trick - When the archer in your group runs out of arrows and want to spend the next 30 minutes running to town instead for more. Use you lowest level bolt spell, 2 I believe and pull monsters with it. It will do a whole 5 to 7 points damage so as you run behind a waiting wall of tanks and their first hit will pull the agro off of you. Then as per the normal just wait till hte monster drops to 3/4 its life total and begin nuking to your hearts content

Very good advice Flambeau, which is pretty much what I was about to say. Bolt, bolt, root, bolt, bolt, DD, DD, DD... I drop oj's on a regular basis.

Another thing I've learned by default only:
My boyfriend has a scout that is the same level as I am. I have a fully spec'd fire wizzie. I group with him and only with him. Know why? He'll target an oj or red, then will hit with first arrow for max damage + critical hit. Then, while he's letting his second arrow go, I'm casting my first bolt. For some reason, after that the mob is "in combat and your bolt missed", so I either freeze them or nuke until well done. His critical hit hits for most damage, so nine times out of ten I don't get aggro.

Works like a charm!

My name on Igraine is Kalush, so if any lower level wizzies want help, please let me know!
# Dec 04 2001 at 2:44 PM Rating: Default
The dude that said fire is the only way to get AE spells is wrong, ICE also offers an AE line which actually has a larger area of affect AND does quite abit more damage, but is centered around the caster not at a range, but its a good trade off imho. Also, you don't have to spec in earth and fire to get 3 attacks off, taht is funny, I am 100% speced in fire, and can squeeze off 3 easily, and even root the mob, run and hit it couple more times if need be. What I do, is I get to barely within range to cast the pyromancy non bolt spell. Then, I first cast the bolt spell, while it is in the air traveling to the mob, I spam cast the non bolt spell and it actually starts to cast before the bolt lands, just keep spam casting the non bolt spell and you can easily get off 3 spells.
RE: Wrong
# Dec 05 2001 at 7:00 AM Rating: Default
Not to mention quick casting. I do that also, cast bolt then 3 normal range fire attacks and if they're not dropped by the time they reach a quickcast always works when a mob is in melee with I hit it one more time. If it's a yellow or lower mob it's either long dead or extremely close to it so I just whack it once or twice with my staff.
RE: Wrong
# Dec 05 2001 at 7:23 PM Rating: Decent
Jigure is correct that this is a good tactic, however, be warned that quickcast does NOT always work in melee. I first made this unfortunate discovery at 18th level, so it may have to do with how hard the mob hits. The win pewrcentage is very high, though. If quickcast is interrupted, it's probably time to put on your track shoes and/or call for help.
